Spent a few days in Santa Cruz earlier this week. Took my sticks with me hoping to play a bit while I was down there. Checked into the hotel, and lo and behold there was an advertisement for this place in the little binder in my room. It's located smack in the middle of downtown Santa Cruz (900 block of Pacific Ave to be specific).

Went inside and was amazed at how nice this place is. Definitely the nicest room I've been in. All Brunswick Gold Crown IV's. 20+ tables in the place, with a nice layout so there's no bumping elbows. 2 rows along both walls, and 3 in the middle. I asked the bartender if any of the tables were shimmed. He said no, but the 3 in the middle had 4" pockets (I had to chuckle a little). Prices were a little steep at $10/hour, but they cut a break if you're playing by yourself (like I was) and charge $6/hour. Drink prices were as expected, a little high compared to what I'm used to.

They advertised as being one of the "10 Best New Pool Rooms Of 2008" by Billiards Digest. Again, I had to chuckle a little bit. In this day and age with rooms closing left and right, I wouldn't doubt if there were only 10 new rooms opened in 2008.

I chose one of the tight tables in the middle. Table played absolutely level and the cloth and rails were in great shape. Perfect racks first try every time. All tables were clothed with Simonis 860 as far as I could tell. All but 1 were in a dark/royal blue color, which I quickly realized I wasn't a fan of. The 1 off color was red (ughh). Place was pretty much empty both times I went in.

If you happen to find yourself in the Santa Cruz area, this place definitely seems to be the place to play. Just be prepared to pay for it. Also, if you're drinking I'd recommend beer. Their drinks were pretty weak for the price (3 7&7's and I didn't catch anything but a swollen bar tab, let alone a buzz).

I wonder what changed there. I was in the place a year or so ago and they had Gold Crown 4's. Simonis tournament Blue cloth with that one pink clothed table in the middle. But the tables were definitely GC4's.

Their website still shows the GC's in the featured pictures.

Are these not the same tables anymore? That would be a bummer.

Did you play in that 8 ball tournament they hold Tues or Wednesday night? It was mainly bangers from the 7' tables around the various areas bars following the tournament trail. Quick event, double elimination race to 1 so I entered knowing I'd be back at my hotel at a decent hour (I was up there working). After I took it down I left town feeling like a carpetbagger, lol.

I gave a student a lesson in that room in 2005, but it had a different name then. Perhaps it's changed hands a couple of times since then.

Thanks for the review Baxter, I will be heading to that area soon and was thinking of shooting a little. I will also be near Fast Eddy's Billiards so who knows I might get a chance to hit both of them.

They actually have a pretty good set up out there but the top locals prefer Fast Eddy's in Capitola.

Yeah, FE probably has more action, Surf City is more of a "family" type place in that regard. I checked out Fast Eddie's while I was up there but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. When I got there some jerk came up to me in the parking lot, interrupted me while I was on the phone and kept bugging me to play $5K sets. He followed me in, wouldn't leave me alone and proceeded to hassle me at my table to play for at least $1K. When I finally got rude and basically told him to F off he called me a nit and told me I'm an idiot cuz I just cost myself $10K. I'm just way past that in my life where I need that chaotic crap.

Probably just an isolated incident and other than that I liked the place (though certainly not as "nice" as Surf City) but I'm in no hurry to go back.

I still wonder what happened to the GC4's they had in Surf City. I'm trying to think of a scenario where they would have gotten rid of all of them just to replace them with lesser Brunswicks. Not to mention what a hassle that would be for a 2nd floor pool room.

Baxter - please take a look at the pictures on the website I linked and tell me if those are the tables you saw there. If so they are GC4's.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience at Eddy's. Makes me wonder who the hell was barking at you, and why. Did you get a name (if so, PM me)? I know most of the players out there and they are ususally stand-up folks.

Same tables so I must be mistaken. I'm not very familiar with Brunswicks at all. We only have Diamonds around here. I saw no kind of identification anywhere on the table, so I assumed they weren't GC's. My mistake.

