Stupid question, How do you fill out a bracket?

How are there no byes? # 1 and 2 would get a bye no?

My bad, your correct. They get rewarded for being 1 & 2 in a seeded format. That's why i used a unseeded format for 16 players and randomly pulled byes first. It prevents any *****ing.

So whats wrong with using an unseeded 10 person bracket and randomly pulling byes, which is exactly what I did. once again everyone is fixated on the numbers. Lets assume I didn't use numbers and just pulled names. 1st name on 1st line 2nd on 2nd line etc... the 7th, and 8th name pulled would end up with a bye. Completely random.

Nothing that I can think off except some people are used to the seeded format style and think that 1 don't meet 2 right off the bat. I pulled everything including byes because of people crying when they drew the best player right off the bat.

Right, so the bottom line is there is nothing wrong with what I did, people just like to complain lol. But to make it less confusing, ditch the numbers and pull names out of a hat? Even though the end result is the same.

Your bracket was correct for a 10-man tourney. Like you said, you would have been better off just putting peoples names down without the numbers. Either way, there were 2 byes, which were preceded by the 2 "preliminary" matches to set up a normal "quarterfinal" bracket, once those winners were determined.

Is anyone even looking at the sheet I posted? There were two byes, # 7 and 8, they didn't get byes into the finals, they played the winners of the first two matches. I'm so confused.

Thank you! So assuming I picked names instead of pulling numbers, would you just put the 7th and 8th name drawn as the byes? Or the 1st and 2nd? Or is that just up to the person running the tourney?

The brackets normally encountered in tournaments are usually based off the power of 2. So its 8, 16, 32, 64..up to 1024 that I only encountered at Allen Hopkins' Super Billiards Expo used.
As others pointed out, the purpose of the bye is to fill up empty slots in the first round so a bracket could work properly. ie. 10 players and 6 byes is needed to start off a 16 team bracket. So, people are trying to help in the context that they are familiar with. You need to provide accurate information so we can help.

To help understand, is this the bracket you're using? The picture you took cut off the bottom, and left out information. If you're asking for help, try not to make it harder for us who are offering to help.

Did Chris (6) plays the loser of (1) Butch (sic), if so then it looks good to me.

If you used the actual amount of players using a single or double seeded format the byes will be built in. The rest is the luck of the draw. I used the 16 seeded and drew the byes so if someone came in before the first round was over i would let them get in as long as everyone agreed, more players = more money.

One post you say you used seeded, one post you say you used unseeded, make up your mind.. lol

Yes, that is the bracket I used, and yes Chris did play the loser of 1.

Sorry thats just a quick pic I snapped to send to the person who normally runs the tourney to ask if thats how she would have done it, so it wasn't the whole bracket.

I see nothing wrong with what you did. Perhaps the confusion is due to the format of the bracket? Most pool players are used to seeing 8 man, 16, 32, or 64 man brackets. 10 is never seen. The bracket you posted was a first for me at least, and I've seen weekly brackets for 20 years now.

It actually looks like your 10 man bracket is really a 16 man bracket, where 12 players got a bye into the second round and 4 players had no bye and had to play each other in the first round. The bracket design just disguised this information by calling it a 10 man bracket with no byes instead of a 16 man bracket with byes.

Interesting, all this is new to me so I'm trying to figure it out lol. Makes sense kind of.

One post you say you used seeded, one post you say you used unseeded, make up your mind.. lol

I used seeded 16 player and if i had more then 16 I used 32 as "ctyhntr" suggested in his post. I found this to be best with less complaining. You can never get rid of byes unless your players are 16,32,64,128 and so on. I was trying to point out the difference between the two with seeded being more familiar to most players.

Guess you typoed then lol.

You;re just adding to my confusion lol. I think it's making more sense though

So we have a little tournament at the local bar every week, lately it seems to be getting littler, but thats another story lol. Anyway they person who usually runs it asked me to run it a few weeks ago, and again tonight. The players picked numbers out of a cup, I numbered the brackets the way she told me to, and put the players who drew the corresponding numbers on the lines.

She is using a random draw bracket. Anyway someone was arguing with me that I numbered it wrong. Just going by what it says on the site I got the brackets from

"The first name drawn will go on the first blank line in the tournament bracket, the second name drawn will go on the second blank line. Continue this until all of the names have been drawn, and all of the blank lines have been filled."

And of course as I'm typing this I think I figured out the problem, blind draw should be names in a hat, numbers should be seeded, but really I don't see how her method is any less "blind" then names in a hat.

Brackets confuse me. Lol. This is how I filled it out.

Also it's a little surprising to see Chris Bartram beat Corey Deuel in the first round. Chris is playing great these days!
