SVB to Kick Off High Run Attempts

Well, they OK'd JS' run for starters.

So I'd say whatever was good for him, in terms of table specs, is good as a start. Beyond that, I have heard of no squawks about racking templates in other pool disciplines, so why not 14.1?

From the rules:

... When ball rack template is used at 14.1 the outline of a triangle will still be drawn for the purpose of deciding whether a ball is in the rack area.. ...

That's actually the point. I could fab up my own rack with a thickness of <1/8". Techincally perfectly acceptable, but well less of the vast majority of break shots that may otherwise be questionable.

So, again... why bother
The outline (around a normal rack) helps me plan the break shot. It also guarantees that any non-interfering ball is playable. If you don't intend to compete at the game, the outline is not important.

One thing I've noticed is Shane likes to keep balls on the rail until the end. It works for him, but I always thought it was better to take care of this as early as possible?

Do you mean a line around the inside of the rack outlining the balls themselves? I'd like it that way.

Then there's the question of the bottom line/gap.

He is super good at nipping/spinning the cue back just right off the rail to get it back to the middle of the table. I noticed this in the 14.1 tourney as well from other players.

Current link - he appears to be on rack 20 of a run and close to beating his 308 mark:

Ugh. Hit the break well but got kicked up table. Missed a long shot to end at 295.

Ouch... shooting ball 296 he left himself a long but very makeable shot and badly overcut it. He doesn't look happy.

No. I mean the line around the outside of the rack just like it's been for over 100 years. A line around the inside of the triangle (the tangent of the object balls in the rack), would result in unplayable break balls.

Let's assume racking templates are deemed ok in 14.1. We still have the question of when to send the 15th ball to the head spot. Do we want an "interference" area around the balls, or just the balls? From a practical viewpoint, wouldn't it have to be just the balls?

But I still say this is for the future, after rules are reviewed and possibly changed. Today, we need "an outline of the rack" around the balls.

Did JS have an outline?

damn, heartbreaker
That is basically what this kind of effort is about. If he does this until he runs 800 (his ultimate goal), he is going to miss seven or eight times past 600 before he gets to 800. (On average, of course.) He's going to have about four 300s for each 400 he gets.

He seems to have a much more controlled break shot now. I think he still needs to work on reducing the difficulty of his during-the-rack shots. 99% is not good enough. He needs 99.5%+ on his average shots.

A friend of mine took a Magic Rack to the office, scanned it, and printed up 100 copies on overhead projector film. Lined them up in bunches and used a hole punch.
