Was surprised to see SVB break and play with same cue, what kind of cue he is playing with and what weight??

I'm actually surprised players don't do this more often. There's no cue you're more comfortable with than your playing-cue. I didn't see the match but if he wasn't breaking hard, there's no real need to switch cues.

He was breaking hard, Harder than anyone else that I saw play on the stream table. He was basically using his ten ball break where he pops up the cue ball. It helps that Shane plays with a very hard tip.

He plays with a Kamui Hard. They are reallly hard. He has been breaking with his playing cue for quite some time now.

Whether he uses a break cue may depend on the type of break he is using. In the US Open, it didn't look like he was using the pop and stop break, but instead sending the cue ball up toward the top rail.

He goes back and forth, this is the first time in a while I saw him break with his playing cue, for the last while he was using his break cue.

Back in 2007, 2008 and maybe 09 (before cuetec) he only broke with his playing cue I believe.

I do the same thing.I traded my jump/break cue for a jumper and I break with my Pred shooter.

IMO the only reason not to is to save the tip on your shooter.

I also break with my playing cue. I can pop it and stop it very consistently. With my break cue, I am MUCH less consistent with parking the ball, but it does transfer a little more power. If the table is not breaking well and I really need to crush em, I'll pull out the break cue. But if balls are dropping, I'll use my playing cue to make sure I always leave the cue ball center table. Some guys use their break cue even for soft breaks which I've never understood. I hit my controlled break 25-26 mph pretty consistently and have never had an issue with my tip/ferrule/joint.

For what it's worth, when he played Chris Melling he was breaking with a soft/medium speed the whole time. And he still ran a whole lot of racks in that match. I couldn't figure out why he was doing this because in his previous match on the TV table where he ran 5 racks in a row he was breaking extremely hard and successfully.

Shane is sponsored by, and plays with a Cuetec R360, (like mine:wink:).

Same thing I do. I break with it as well as shoot with it. I do not really like the feel of a break cue. Prefer to break with what I shoot with as well. Cuetec is a bad word around here, even though I admit using the R360. :)

A funny little story... I was watching Shane warm up in the practice room (Thursday I believe), practicing his break. Then Earl walks in and Shane immediately says "You gotta watch this!". He was all smiles.

Earl asks if he's using the cut break and Shane says no. He breaks once, and it was a bad break, so he re-racks. He slams it the 2nd time head on, the cue ball comes back a foot or two and then gains it's top spin traction and rolls to the middle of the table. The wing ball went straight in. Earl says "yeah, yeah, yeah, about two racks into your next match you'll go right back to the cut break like everyone else." Shane says "No way! You'll see!"

Shane sets up another rack, whereby Earl walks up, inspects the rack and says "You're cheating!". He was just busting his balls in good hearted banner.

I thought it was a funny exchange and IMO Shane thought he had just found magic in the bottle and was excited. It was a hint of what was to come!

Shane's breaking

I watched Shane for hours one night and he was breaking amazingly playing 9 ball. After winning many games they switched to racking with the 9 ball on the spot. It only took Shane about 5 racks to figure out the speed and spot to master the new position. Rory turned and said I don't have a chance if he figures out the break. The only weight that would help is if he gave Rory the break.

Watched Shane play for years. Before cuetec he broke and played with one cue. After being sponsored he started using a break cue. This man breaks are top notch. I've been watching him play for the last three or so years.
