tableless drills

I have a couple of drills that I do alone or driving down the highway.

First off, the "bottle drill" is the worst drill I have ever seen for stroke practice. It invokes muscles that are not supposed to be used in the normal pendulum stroke. Stay away.

How about working on two of your pre-shot routines.
1. Stand over the kitchen table and then practice stepping into the shot. Get your bridge hand in place and then
2. execute your shooting routine. Do that about ten times. Make sure you write down each step.

When driving I like to practice my stroke. I just make a " military salute" to my chest area. Once again about ten times in a row. Slow motion really helps.

I disagree with randy on the bottle drill. I have set up a can instead of a bottle on a kitchen table. Make sure the tip only enters the mouth of the bottle, no further than that. Get in your stance an smoothly stroke for three minutes straight! This works on several things.

1st you are ensuring your stroke is straight
2nd you can notice what your wrist is doing
3rd you can also adjust your stance, you will notice how quickly your lower body fatigues if you have a poor stance
4th you really work those muscles in your arm that you use to stroke, your arm will be on fire after about a minute.

Trust me, the bottle drill is helpful in several ways if you use it properly and are aware of what your doing.

I agree that the bottle drill is of little use. If you want to see if your stroke is straight, you can try to stroke along the line where many tables can be pulled apart to make them smaller or larger. Or, you can put a little sticker or paper donut on the table and see if you can regularly get your tip to the same spot with every stroke.

When I'm not at a pool table, I'm usually working on my mental game. Practice developing your ability to focus on one thing for 10 to 15 seconds. Mentally go through your routines and checklists. Build up your mental routines...they are just as important as any part of your game.

Well a can has a very wide opening. Must be the can drill. If you are just using your Triceps & Biceps your arm should never "be on fire"....:-)

I disagree randy. I am in the army. For PT every morning we do a certain exercise where you literally do a continues movement using the tricep with no resistance. After about 100 reps, its on fire!!!!! Trust me. Anyways your arm will fatigue after about a minute of continues stroking. Doing the pendalum back and forth never stopping for 3 minutes will condition the tricep and bicep like you wouldn't believe. If its not on fire, then you must be sitting on the couch watching TV.

God Bless You. Thanks for defending our country and my ass. Happy Holidays....randyg

No problem Randy. Its nice to be able to express our opinions without attacking one another like so many do in the main forum.

Nothing wrong with a difference in opinion.

When I'm offshore, I take a piece of stainless tubing and just work mother drill #1 except I have no ball. I just focus on completing my stroke, and my PEP also.

The only problem with the bottle drill is that you have to drop your elbow to complete your stroke, I'd rather just work it out w/o the bottle.

Speaking of your arm burning, your not going to get a better stroke workout than using S.S. tubing lol, everyone looks at me crazy out here but it keeps me sharp.

I think you could probably add your Rhythm to this drill.

Evan...As I showed you, the only time your cue is level, is at contact with the CB (which is SOOOOO brief). After contact you "finish" your stroke to your natural finish position (we measured yours). Your tip finishes on or near the cloth. That's why the "bottle drill" doesn't work well, to develop an accurate and repeatable process. As expressed by grey ghost, to do the bottle drill (even just entering the mouth of the bottle, you'd have to either: 1) drop your elbow (piston stroke), or 2) arbitrarily stop your stroke before you get to your finish position. IMO, you don't want to do either! That's not to say it cannot be done! Remember, it's more about YOUR process, than any particular way of doing things. We just teach a way that works well for most people...but it can be done lots of ways...everybody knows and can see that! Best of luck to you. Happy Holidays on your brand new Diamond!