I went in there on Monday and Tuesday afternoons and there was no mention of a tournament made to me. If I would have known, I would have played. On Tuesday as I was finishing up, a couple people started filtering in. I figured it was league play, because the leagues were advertised. Bummer.

I read some reviews of Fast Eddie's, and none were very favorable. They all left the impression that out-of-towners weren't readily welcomed there. I was with my girlfriend and her son, and I really didn't want to bother with anything that could be a hassle. If I were by myself, I'd have checked it out. Next time.

If you can go to one, you can go to the other. They're pretty much a 15 minute drive from each other.

No problem. I thought maybe if you weren't used to seeing GC's (which as it turns out you said you're not, lol) you might have been thrown off by the flush pockets. They went to these on the 4's and 5's.

Yeah, didn't get his name. He even left me a nasty-gram on the windshield of my rental car that I found when I left to go back the airport in San Jose reminding me how I'm a moron and could have taken $20 grand off him if I'd played. I'm not convinced the guy was even a pool player. I'm just thankful he didn't screw with the car.

The folks at the counter, a gal and some guy were quite nice actually. I'd give it a try again, I'm fairly comfortable in almost any pool hall whether it's plushed out or a dive. Funny how I'll steer clear of bad neighborhoods and stuff but feel home in just about any pool room anywhere - as long as the parking lot is well lit, lol!;) Maybe it's because in a pool room I've always got a weapon in my hands. :D

It sounds like we are cut from the same cloth. Once I am inside a hall I don't have a problem, I hung out in many places when I was younger that were rough. I have walked out of a few rooms with my cue shaft in the case and the butt out of it.;)

Dogs, by all means, give the place another try. The place is run by our own fellow AZ'er, nfty9er. If you get the chance to meet him (he's there a lot), tell him you know me and he'll treat you like a king.

First of all sir, there are not 20 tables at Surf City, there are 15, which just shows your observations are lacking. The biggest complaint when they opened was the tables were too close together, and you can see that from the website picture. You can also figure out the layout and 15 table count. They may have seemed far apart to you because nobody was in the friggin place and you played on one of the tables that had a little more room longway but not sideway. Why they changed to dark blue and red from tournament blue and pink(lol) is beyond me unless the yuppy college kids like it. Look at their hours, is that the hours of a legitimate pool room? Don't get me wrong, I don't mind them in town competing cause the more people playing pool the better but man when they first opened it took them six months to even put spots on the tables. The owners are a fine bunch but know nothing about running a pool room. And as for the price, come on your from Northern California, tell me how many pool rooms in San Jose, just over the hill charge 10 or less. Zilch. How much does CBC in Mt. View charge? Way more.
More to follow.

Did not the original o.p. say they were GC4's? That is what I read unless he went back and corrected it. They did change awhle ago the color of the tables. Don't know why.
More late for you.

Great

Again, the original op says GC4, and that is still what they have except for new ugly cloth.

Wow are you wrong on Surf City being the family place. They now have hard liquor and want to cater to college crowd and try for the ladies with half price pool. All Fast Eddy's advertising is geared to family room early and party crowd late. We have most kids out by 11. We cater to tons of kids birthday parties(not really tons) but a lot. We have a private enclosed room for that. Does this sound like less a family room? I think not.
As for your story of your experience in front of my establishment. That has got to be embellished. Like to know for the life of me who that could be. First there is no one left here that has that kind of money to challenge a stranger to that kind of game. The people I know here that do gamble have no personality or mode of operation that wold lend to what you are saying. If that happened you should have complained to my help or asked what the deal was at least. That kind of attitude is basically not allowed but probably uncontrollable. I cannot believe it happened that way. It sounds like just some drunk that got out of line or did not like your looks. I would apologize for that.
Can u remember what night or day of the week and time. My help has been the same for years on the same nights. I would like to know if they remember something like that and also how long ago?

Maybe I am wrong, not for Nor Cal like your avatar indicates. Where are the diamonds then, I am unaware of any but may be wrong.
