swivel vise

If you want a real 8" Kurt with swivel you are going to be in the $700 or more range.

Bridgeports commonly have 6" vises, not 8". You can get a Kurt 6" for 375, and the swivel base will probably be about 150 more.

These are new prices.

From the metalworking catalogs, I think Enco has the cheapest prices. Definelty cheaper than MSC for most things.

If you want to go the import route, you can probably get what you want from ebay for 150 total.

You can also check ebay for used Kurt vises. Not much to really go bad on them or wear, except for the jaws. But you can replace them or just live with any machining "mistakes" they may have on them.

I bought one of the Enco brand swivel vises that are made similar to Kurt and have been happy with it for about 1/3rd the price of a Kurt.

I've got the same as you except I picked it up from MSC as I could pick it up at their store saving a 100.00 or so in shipping. Mine is probably not quite as precise as a Kurt but for the price difference, who can complain.. The top, vice part of mine is not perfectly level with the base but the .001 or 2 off that it is could be rather easily corrected but for what I use it for it's really not worth the time it would take. I know they're sure heavy suckers.

I have a 4" clone from Shars. A few days after it arrived I was swivelling the thing on its base and it just did not look right  Upon closer inspection they had stamped "90" on the 80 degree (100 degree ?) line
It also lifts the work off the parallels a bit, so after I win the lottery a real Kurt will be ordered ... until then I have a sufficiently large rubber mallet :thumbup2:

> I don't know about the swivel type, but the school I went to bought a Parlec (Kurt D675 copy) after I caught them on sale for 279.00 in a MSC/J+L sale catalog. What they got might as well have BEEN a Kurt, just had different branding on it. It came with a set of the blocks on the bottom that make it a snug fit in the t-slots (almost no work to indicate),and a set of jaws I swear were made for a Kurt, with the slot across the back jaw for the set-screw stop, that we also got 2 of.

Almost no difference in quality or performance, and 150.00 cheaper than the Kurt,a no-brainer. I liked it so well I almost took it with me when I graduated. Tommy D.

Thanks everybody for the information. I might just try and add a swivel base to the 6" Kurt on the Bridgeport.

Do you think a import swivel base will fit the 6" Kurt? It would be a lot more affordable way to get the setup I am looking to put together.
