Table saw shaft tapering machines

Hey guys,

I am in the process of building a table saw shaft tapering machine for myself. I am curious to know if anyone else would possibly be interested in buying such a machine if there was one available to buy ?

I can not find where anyone has ever built a table saw tapering machine to be sold commercially, so I am just trying to get a feel if there is a demand for such a beast.

Also, if anyone has a need for a custom jig or fixture of any kind let me know, I have a full service job shop in Roscoe, IL with the capability of building pretty much anything you can dream up. Although we are semi new to the pool cue industry, we have been in the machining business for 20+ years. We will be rolling out several different things to the pool cue industry in the coming months. I don't want to let any cats out of the bag at this point, but I am very excited to know what is in the works, and I think a lot of you guys will be pleasantly surprised with our offerings as well.

My family coming originally from the UP and still having family in the Lumber Mill business in the UP, quality shaft wood will be another thing that we will be offering very soon! I know there are a lot of sources out there for shaft wood, some may be higher quality that others. Our shaft wood will be EXTREMELY good quality wood as we start out with some of the best quality logs available anywhere. Shaft wood is coming in the next couple weeks, we are bringing in multiple pallets to start out with, so there will be a few different grades of material available. All of which will be very high quality we are grading for straightness of grain, ring count, and color.

Let me know if there is anything we can help you out with. Feel free to give me a call or an email anytime. We also deal in used machinery, I will posting some of these as they come in too. Right now, I have 4 full size milling machines. 2 bridgeports, 2 supermax mills. and a 15x50 American Machine Tool lathe, all of which are for sale. As well as a Rutland Mini Mill. Its a Rong Fu RF-30 based machine, just like any of the other mills on the market offered by jet, grizzly, or whoever else is selling them under their own name.

Thanks,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,
A few saw machines have been offered in the market.

Tom Datum also made a manual one with multiple bars.

Oh yeah ? A couple other people have mentioned that there are other guys offering table saw tapering machines but I have not been able to find any info on them at all.
Do you know where I can find info on these ?

Geoff,

I own two shaft machines, one for shafts and one for butts. The most important design feature you can engineer is to incorporate the use DC motors with controllers.

Having vernier control over your travel and lathe velocities is a must if you want to achieve optimum RMS finishes. I dial in speeds for hogging, intermediate and finish cuts.

As the shaft diameter gets smaller the travel and lathe must be slowed way down to see tapers that need very little sanding.

I researched dc motor company's for days before I matched the right ones. Darrin Hill built my machines and I assisted him in his shop. The motors on our machines can run all day long and they barely get warm.

Good luck,

Rick Geschrey

Note the small size of the DC Motors - 2 per machine

Saw fixture

I have been using one of Bludworths CNC saw fixtures for several years now. Have made alot of saw dust with it. Just got a new machine and haven't decided if i am going to keep the old one or not. It does a real good job, thats why I might keep it around.
The saw fixtures do a good job cutting shafts and butts, very little sanding keeps your sizes correct. I cut everything .001 oversize to alow for the little bit a sanding that is needed.

I agree. I use DC with control to power almost every machine I have, even routers. It's essential for tuning optimum drive:feed:cutter speeds for the cleanest cut.
