Supplied air?....

Less expensive than the doctor bills. Thats right you guys get almost free health care. It is still very hard to put a price on your health.

I agree Chris that our health is the most important but venting outside isn't the only viable option. Good filtration on the dust collector and air scrubbers do a fairly good job of cleaning the air and you can still wear a mask on top of that. I have found with tapering if you have the inlet of the suction tube in the right location in relation the cutter I have almost nothing for dust or chips accumulated on the lathe after a day of cutting.

I'm still trying to figure out how to put a spout by the cutter on a Taper Shaper.
Something that will not introduce drag or vibration to it .

Setup in my shop!

This is the setup in my shop for 2 CNC machines and Taper Shaper machine. It keeps out all of the dust especially if you put the dust collection in another location away from your shop. This also cuts down on noise in my shop - with Quiet routers I never know the pass is even done most of the time. 3/4" white melamine with 1 fluorescent light and you have enough light for surgery! :)

IMHO, getting the right dust collector is imperative. For those of you that don't know about Clearvue Cyclones I would suggest you check it out! The unit I purchased is the CVMax. I plumbed to all machines using ASTM 2729 S & D pipe. Was about $3000 with the hose, fittings, pipe, 6" to 2 x 4" reducers with blast gates built into the reducers. I've got it plumbed to about 12 machines, and have plans for another 7-10. The cartridge filters & the cyclone combined keep this shop almost spotless! The only dust that survives will be eliminated when I plumb the rest in! Any other dust collector is COMPLETELY inferior to the CVMax! Don't waste your time trying to save money to buy some cheaper machine...you get what you pay for. However, it pays to be knowledgeable about dust collection when you go to invest! Check out Bill Pentz's website! Pictures forthcoming! FYI, any system that uses bags and not the cartridge filters is almost USELESS!

Kudo's to that!

I have a CVMax and it does work very well. It's certainly not big enough for everything, but it handles our turning centers pretty well.

The only issue I've had with it was with my 4 blade saw machine. The chips off that machine are long and stringy, and when you run 4 at a time, back to back, all day, all week, every week, enough of them get through the cyclone and plug the filters. My solution was to add a second cyclone between the saw machine and the CVMax. Presto, problem solved. No motor or fan, just the extra cyclone that catches the excess stringy chips when we're really going.

On a smaller less expensive note, the single shop vac sized Dust Deputy works very well too. Of course, it's really for just one machine, but I've got a few of them strategically placed and they do wonders. I just can't plumb the CVMax far enough to handle everything.

I called Ed Morgano before I bought mine and asked him if was ever gonna make a 10 HP unit. He said no. If you ever outgrow the CVMax, just buy another one and place it caddy corner and run it down the other wall! It's still cheaper than buying bigger units and works great!
