Table Setup

Thanks, any other tips I should look for in table mechanic, do they all use the same tools and supplies ( wax, leg levels, etc ).

I have a GC3 in my basement which was re-clothed 3 times. I was unhappy the first two times after 6 months I noticed the slates shifted slightly as a ball rolled across them. Even on a solid concrete floor.

The last time however the mechanic used the playing card and superglue trick between slates, it's been almost 2 yrs. No problems. I suggest this or a similar method to secure slate seams. FWIW.

Randy Smith is an excellent table mechanic and has been an excellent player in this area and others for many years. Im not sure what Glens problem is, other than extreme arrogance, but I assure you Randy will show up on time and your table will be set up correctly, for the agreed upon price.
Maybe thats Glens problem with other mechanics.... They know how to set up tables AND act professionally, where as setting up a table is his only skill.

Chuck, its real simple buddy....just post up some pictures of Randy's work....that all;)

Chuck, you clearly have no idea what my skills are as a REAL pool table mechanic, and the fact that I work hard to do the best I can in this trade, while others who just do it to make some extra money....are called table mechanics as well, its degrading at the least! Further more, I feel that if anyone is going to brag about someone's skills at working on pool tables to others in an effort to make that same person some money, YOU should at the least, KNOW something about what you're talking about...this isn't the NPR forums!!

Randy Smith working out of The Billiard Shop on TV highway is a master mechanic and does most of the players tables from portland to Seattle

I'm just curious, what skills are needed to be called a "master mechanic"? Because installing cloth, cushions, and leveling slates in my book, is called installer skills, and is the most basic skill level there is in this industry, and yet so basic that 98% of the installers in this country can't get it right;)

When I told Randy of your first statement Glen he took the high road. I believe sir you know nothing of Randy Smith of Oregon work. In deference to Randy that's all I will say about you sir :)

Also, try Gordon Graham 425-275-8255 both Rich and Gordon have come behind all the recommended table mechanics already mentioned and fixed their work right.

Scott Frost likes Randy Smith's work

Glen,

A "master mechanic" might be the label one would apply to someone setting up a table that Scott Frost was just raving about on Facebook yesterday. Below is what arguably the best one-pocket player in the world had to say about this table that Randy set up at Paradise Billiards in Washington.

Scott Frost would rave about any table being great to play on as long as he was winning! As far as all those names, Dan Louie, Harry Plattis, Mike Zimmerman, Hobbs....I've played against most all of them, and Randy don't do the work on any of their pool tables, and Scott Frost don't know the first thing about working on a pool table, if he did he wouldn't be so dam cheap about maintaining the Diamond table loaned to him in AZ to play on, bt he don't care if he can trap players on a Red Label 9ft ProAm that plays like a pin ball machine, at Colbys. If you really want to back up Randys work, post up some pictures of it that all might just want to see....for themselves!!!

Glen

In point of fact, Randy has worked on Dan Louie's personal table. I'm not going to respond to the rest because you are just ranting and raving and you clearly are the master of everything pool, in your own mind. Good luck ruling the Universe.

It seems Glen you have been exposed ....again! Next time you get so full of yourself you think you want to malign a regional table mechanic, you might want to actually talk to pool players in the area. From Portland metro to Seattle Randy is a well respected and respectful artisan. You wont find a single player that would say anything bad about Randys work. On the contrary ,players rave about his work. Which apparently you are unaware of? Glen why would they call Randy from Portland to close up pockets, cover, and do the full setup on the big action tables in Seattle if there were so many superior mechanics between here and there?

Scott says it all from his facebook post Scott Frost Ya Fast Lenny this main gambling table here plays like table 6 before when it was a gold crown at KCP. But this has blue cloth and rolls dead strait

What big action room are you referring to, Malarkey s in Tacoma, or the Golden Fleece in Seattle, because those are the main action rooms, and he don't do any of the work on them. Just post up some pictures of his work if you so swear by it, you shouldn't have a problem doing that....should you, I mean he's worked on all the players tables according to you....your words right?...show some work, prove what you're saying, as in back it up man!!

Quit sucking on your thumb 00John, reaching a little deep I see trying to bring up a thread that has nothing to do with you....LOL if you want to see what level of work I really can do, go to my facebook page, Glen Hancock....THAT'S the level of work that shouts out "MASTER TABLE MECHANIC" in which I am the ONLY PERSON in this country, or world for that matter doing work on that level, so just find them pictures of Randys work...and post up if you have the balls.

Glen

So, from the replies in this thread it looks like you got 3 choices that are mechanics that are recommended by other's. Doesn't seem like much for a metropolitan area of Portland Oregon. I tried by looking on my Angie's List and none were listed on there. Would the higher class billiards bar's be somewhere he could ask who they recommend, since they usually have several tables that have to be setup from time to time.

Otter Boy, if you wan't to see examples of Randy's work close to you, you can go to Club Underground, the largest Diamond table room on the west side, or he just did the tables at Big Al's in Progress Ridge today.
