Synthetic tip?

I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this in or not, but here goes...

My wife and I have been vegan for the last 4 years. I need to have a couple new tips put on, but I don't want to use cow or pig skin (or buffalo, or any other kind of animal).

Can someone suggest to me a good synthetic tip? I played with LePros up until going vegan, so I'd like something of similar hardness.

Thanks!

Other than the very hard breaking tips (Bunjee, Phenolic) I don't know of any tips that are not made from animal skins.

You could always experiment with some different types of "rubberized" synthetics. I believe there was something similar to this marketed at one time. Haven't seen or heard of it in awhile so I doubt it was very successful.... but who knows.

Please don't take this the wrong way. I'm not trying to knock your choices. This is just something I have always wondered.

What about all of the animals who lost their homes to the harvesting of the exotic woods used in your cue?

As for tips, I don't know of any that aren't made from some sort of leather. Possibly those cheap ones you buy at Sears or Sporting Goods stores. I'm sure they hit like crap, but they might satisfy your needs.

There should be all kinds of materials that you can try. Tacky rubber products will allow you to produce TONS of spin (too much for normal play, but great for trick shots) and may not be legal in local tournaments/leagues. I happen to have a 1/4" cork hot pad in front of me, and wonder if cork would work . . . Probably a softer hit than you're currently used to, and you may have to sand the shape rather than cut it. Heck, give it a try.
Good luck.

Well, my newest cue was made in 1993, way back before I went vegan and before my views were such as they are. I still play with it because I think it's wasteful to get rid of it (plus it hits great). If I'm ever in the market for a new cue, I'll have to consider my options, I guess, but as long as this one still hits like it does, no need to worry about that.

So, nobody makes any decent synthetic tips, huh? I wonder if there just isn't a market or if there is some other reason they don't make them. Seems to me that since you can control the makeup of synthetic materials, it would be ideal because you could customize the properties to suit your needs.

Hmm... maybe I'll have to learn to work with synthetic leather and start making them myself?

I'm sure my wife will love it when I propose that to her....

Mueller carries a tip made by Joe Porper named RAM. It comes in soft, medium & hard. It is a synthetic. A package of 3 is $2.85...JER

Thanks! I just got a Mueller catalog today. I looked through it and saw that those didn't have the materials listed, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks!

I have experience with these. Not bad if you know what you are getting. They a pain to work with but once on, never need grooming. They were originally desined for bar cues but I see no reason why they would not work for a player. If you played with a LePro, go with the hard tip. PM if you need anything.

The tips you are looking for were made in the 90's, Called future tips if you want to search for them. Back then the BCA shot them down because they were not leather but there were different hardnesses available.

Will do. Thanks.

Big fan of your cues, by the way. A local guy had one and it hit great.

Well, using that rational, just find an old box of Lepros that were made in 93 or earlier. Someone here should have some old stock.

I do and if you want them, I'll send you a bunch. I never use them.

You are looking for RAM Tips by Joe Porper's Creative Inventions

As far as playability, I have not heard anything good about them. They basically just don't satisfy the needs of the game.

Other than Phenolics, not good for playing - just jumps and breaks, that all there is out there.

I have a "Peter Ernst" tip on one of my cues and it actually plays quite decent.
It's very hard, but still playable. With a dime radius, you can produce as much spin as you like. With a nickel radius, it's more of a J/B tip (IMHO). It holds chalk extremely well and does not mushroom at all. I considered using it for my main player, but it was just a little bit too hard for me. But there are some players who use it. And they don't use it, because they're vegan.
Might be the tip for you

1 tip is about 10$
Unlike leather tips, one tip should last for many years.

This thread shows my ignorance once again. I had no idea that there was a tip.. Synthetic tip other than phenolics. Good thread. Thanks...

It doesn't work that way for me. I already have my cues, so I'm not contributing to any further animal abuse by owning them. If I buy something animal based, I'm assuming that that item will be replaced by a new item coming from an animal, and I don't want to contribute to that.

Oh, by the way, I'm not trying to get anyone else to think like I do. Just explaining my reasoning behind my choices...
