Super Aramith Pro TV balls -- white is yellow?

Just bought a new set of these balls and they came in a sealed package with the proper logo so I know they're legit. But the white areas on all of the balls looks pretty yellowed, as does the cue ball. None of the pictures I've seen look like that, but then again they're probably taken with a flash which brightens up the white.

Is this normal, perhaps made that way for the TV cameras?

The white is discolored to ensure that the highlights don't get blown out by the TV lights when on camera (cameras have a much more limited contrast range than the human eye).

In response to Junkyarddog, I've had an Aramith TV cue ball since they were first released, and they've never been white.

I will take a pic of mine when I get home but the cue looks like any other measle cue ball to me. I could be mistaken by white I didn't mean bright bright white. But it is no different than a new red circle or a Brunswick blue circle. Both are slightly off white perhaps an ivory but not what I would consider yellow.

It was hard to take a picture that is a good representation of what my eyes see, but here's my best shot. I put the balls on a white piece of paper for comparison.

I'm thinking that the comment about this being on purpose because of the TV lights makes sense. Just using a flash on my test resulted in the white being pretty white.

Ive seen them both white and yellow under the same lighting. Not sure why.

I could've sworn I read previously on AZB the yellowing is due to the formulation of the phenolic resin. Didn't one of the retailers took one out of their window display and cut a measles ball in half. I don't remember if the yellowing was only on the surface, which would suggest UV/sunlight damage.

They might turn a little whiter after they are out of the box for a while.
Don't ask me why but balls will turn yellowish when stored in the darkness of the box.

I would have thought the other way: That after a while, out of the box, the balls would yellow. Interesting.

My old sets of aramith balls are yellow as shown above (these were from the mid-90's and had the red-triangle CB). My latest sets (all non-TV) are much whiter...but not pure white. The measles CB I bought recently is slightly yellow.

I would say if you get a set of aramiths that are pure white, you should question their authentisity.

That's exactly how they're supposed to look. Shine 5,000-10,000 watts of light at that ball and it will look nice and white on the video monitor.

I have a set of the same balls and they look just like yours. I never gave it much thought because they are round and still roll. Now what I have notice is that the Measles CB plays different than the Red Dot CB. I put it on a scale and the Red Dot ball is heavier. I find myself adjusting to Red Dot ball when I go to my local pool hall. I have also notice that when I use Blue Diamond chalk on the Measles CB it tends to grab and lift more ( This is a bad thing not a good thing) than Blue Diamond chalk on a Red Dot CB. My solution was to switch to using a Red Dot CB instead of the Measles CB that came with the set.

Note: Red Dot CB by Aramith not to be confused with the Measles CB by Aramith.

I appreciate everyone who chimed in with some info on this subject. It seems I got what I was supposed to get, even though I'm a bit disappointed in the look. Maybe I'll just need to get brighter lights for the table.

Interesting comment about the weights.....every ball in this set is 168g except the cue ball and the 1 ball, which are 169g. Wonder if that's on purpose, seeing as those two would get the most punishment, especially on breaks.

Hi there,

The photo u took, it's origional set.

The pure white ball TV ball is from different factory.

The story was last year, a friend of mine from china said he had a contact of TV ball with good price and it had about 3000sets, I brought 20 sets.

At same time, I had few sets like yours in stock as well, but when I received what I order from china then the box and papers are same but the white ball different with my few sets, it also contain extra chinese introduction page.........

Also the looks like the white ball very white one was very easy to get dirty...........

It may help..........
