SVB getting upset

Ok so its not a pretty site. SVB is angry and on tilt. Hes banging balls and his cue around. I know there is a thread that will be started about this and Id like to voice my opinion off the hop.
Its all players that get into this mode. We thought SVB was immune to it. Then fans get uncomfortable and threaten not to watch. promoters come on and feel like they have something to apologize for when no one can stop it.
The reality is that if we dont accept this behavior, we wont have any pool to watch. It looks like its just the way it is and people will always watch these matches. I hope Shane doesnt get reprimanded for this. We arent in his shoes.

For those of us that can't watch, can you grade the level of behavior? Here is a list of comparisons, rated from mid-range unprofessionalism to out of control drama queen:

Hennessey
Hatch
Dechaine
Mika
Earl

Shane was noticably upset at the US Open 10-ball after being beaten easily by Busty, banging balls around the TV table once the match was over. At Derby City, Busty beat him in 10-ball quite easily.

If he's a bit wound up, that's OK. He has high standards for himself and probably can't wait for another shot at Busty. After falling to Archer at the US Open 10-ball, there's little danger that Shane will have his guard down. For this reason, I think he'll find his top form against Archer, and I don't expect this TAR match to make it to the third race.

Shane has generally carried himself with total professionalism. For that reason, he gets a free pass here.

Super angry, kinda like Earl-ish.
He was down 19-13 at one point and now its tied. He was playing angry for about 3 hours. Hes calmed now a bit.

Me personally, I do not really care if they show emotion as long as it does not get out of hand. However, the holiest of hollies on here take offence to anything and expect people to be perfect in their own world.

Sometimes you have to let that excess stress out. He will be fine at the end.

I just watched the whole match, and honestly, I wouldn't even remotely compare him to any of these guys.

Yes, he was obviously mad at himself, and yes he whacked his cue a few times, but at no time was he ever disrespectful to Johnny or with the crowd.

Both guys were class acts and it was an awesome match!

Wasn't a big deal, doesn't turn off most viewers, and I'm skeptical of the ones who claim it does. I bet they sign up for the next TAR.

There are a lot of ways to take out anger and what separates shane from the bad sports others mention... is he's 100% mad at himself, or just at 'the pool gods'. He doesn't act mad towards the opponent.

Some guys will start crying at the other guy, saying stuff like "wow, you hit that terrible and get rewarded with ball in hand. I hit the other ball perfect and lose the rack". Or they'll talk about the other guy to the crowd..."you believe that shit? You think he kicked it like that on purpose?"

All shane does is add a few new dings to his cuetech. Never a bad word about johnny or in johnny's general direction. Doesn't blame others for his screwups. If you're gonna lose some control, that's a good way to do it.

That said, there's no reason to calmly run out the rest of the rack when you have an opportunity, hit 6 balls in a row perfectly, then toss your stick on the table and start slamming balls while you go to rack. It's just baffling. Right after you start to play decently is the time to get your head straight and get a little momentum, let your opponent know you're not fazed... don't sink yourself with ongoing negativity.

Shane was doing that to some extent with his match with Earl in the TAR studio. When he was losing in the 10 ft table match with Earl, he expressed his frustration differently by just slumping in his chair, whereas with Earl in the TAR match, he started physically expressing his frustration.

I noticed in the TAR podcast on Thursday, he seemed a bit distant staring off into space like he was preoccupied with something. He also said he he had taken a break from pool lately and that he was unhappy with his break.

I also read in Jay's thread that he went on a date while at Jays. What happens if Shane falls in love? hehe, we all know what happens to a guy when he gets involved with a woman:D

I'm not able to watch the match with Johnny, so I can't remark on his actions tonight, but I'm thinking he has something going on in his life right now, which is causing him to act out a bit. We all know the incredible high standard he sets for himself, he believes he should win every tournament and when he doesn't play to his standard, he is starting to act out.

If he is preoccupied with something, or something is bothering him, him not playing well is going to make him pretty upset. Plus he really believes that he should be beating Johnny, so with him being behind most, or all of the night, that has to trouble him greatly.

As with any great athlete, the tremendous pressure that they feel to perform to the high standards that the public expects of them and that they expect of them, can be overwhelming and something most of us cannot even begin to understand. One has to learn how to deal with all of that and he's still young and learning I'm sure.

I just hope he can control his emotions and use them to his advantage. It would be sad to see him take the easy road and just act out on them thru banging sticks, throwing balls, *****ing and moaning and the other things a lot of us do ourselves. We can do them and only a few people see them, but when a person of his stature does them, the are magnified and quite possible seen by hundreds if not thousands of people. Most of us will never know what it feels like to be playing with all of the pressure to win by their fans and themselves, and to have a camera trained on us while we're battling those emotions. Having it shown live to a audience and to have fans discuss it instantly on the Internet.

I have the greatest respect for Shane, for everything he has done in his life. I am impressed by how he has handled everything up to this point and not succumbed to the vices and pitfalls that so many of us do. He doesn't do drugs, doesn't get drunk, and handles himself professionally, so he has a lot of things going right for him. Everyone slips now and then and I hope he catches himself before it becomes a habit. He has to learn how to channel his emotions and use them to his benefit. Everyone needs to release frustration and steam, we all do it differently. It's healthy to get rid of it. At the same time, there's right ways and wrong ways to do it, and this slamming sticks on the table, slamming balls, pissing and moaning is not a good way to go. That's going to cause a lot more grief which adds to everything else.

He's set the bar so high for himself, that it's got to be very difficult to live up to. That can be good and that can be bad too. I don't want him to turn into a guy that's happy when he's winning, but turns into a angry spoiled brat when he's not. We have enough of those people:smile:

I think the close confines of the TAR studio brings out emotions a little easier then other locations. It's one thing to be in a huge tournament room with 100 other players playing in close proximity to you, where the attention is not all focused on you, but spread out amongst many other people. Even when you get to the finals and all eyes are on you, the room is so huge. In the TAR studio, you have a bunch of people in a small room so that it feels like your playing among 20 people, not a huge room with hundreds watching you. I know my actions would be different off in a corner in the pool room, as opposed to having hundreds of people watching me in a arena.

We're all wired differently and we all let off steam differently. I just don't like that lately we're seeing the norm of players acting out with all the slamming of sticks on the table and such. That's going to turn off everyone except the people that like to see people implode.

Best of luck to you Shane in everything in your life, not just pool.

Big Shane fan here. I remember him banging his stick on the table and even spiking the cue ball on the table when Alex P came back on him.

At some point Jason has got to say I'm not going to pay you guys to bang up my table.

I have seen Shane very pissed off at himself, he very rarely if ever gets upset at people around him or his opponet or even the conditions. But I have seen him miss a shot several times in a row just practicing (at one of his friends pool hall) and finally grabbed the ball and with some pretty good force threw the ball hard enough on the table to make it bounce off and onto the next table. It was hard enough and loud enough that the owner heard it from across the room (with music going) and came over to see what was going on. Nobody is immune from emotions. Some people, like Shane, have the ability to use that emotion to bring their game out and play better. If he was down 19 to 13 and brought it back to tied he obviously did that.
