Sugartree VS. Dale Perry cues

I have a Dale Perry custom 1 of 1 cue, and it is pretty nice, hit's good, but I can't stand the taper on it. I have always played with 314's and the Intimidator series from McDermott, also with an OB1, even stock viking shafts, and their tapers are all ALOT longer than the DP taper, which drives me nuts. I have a Sugartree on the way, and I was wondering what type of taper comes with those shafts? Anyone?

Sugartree all the way. Kinda like comparing a pinto to a corvette.

I have heard this from lots of people, but I am more looking for an answer on the taper's. I hate the short taper on the DP, is the sugartree's longer than DP's?

can't remember DPs taper (used to own one) but Sugartree has unique taper.

If you are used to 314 taper, you will find sugartree to be short (come down about a foot and then fatten up).

I figured it would be similar. That's how the DP is. short taper then FAT. I guess I will see how it is when I get her! ;)

I'm pretty sure eric will do the taper the way you want it - if you tell him

Hey man my Sugartree thickens up around 12 inches with my bridging finger if you will. It doesn't get super big immediately after the 12 inches though like some cues do. He isn't crazy about changing the taper because i have always had cues built that got super fat quick for the stiffness (or what i thought would be stiffness, not sure) but trust me it is not a super fast transition like I have seen and it hits as solid as any that have gotten fat quicker. Just leave it up to him man I promise you you will be satisfied with it. Hope this helps some, as far as the hit I have hit with several DP's and there is absolutely no comparison, ST all the way, Trav Dorn.

I meant Sugartrees are way better than DPs. My DP hits okay, but it's not too great.

You can always go to your local cue repairman and get any shaft re-tapered to your specs. Just be sure you know exactly what your specs are and err on the side of caution as you can always take more off later.

I might have mentioned this somewhere before... a cuemaker has some unique things that identify a cue with them. Whether it's the rings, bumper type, ferrule material/length, etc. In this case I know Eric has developed a taper that works for his cues and provides a Sugartree hit/feel.

I know he does experiment with different things to include the taper. He provided me a new shaft with a new taper. In all honesty I couldn't tell the difference. As I played with the shaft though to provide him thorough feedback, it has become my primary shaft.

Why do I say any of this? I believe if you purchase a true custom cue (Sugartree, Southwest, Scruggs, Hunter Classic, etc) then you purchase the way the cuemaker recommends/suggests. I do agree though the customer should be able to say I want a 60" inch ebony/ivory cue with 8 points/butterflies and certain inlay design. You work closely with the cuemaker during the design process if built from scratch. Finally once you both agree on the design let the cuemaker run with it. Of course if the cuemaker says yes I can do that then that is great. If the cuemaker is hesitant then there must be a reason.

When I bought my first Hunter Classic this was the way it worked. Wes worked with my ideas/theme and built a Hunter Classic that incorporated what I was looking for. When I bought my Sugartree the cue was already built. Both cues have their unique characteristics that you have to adapt to. The Hunter Classic has the inlays, the Sugartree doesn't. The Hunter Classic has a straighter conical taper while the Sugartree has his version of a protaper.

Now here's the thing. If you want a Sugartree with all the intricate inlays, it will not happen. Don't get me wrong Eric will build a fancy/show cue with some fantastic ringwork that plays lights out. DISCLAIMER: I in no way represent Eric or Sugartree cues so he might well build a cue with gold and diamond inlays, I just doubt it would ever happen. You would need to talk with Eric.:smile::smile:

What does all this long post mean..... absolutely nothing. Since I've never shot with a DP then I can't vouch for them. I currently shoot with a Sugartree and I can honestly say you will be happy with yours when it arrives.

I heard Sugar Tree's shaft taper is New Mexico Sunwood style.
Makers should really offer at least three tapers.
"Pro", " modified-pro" and stiff imo.

I do not think Sugartree tapers are as drastic as DP. When I had a couple DP cues I sent them back to him and had him retaper as I cannot stand it. To me with DP standard taper the cue feel weird.
