Longmont, Colo., May 17, 2024 – The Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame will welcome a generational talent, a league and tournament promotor, and a leader in billiard media to the Hall of Fame class of 2024. The United States Billiard Media Association today announced that South Dakota’s “SVB” Shane Van Boening, amateur league owner and professional tournament promoter Mark Griffin, and Billiards Digest publisher Mike Panozzo have earned induction into the sport’s most prestigious club.

Van Boening, 40, in his first year of eligibility, was the overwhelming leader in the voting, named on 96% of the voting ballots. He will enter the Greatest Players wing of the BCA Hall of Fame, while the late Mark Griffin and Mike Panozzo, 60, will be honored in the Meritorious Service category. The BCA and the USBMA will induct them on Friday, Nov. 29, at the Caribe Royale Resort in Orlando in Conjunction with the Mosconi Cup.

Born July 14, 1983, to a pool-playing family in Rapid City, South Dakota, Shane Van Boening began playing pool as a young child and quickly became one of the country’s best bar table players, winning numerous national amateur titles. Venturing into the professional arena in the early 2000s, the “South Dakota Kid” immediately established himself as a top-tier player. Since then, he has won virtually every significant title in the game, including a WPA World 9-Ball Championship, a WPA World 8-Ball Championship, and five (5) U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship titles. He is considered to be the greatest American player of his generation and arguably one of the top five players in the world over the last 15 years.

“Being inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame is the coolest thing ever,” Van Boening said about his election. “You think about how many years you’ve played pool and everything that it took to get to the top. It means you’ve won a lot of tournaments and championships. There are so many great players in the Hall of Fame, and now I get to be alongside them. It means a lot.”

Mark Griffin’s passion was always working to support and grow the billiard industry. Griffin had been a player, certified instructor, premier table mechanic, pool room owner, member of the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) Board of Directors, league and tournament promotor, table manufacturer, sponsor, investor, mentor, and innovator. A double-lung transplant recipient in 2015, Griffin passed away in 2023 at 76 years old, after a battle with brain cancer.

Among his many billiard-related activities, Griffin had acquired the Billiard Congress of America’s amateur pool league in 2004 and created CueSports International (CSI) as its parent company. Through CSI, Griffin had also created and sustained several premier tournaments including the US Open 10-Ball Championship, US Open 8-Ball Championship, US Open One Pocket Championship, and US Open Straight Pool Championship among many others. In 2018, Griffin sold CSI to Ozzy Reynolds, who had previously been CSI’s general manager.

“Mark definitely left the sport better than he found it,” shared Reynolds. “His contributions will continue to be felt for generations to come. I cannot think of a more deserving person for this honor.”

Mike Panozzo devoted his entire professional career to billiards media. Billiards Digest publisher, Luby Publishing, hired Panozzo, a journalism major at Marquette University, directly out of college in 1980 to be the editor for the company and eventually he rose to became the publisher of Billiards Digest in 1994.

Panozzo served on the BCA Board of Directors from 1991-1992 and from 1998-1999 and has served extensively on its Promotions Committee in addition to chairing its Hall of Fame Committee. He served as a board member of the Billiard and Bowling Institute of America (BBIA) and was its president in 2001. He was honored with the BCA President’s Award in 2005 and received the BBIA Industry Service Award in 2017.

“I’m shocked...it’s a very strange feeling, to be honest.,” Panozzo said when informed of his selection. “Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about the significance and importance of the BCA Hall of Fame. I can honestly say that in 44 years in this industry, I never ever thought about being in the Hall of Fame. I’m beyond humbled that people in this business, for whom I have a great amount of respect, considered me worthy of being included!”

It makes sense that no other player should have to share the spotlight with an SVB first-ballot election.

