Stupid Rules!

Hi AZ!
So I like to consider myself a player. I have played for many years under a wide variety of rules. Over the last year I have been playing more seriously and now I can appreciate things like a good hit or safety play. I play BCA and am aware of the APA rules and even WPA rules.

Yesterday I was playing in a bar I've never played at to meet up with a friend. I end up playing the fry cook, who seemed like a decent player but definitely someone who's been in this place for a while.

While I am at the table shooting, he is behind me talking to my friend. He's telling her all this bulls#!t about how I have to call every little touch the ball takes. Saying stuff like "look, he's gonna hit the point before it goes in. He's supposed to call that."

Now, I am very familiar with bar rules. I played bar rules exclusively for many years. All the bars I've ever played at is call shot, with any bank, kiss, or carom requiring it's own call. But this guy is talking about my shots aren't good cause I touched the rail on the way in, or rattled the pocket a bit. Calling me some kind of cheater or something.

I normally have no problem playing by the standard bar rules of the place but this seems really excessive. I feel like he was just trying to shark me cuz I was shooting him full of holes in his own place. I'm all about playing fairly and by the rules, but doesn't his rules sound like way too much...

Does anybody play with such ridiculous rules?
Are these standard bar rules somewhere out there?
Was this guy being a dick or am I missing something...

Standard Bar Rules is an oxymoron; no such thing.

Sure, he could have been sharking you but one man's ridiculous can be another man's standard.

I have never seen anyone seriously play pool in that manner. Who is going to be the judge on every shot,,whether it hit the edge of the pocket on the way in???

The OB can hit the rail ,usually ,up to first diamond on the way in and it is a good shot.

If a guy is serous, I guess you could play that way,,,not me,,,but it could be done.

When you walk into a bar - ANY bar - and you're playing pool, all you know about rules are out the window. That bar, and its regulars, set the rules. However ridiculous they may be, it's up to you to know them, and if you're the better player, EXPLOIT THEM.

For instance, make sure you watch his shots veeeeery closely when he's shooting if the "call all rails" idiot rule is in place. Makes him nervous, and possibly aware of the rule's ridiculousness.

Also, when rules state that safeties are not allowed, I will intentionally miss and hang my ball in the pocket if I have no shot, or scratch on purpose.

Stuff like this is exactly why I don't play in a bar. Last year I played someone who came in & asked to play as their girlfriend or wife looked on. I told them sure I'll play as my friend was on a break getting a drink.

I play the 6 ball & bank it in the side pocket by where I was standing. He was like you didn't call that you were going to bank it. I turned around & said for starters you never said anything about call shot before we started. Secondly winner makes the rules in any bar I have ever attended. Lastly it was only one logical pocket for the ball to go in as it could not go anywhere else.

My last remark was after I ran the rest of the rack out & told him when you want to play serious pool, let me know & I will take you to play on a man's table. He shut up & never came back.

"99! It's the old 6 ball bank in the side with a 3 titty rattle trick"

These are the only rules I will play with. Everything else is pure luck.

KK9 <- bar "rules" are oxy-moron

OMG.... I just brought this to the attention of my GF, who can play pretty good... To exemplify how people play bar rules by what they were shown...

I asked her: "If you are playing 8 ball, and you're shooting and calling the 6 ball straight into the corner pocket, and you HIT the inside of the pocket and make the 6 ball - is that a legal shot?"

GF reply "NO! That is slop."

KK9 <-- just poured a double (but maybe it's BIH (bottle in hand) because my vodka grazed the side of my glass)

Was he calling all of his shots that way?

He was actually shooting pretty sporty when I was first watching him. He made a good looking shot with two of his solids frozen together mid-table. Of course by BCA rules that's a good hit but questionable under "bar rules", since chances are the pocketed OB touched the other solid or the CB hit the other solid first. I gave him the benefit of the doubt since he has yet to open his mouth and is shooting like he knows what he's doing. He made a couple more balls and moved the rock decently enough then he missed one pretty bad.

We were playing doubles and I had to wait a bit for my inning. When I came up we had 4 stripe and the 8 left. I made the first one pretty easy and that is when he started yappin his mouth behind me. This started to bother me a little bit so I had to tell him he was crazy and playing by some ghetto rules. So I continued to play the way we were playing, regular call shot bar rules. I ran out the rest of the rack, intentionally touching rails and rattling pockets but playing call shot as normal.

Then, he apparently had some timely orders come into the kitchen and he had to bail. (Convenient) It didn't stop him from walking by the table and saying "They're still playing cheater ball over there huh..." What a bag! (short for douchebag)

I didn't get a chance to play him again, so no chance to call him out on his stupidity...

It's pretty smple for me. If somebody wants to play me at a bar, I will play if we play "league rules". If they don't know what that is, I just say call which ball and which pocket, hit your own ball first, and BIH anywhere after a foul or a scratch.

Once played a guy that was nudging his balls around playing safe without a rail after contact. He was a loud mouth and beat 2 of my buddies out of $5 each. His rantings got louder for the ladies when my turn came I said let's play for $20. He agreed and I proceeded to use his own tactics against him. He never got a clean shot as I took the cash.

He laughed and said, "You know how much money I make by cheating the rules? You won't believe the guys that will play you knowing these aren't the correct rules."

I said, "I'm not the loser here." He didn't play rest of the night.

All I play in are bars, and yes,it gets to be a pain in the ass.I even made a thread about it.Everyone around here plays 8 ball as straight 8-ball, but expect you to call it if your OB is gonna kiss another ball.I recently lost a game because when I shot the 8,it kissed my opponent's object ball and I didn't call it.It sucks, but is what it is. Once you get used to them, you can use them to win.
