Superstitions......... Am I the Only One?

I'm a fairly green person, and like to think I care about the environment.

I have used Tom's toothpaste for a while, and like it, and I know they are a company that seems to care about the environment. So when I saw they had a deodorant out, I bought some as well. I played Shannon's GSBT tournament this past weekend, and at the same time, opened the deodorant for the first time to try it.

I played worst pool than I have in quite some time, and didn't feel comfortable playing at all. My concentration and stroke weren't good at all.

Needless to say, I won't be wearing Tom's deodorant anymore when I play tournaments. Environment or not, it's back to the Right Guard Speed Stick for me.

This is just a hint at my superstitious nature when I play. There are many other things just as hairy that I believe when I play.

I have heard that all pool players are superstitious, but are they really that bad?

I always say I'm not stupid-stitious, but I do like to chew gum, bubble-gum that is, when I play....and use my own chalk.....maybe a few other "minor" things.......but nothing as odd as wearing a particular pair of underwear, shoes, etc.

I do wear certain shirts, and while not a specific pair, but always black underwear when I am playing in a tournament. I also find that I have certain pre-tournament rituals that if I don't follow them I do not have the concentration to compete.

As long as you use SOME kind of deodorant. By the way, who the hell is Tom and why did he let you use his toothpaste and deodorant?
 
superstitions

Following superstitions are just a way to increase your confidence. The entire sport I was in had superstitions when I started way back when. I decided early on that they were probably meaningless but why take a chance? There were competitors that could be badly sharked by even being around them with something that it was bad luck to have around and I saw somebody get knocked ass over teakettle for throwing peanut hulls in a stock car. Afterwards the driver had the seat taken out to check for peanut hulls under it before he would drive the car.

Superstitions

Not by a long shot Mike. I once always carried an old Victory nickel when I played . I lost it and have had no luck since. I had an old pair of bell bottoms back in the day with aces on the back pockets. Wore them playing pool until they could be patched no more.
 
One time when I was about 19, I accidentally packed a pair of my (then) girlfriend's socks while going to a big open event. Long story short,I ended up having to wear them on Sunday, as I had no others and no time to go buy more. Finished 5/6 or 7/8 out of 128 players, with quite a few champions in it. I took those bad boys to every touney for a year:eek:
 
I can't believe I'm sharing this story...

I too have a funny superstition, ritual, habbit... call it what you will. But when I go to different pool rooms and states, I will only go to same stall... whatever I started the day with to the end of the tourney, unless I loose a match. Then I pick another stall...

Is that too weird?-?-?

!!! Man, I knew I should had kept that one to myself... It's even worse than that "Energy Stone" that supposed to help you win matches... Mike Janis used to sell whole lot of those...

Superstition

I have this weird little ritual that I do when I wash my hands after I used hair gel, I think about my hands being sticky from the gel all day. I do realize that this is absolutely OCD at it's finest but for some reason that sticky A$$ hair gel just freaks me out at the thought of it being on my hands when I'm trying to play.
 
Ok, you got me. I don't believe in supersitions and think it is weak thinking if you allow a supersition to govern how you play or to justify how you play.

However, it never fails that if I wear this one particular shirt I am guaranteed to lose a match. The same damn thing goes for this particular pair of pants. I should get rid of both of the damn things but I hate to throw away good clothes. They are the unluckiest pieces of clothing I have ever had and won't even think about giving them to a needy charity for fear of what they might do to the poor fool wearing them.

I could go on about the bad luck experiences I have had with particular traveling companions but I don't want anyone to think that I am superstitious.

Ever since I lost that damn Gold Tip Tapper, my game has creeped forward ever so slowly but still forward but surely it can't be that it was bad luck.

People say bananas on a boat are bad luck but everytime I carry a banana as a snack, my tournament luck on the table improves. I don't want anyone to think that I believe bananas bring good luck but I'll be damned if I don't win more often win I eat the darn things.

When I am at a tournament and playing well if I make a telephone call to a particular family member, you can bet your next month's rent I will not win the next match. I'm snake bit some time but hardly superstitious, no way.

NO, I am not supersitious but I'll be damned if you will catch me wearing those plaid pants and striped shirt together ever again.

I agree with Hu. theyre probably meaningless but why take the chance? If it gives you more confidence then more power to you.


i cant think of any right off the top of my head but im sure i will later. When i do ill post again.

Green was supposed to be bad luck around stock cars back in the day. I was careful not to wear a green shirt to work on Fridays in case I got jammed for time and didn't get home before the races. It finally happened and I had to race in a green T-shirt.(Shows how long it has been, my late model "driver's uniform" was T-shirt, blue jeans, and low top tennis shoes that let my ankles bend better than boots.)

The next morning I threw away that green T-Shirt and every other green shirt I had, matter of fact, every article of green clothing. I haven't owned anything green to wear since then. Not that I'm superstitious . . . . :D :D :D

When Nike came out with golf balls, my buddy teed off with his and hit what we call a snap hook... He teed up another since that one was OB snd again snap hook! Well i told him let me see one so i teed it up and guess what...SNAP HOOK!! LOL!! We have sworn to never play with another Nike golf ball ever again...lol!!! These games are soooo mental..lol!!

i think it was grady or pretty boy floyd i heard that said he had a lucky shirt and wouldn't change it sometimes for tournaments.
