SVB and reality tv

I just read the newspaper article "The Natural" about SVB and one thing struck me that seemed just thrown in there. Towards the end of the article the mention there has been talk about a reality tv show following Shane around to tournaments and I'm sure it would include day to day life. WOW...Am i the only one that thinks that IF there was interest in something like this that the pool community (I guess Shane in this case) needs to jump on it? We all know how culturally imprinting tv (and addicting especially reality tv) is and I feel like a show like this on the right channel could boom pool maybe unlike it ever has before. Tv is responsible for the poker boom and then UFC exploding as a fan sport. This could be that different approach considering standard tournament matches on ESPN just isn't cutting it. I really hope someone does something like this and Shane to me is a once in a lifetime pick as the perfect candidate for it. First of all, he's arguably the best in the game right now. Secondly, he's got that mental prowess and physical fitness which makes him the Tiger Woods of our game. He is a player we love to root for. I think the biggest factor could be the fact that he plays big money matches as well (great for tv) yet he still maintains a clean lifestyle and has good morals. Basically he's a straight edge bad ass!:p A show like this could completely engorge people into the game while maintaining a clean image.

I don't know how excited the general population would get watching a guy practice pool for 12 hours a day.

I doubt Shane causes enough drama to get people that interested. Lock him in a house with a bunch of other gamblers and you may have something. . .

Lol...obviously the show wouldn't consist of him practicing. More the unglamorous but rush of a lifestyle. It would be an honest look at the game and it's characters. It's documented that there is interest for the show...whether that means from producers or what have you it wasn't Shane bringing it up. Someone wants to make a show and I think it's been proven that you can make anything a successful reality show with the proper "character(s)" and with good production.

It would be neat.

Who would have thunk a few years back we would be watching crab fisherman and truck drivers??

I always thought a reality show about someone trying to break into big-time pool or road hustling would be good.

"Your a Natural character"

"I've been telling her that, I've got natural character"

I love the idea of a reality show for pool. They could also consider doing it like worlds deadliest catch and follow a few players. Think about switching between Shane, Johnny, and Mika then throw in some comic relief with Rodney and Danny Basivich, they would need to follow Earl for what he is known for then a few up and comers that people want to root for like Adam Smith and Stevie Moore. They would also need some female players like Jasmin and Allison. Just another thought

I would rather watch a come back show about Keith mccreedy lol.

Good point. I would also really like to see it formatted with maybe 3 or 4 different players. People in my generation know the show True Life which follows 3 people per episode who all have whatever that episode's subject is in common. I think a few different players, including like you said, different sexes and maybe some over seas would make it pretty interesting.

Blair Thein has been working on a pool reality show for close to 10 years. It's the "Pool, Poker & Pain" , the first 2 self explanatory, the pain is MMA fighting. I hope he gets it off the ground soon! http://www.poolpokerandpain.com/ind...tent&view=category&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=50

it has potential, but the theme seems jumbled and misguided to me.

Pool needs a REAL reality show on an actual network. I've always said this... way too many characters and crazy stories not to be getting it on film.

I totally agree. If pool is going to have another little explosion it will happen from a well planned and organized source. If the show was well produced and could attract the general public I could see it working. Like you said, too many characters and stories for it to not be doable.

I have spent my share of days in the life with Shane. It would be a short show. Wake up, work out, play/practice,eat then sleep. Rinse and repeat.

Mix in the odd action match against the best in the world and a brutal travel schedule.

It could be made interesting if shot and edited right but Shane is just such a good guy he doesnt start sh!t with anyone ever. He just wants to shoot everyones nuts in and go have dinner.

You want a reality TV show? Get Keith out of retirement follow him around for 2 months before the Derby or Open out on the road getting back in stroke. Put him with a young gun to spice it up. Lot could be done with that mix. People want characters and stories that are instantly recognizable.

The more I've thought about it and the more I've heard from other people the more I tend to agree that a mix of a couple different players would be great. Definitely like the idea bout stickin Keith with a young gun. Maybe Morra? I would also mix in maybe a successful road player (if that even exists anymore) a top level pro with a wild side and a female player. Following multiple players would show the multiple sides of the game and see the different characters and lifestyles associated with the game.

Hmmm . . . who do we know with the contacts and the video equipment that could shoot a pilot to pitch? This could be someone's big break.

Looks like its all on you Justin! Just think, it would be good for TAR too. Thanks for taking responsibility for this :D

How have we made it this far in the discussion of a pool reality show without mentioning Dippy Dave as a character? Reality TV succeeds because the general public wants to see train wrecks and root against them. Could there possibly be a bigger villain/character foil to Shane than the Viffer himself? Would there be anyone who wouldn't watch a season finale of Shane vs. Dippy playing a 15 ahead set of 9 ball for 100k, with Dippy getting the breaks, BIH and the 4 out? I can imagine Dippy chirping at Shane and the rail for hours, then the camera cuts to Shane turning off his hearing aid before running out the next rack. Then cut to a shot of Scott Frost and Billy Incardona smiling. Or Dippy stiffing Shane after the match, and then making excuses in the confessional about how Shane tried to shark him.

I'd watch that for sure.

Johnny

HAHAHHA sounds like a winner for sure. Dippy is DEFINITELY a character and with the sort of money he likes to play with it would sure make it interesting. That has an Emmy written all over it

with all the stupid reality shows on TV, I can't see how this would not work.

cake shows
fishing shows
jersey shore
fear factor
cooking shows
challenge shows
real world
dirty jobs
golf shows
etc...

I think the key is:

Joe Rogan + Fatboy + JCIN + interesting pool player(s) = $$$$$$$$$$$

I REALLY like the idea of Joe Rogan being involved. I think he would be a natural, if he would do it. Nothing against the others you mentioned, they'd be great too, but Joe would really put it over the top!
