i was working on my game last night...and i thought that maybe the reason i cant hit the center of the ball isnt about what i SEE but maybe how i stroke...

i hold the cue slighty with my hand cocked, i think when i come throught the core of the cue ball, there is some left english on the ball...

so i got down and tried to work it out....i was consciously holding the stick different.....and cocking my wrist the other way....

which HURT! was painful...and akward...but I Was hitting the ball RIGHT....

what can u guys tell me about this?

Stroke

Joe Tucker has a stroke trainer that fits on the end of your cue , or you can put 2 golf tees 1 on either side of the shaft and see if you knock them down.

I agree on Joe Tucker's third eye stroke trainer. It will help you find center ball. If you're putting backhand english on the ball, have an instructor check your stance or how you approach the table.

Start taking notes..............

You should really take notes on this in a play analysis journal or something..you are on the right track of figuring out whats wrong. Dissect everything from your line up to your grip etc....When I was going through a problem I thought it was my stroke that was wrong but in fact it was how I was lining up. So don't JUST think its necessarily that one thing that is the problem. All I can say is dissect everything you do..with your regular way of shooting and compare it to the awkard way that you tried and see what the differences are..hopefully you'll start to see what the little differences are that make you accurate one way and not on the other..that way you can learn to adjust playing the comfortable so that you dont have to shoot awkard and in your case painfully.

IMO your hand on the butt is either moving out from body or in. I helped a guy the other day by telling him to sort of lightly squeeze his armpit and that stabilized his stroke. Helps control elbow.

well, now what about stance....

i shot the same way again last night, i really think this is the thing im looking for , and as far as the golf tee thing i tried it with just 2 cubes of chalk...but it worked.....and yes the pain was still there, i realize now that my arm wasnt quite online, but now it is, if it feels comfortable, im not online, if it is a little painful.....bam....im sure in a few weeks it will feel comfortable again..i used to break very hard, hit the headball, and the cueball would spin for like ever after the balls stopped moving......(because i was oviously not stroking it right) now boom, i break, the cueball stops!
im gonna really explore this thing alittle longer, i really think its the one thing that took me from one level to the higher level.....

there is a local woman (amber) in cda/postfalls who has very very good form SHE is the one who got me thinking about this....

another thing....i used to think it was hard to make shots, and that my aim was off.....now i just get up and make the ball....it does work and finally im shooting straight back and straight through the ball.....

.. but my question now is, since i have made the adjustment with my arm....what adjustments normally follow with my stance?

JCP,
I want to commend you on your detailed approach to working on your stroke. I will have to insist that you buy Mark Wilson's book as soon as it is available (hopefully later this year). You are EXACTLY his target audience (dedicated player, willing to work - you and I may be the only people to actually buy one though... it's going to be long...).

One of the major premises of his book is that anyone can get to a pro level of play through detailed analysis and adjustment of mechanics; IF they follow orthodox principles, and IF they have the necessary desire and dedication. Rather than just "hitting a million balls and hoping to get good" (most pro's did it that way) he prefers that the student work on specific aspects of the stroke until each is "perfected" and becomes automatic, athletic, consistent, and precise. He offers methods to achieve those goals.

While he also has great sections on the mental game and specialty shots/techniques; it will be the very first detailed analysis of what orthodox technique really means, and why it is so valuable (and also explains why the pros are NOT orthodox); and will also be the first book that offers a method that guarantee's you proficiency IF you apply the substantial effort and hours. As you have already experienced, it is the very small adjustments and improvements that when summed together lead to improvement.
