Surge's Salute to The Hustler

the mural is really looking great....
thanks for the updates patrick

Marie's is where I cut my pool teeth, along with most of the good players in Chicago at the time (early 70's)...I loved the place. Everybody played there...Dallas West, Wendall Wier, Leon Ledford, Tommy Spencer, Tom Karabatsos, Joey Gold, Waterdog, Mexican Paul, Preacher, and a thousand others that escape my mind right now! It was THE room in Chicago after Bensingers closed down!

Ah...the memories! My first real teacher, Frank Oliva, lived right around the corner, a couple of blocks away!

PS...I was just out at Hard Times last month. Sorry to have missed you!
I used to see most of those guys, including Frank Oliva, at Chris’s too.

Very true Pat...but at the time, Chris Crisman had not yet opened his room. It opened a couple of years later! Frank had the longest running women's pool league in the country...and it continued for decades after he passed away (1993 iirc). As payback to my mentor Frank, I was honored to help many of those women get better, and even more honored to be asked to do a short exhibition at their 35th anniversary dinner at Jim Parker's IBC!

Frank and his brother, I believe were involved in the room at Harlem & Irving plaza back in the day. Nice man.

Scott you reminded me of some good old memories at Marie,s .The first time i took my wife to play a tourn. She played Leons wife Sandy ,Patty Yeager,(and won) .Wendal Wier came over to Iowa with Tommy and a guy named Gamboni after Tommy took me around Chi. Got me in actin with Dick Weaver and Campos..Marie,s was really neat to an Iowa guy.Tommy K still around?

Please follow up with another picture once it has been completed. It is going to look great if the rest is as good as what is shown.

I really like the antique Brunswick pool table legs at the end of the bench!

Will Prout
Me too. The skirt on the long table is rails from the same table. It was a Brunswick Pfister billiards table, probably over 100 years old and too far gone to save.
