Has anybody ever used Doug Carters Stroke Trainer?
Any opinions on the product?

If you enter stroketrainer in the basic search feature of this board you will come up with about three pages of threads, some of which will discuss this specific piece of equipment, or offer various solutions to various specific stroke problems.

The stroketrainer will do what it claims it will do - develop a smooth stroke through slow repetition. I find that it helps me because I have a tendency to try to rush my stroke, particularly if I've missed a couple of easy shots. However, there are several other or better alternatives if this is not your problem:

Joe Tucker's Third Eye gizmo

If you can afford it, go to a good instructor such as Scott Lee or Randy G.

If you can't afford it, get a mirror to set up at the end of the table. You will find great instruction on stroke, including using the mirror in this set of clips.

If you can get a camera, take video from front, back and side. and see what gremlins are messing with you.

Until you can actually see yourself, you may never know what you are actually doing.:D

Recently I've begun to understand the importance of the stroke & I really try to focus on it.
One thing I do to practice this is long straight-in draw shots.

There are days when I "feel" my stroke is good and I have no problem pocketing balls at all.
Then there are other days when my stroke feels bad-- and that's the thing, I can feel it! But I can't seem to correct it!

I think I'm going to buy Doug Carter's Stroke Trainer. I like the whole muscle memory concept. Hell, Ralf Souquet uses it & he's got one of the best stroke in the business.

trainer

Hello I have over the past 15 years or so purchased 25 or more different cue sticks - shafts - every kind of tip - books and tapes - tried longer cues - shorter cues - playing w/glasses - no glasses - contacts

in short like most players I tried all sorts of things trying to improve my game in any increment - the single best investment i have made by far is Doug Carters stroke trainer - aside from practice and what Buck and Dexter tell me (sorry I'm sworn to secrecy on somethings)- nothing has even come close to actually making as much an impact -

I have friends in the poolroom I don't want to share this info with cause we play too close now and I know if they get 1 it will give em an edge

I feel real bad about that - but I am sharing with you

I like Doug Carter's StrokeTrainer, it gives me some peace of mind about my ability to perform a Straight Stroke, especialy when that need is for "all the marbles".

I also like Bert Kinister's Video, "the Mighty X", it's great practice for shooting straight.

If you can't make a straight-in shot, with all 3 points of reference, on the Shot-Line, how much more difficult is a cut shot?

save yourself acouple hundred dollars and go out to your local convenient store, purchase yourself a coke for around a dollar give or take a few cents. drink it down, place the empty bottle on the table, and stroke into the opening. not only will this accomplish the same thing, be more portable, and be so easy on your wallet you can buy a few for your friends, it will quinch your thirst too...

True dat.
Don't use an Evian water bottle. It'll make you develop a sissy stroke.
Use American made water bottles.

Why try to develop a complicated stroke that requires perfect timing when you can quickly learn a simple pendulum stroke? Before you start down the pump stroke path, you might want to do a search for threads on dropping the elbow. It might just save you a lot of grief.

Not a bad idea

I have used the stroke trainer for 4 years . 150 strokes per day. I actually turn the contraption around and stroke thru the ass end. I also use the 3rd eye trainer and think it also is a good thing. I still miss lots of shots but when I have to use a straight stroke with no english I feel good about it. I stil miss but my stroke is straight.

I still miss more than I want..............TommyT

I have used the ol' Coke Bottle for practicing my stroke, probably lots of players have done that. I've had a good stroke for 50 years, but I am still required to tune it up once in a while. When there are times that I cannot get out to play for 2-3 weeks, I practice with the StrokeTrainer, to retain my feel of shooting Pool.

The "shooting arm & it's parts" are not constrained on a PLANE, when using a Coke bottle, so that you are developing "muscle memory", for your shooting arm, doing that particular human motion.

That is precisely the reason & function of the StrokeTrainer, to constrain your shooting arm on a PLANE, while learning the feel & correct motion required for a true stroke.

You can save yourself some money & wander around in the wilderness or you can buy a map & learn to read it. There are "natural" athletes & there are developed ones, same goes for Pool.

Good Luck...
