stroking system or aiming system more important?

Well first you have to decide on your target, then your aim should be dead on. After that you better have a variety of stroke techniques if you want to keep playing.

A good stroke with nothing to aim at means you are just gonna be playing by yourself.

:-)) John

In teaching beginners, when they can't get the cue ball to go where they are aiming, it is of no use to know where to aim...

Another way to look at it... If they can "sometimes" get the cue ball to go to where they are aiming, then I suppose it is also helpful to know where to aim.

Or another way... Knowing where to aim gives them "something to aim for" (no pun intended), "a goal to reach" - they can work on getting the cue ball to consistently hit where they are aiming.

So I suppose aiming first? Let's see, which came first, the chicken or the egg?

Now...read Onepocketchumps response and learn something.

I think your prepre-shot routine is most important. Before each shot, you really should wipe your cue down, powder your hands, take a sip of water, make sure your shoes are tied, pull up your pants, check your fly, walk around the table counterclock-wise three times, gather the chalk and place them over the opposite pocket you intend to make a ball and go from there.

You do all of the above and you will undoubtedly be a champion in days.

Thanks, but I already have a bulletproof preshot routine:

1) place unused ball in front of object ball I'm shooting at
2) freeze ball at contact point
3) mark spot under ball with chalk
4) use chalk to draw line on table indicating desired cb path
5) use chalk to mark desired foot positions on floor
6) line up stick to chalkmark on table
7) step into shot using chalkmarks on floor
8) get down for shot

You have all made good points. I still think that stroke is more important in pocket pool.

If you make the ball and don't stroke it correctly, you still have a shot at the table and the next ball.

If you miss the ball and stroke it perfectly, you are sitting.

Aiming (making the ball) has to be #1. imho.

Of course it is. It's the same as asking which is more important, your eyes or your arms? No arms, no shot. On the other hand, Helen Keller nearly beat me with the five and the break .... until I poisoned her dog.

I have seen people who know very little about shape (and what it takes to get there), but could make any ball they could see, become pretty damn proficient. Up to a point.

Meant that my post went right over your head. But I think it might have went over Bob's head too. Not sure though. OR maybe it is just humor from my neck of the woods. Maybe nobody got. LOL

That actually made me laugh out loud. My dog doesn't seem to get the joke, however.