I had been lobbying behind the scenes for Panozzo to anyone I knew on the voting committee. I was surprised he made it on in 2024. I thought Mark Griffin was going to be so obvious of a choice that we'd have to wait until 2026 for Panozzo. And there was the struggle of Panozzo chairing that committee it sounded like his humility often led him to try to tamp down any suggestions of him being on the ballot. He'd repeat the old Groucho Marx quote about refusing to be part of any group that would have him as a member. Or he'd more seriously say he felt the HoF was run by the billiards media so he was concerned having the billiards media elect one of its own was too self-congratulatory. But I always felt that should be true to such a degree that it would take exactly someone like Panozzo to be worthy of being the exception to that rule, e.g. an entire lifetime career in service to billiards.

Congrats to all these deserving inductees. Bravo!

From my vantage point, Ga Young Kim is almost as obvious for induction as SVB, but I like the fact that they'll go in separately.

Wonder whether this means Mike won't be the emcee during the Hall of Fame banquet.

I wonder what next year might be...

Be interesting to see if GYK goes with him or shortly after. I agree she's overdue.

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of having a physical Hall of Fame people could visit with plaques, memorabilia, etc. If done well, I think people would like to visit
Well, yes. The BCA used to have a little area at previous locations. Mark Griffin talked about setting one up in Las Vegas.

I think it would take an endowment of a few million dollars. You would need one full-time staff person and rent. No one is raising their hand to establish that endowment.

I doubt that it would have more than a dozen visitors per week. Trying to support it with admissions would not work.

I understand- it wouldn’t be practical, but it’s not in principle

Bravo to all three. Shane getting in was no doubt, but man I remember TAR 1! What a ride it’s been for him.

I still have those old TAR matches floating around. I’ll have to rewatch them. They had Billy and Grady in the booth for a real throwback in TAR 1.

I hope Shane's whole family can be there in Orlando. That will be lovely for all of them. I'd love to see this celebration pump up SVB to win the Mosconi Cup with his Team USA. It will be beautiful, win or lose, to see him shine that week. We met Shane in the early aughts when he was a pup, his first U.S. Open experience. The put him on the live stream table against Keith McCready. The bookmakers had Keith a two-game dog. Meanwhile, we never heard of Shane Van Boening from South Dakota, but the bookmakers must have known something we didn't. Keith did managed to squeak out a win on the live stream table, but I could see young Shane was nervous. Well, he sure has come a long way, hasn't he?

I took this photo that year at the Open in 2003. If you look closely, you can see Shane used to have cute little curls in his hair.

I am so pleased to see Mike Panozzo get elected. He travels around the world and bring the latest news to the masses, and he's a smart cookie when it comes to pool. What I like about him the most is how he's able to get his point across when that point may not be flattering, but he does so without ruffling feathers. He is a true ambassador of pool in more ways than one. Another thing about Mike which I never told anyone is his voice is exactly the same as my Uncle Chester, even the same giggle. It's uncanny. Every time he speaks., I think of my dear Uncle Chester who passed away many years ago.

Mark Griffin has covered pool tournaments, and sometimes when monies weren't paid as promised, Griffin came to the rescue. He's also offered to back aspiring pros, and of course, his pool room in Vegas is a huge success, created after many years of being in the pool room business, starting in Alaska. Unbeknownst to all, Griffin contacted me privately one time and offered to fund a pool-related project I was working on. I will never forget his generosity. Good man!

Nice to see three Americans get in this year. USA, USA, USA, all the way!

The years of service are recognized for SVB, Griffin and Mike P. All are great examples of how to lead and be successful in the industry differently. SVB the world champion, Griffin a organizer and Mike the writer.

To promote future award winners I propose:

SJM for Railbird Hall of Fame

Promoting being a fan is just as important. SJM is the fan that shows up to events.

Railbird awards make it easy to know who to approach, to start friendly introductions. SJM is one of those fans.

Another award would be who is the best camera operator or commentator for live billiard matches? The adoption of social media in billiards has been a huge success. Teaching others to use it effectively can keep the momentum going.

(DO NOT APPROACH ME in real life.)
