So much has been written about the mental aspect of the game I thought it might be a good idea to exercise the old mind for a while. Therefore I have begun Sudoku. It is quite challenging, at least for me, and kind of fun, too.
you know, you never know...

No similarity in the thought process between the two disciplines.
Sudoku is very intense reasoning, depending on your level, while pool is more instinctive. Not much thought involved, just do what's in front of you.
Have you ever heard the phrase : "you missed the shot because you thought about it too much"?
Actually, you can think yourself out of a shot. Just let the subconscious play.
It already knows what to do.

Sudoku is fun, but it all comes down to using logic and deduction.

Pool is more about memory and physical execution.

I like them both.

good points all.
but do you think the focus that is required in sudoku could be a transferrable skill?
thx

getting back to my puzzle now.

ok, I just solved my first medium difficulty puzzle. 45 minutes if you are counting.
a good friend of mine has told me....
" If you think it is working for you, it is working for you"
I will continue.
good games to you all

Steven,

Just a comment about transfer. It is well known that Efren plays chess, a lot of it. Back when I played chess moderately well, three to five moves ahead on the entire board, I could also read the patterns on the pool table in seconds. I often read the table and had running the table with either set of balls planned playing eight ball or running out to a safety as I walked up to the table. Nine ball was even easier to see patterns all the way through. Did chess help my pool or pool help my chess? I think they fed off of each other.

Exercising our minds is probably as important at the higher levels as practicing our shots or becoming mentally tough by competing or gambling regularly.

what rules apply to an initial break in sudoku? And do you play from behind the string after a scratch?

(:))

I think it will help your Pool game

I believe Sudoku will help your concentration, help you see patterns, and exercise your mind. I can tell how much sleep I have had in the last week or the level of stress I am under, just by doing a couple of Sudoku puzzles.

Congratulations on your first medium puzzle. You will find as you move to the harder puzzles and gain confidence that you will progress more quickly just like in Pool.

I also don't see how anyone could disagree that exercising your mind, gaining confidence, being able to see patterns quickly and easily and practicing concentrating would not be good for your pool game.

Just be careful Sudoku can be quite addicting.
