I'm going to look at this on Saturday.

What should I look for to see if it's in good shape ?

What should I offer the guy? Whats it worth ?

I know it's only a picture but that is all I have to go on at this point.

This one is too short and probably has a small through hole in the headstock. Look for 36"+ and close to 1.5" through the headstock.

On the other hand, it may work for ferrules and tips if you can steal it.
Look for wear on the ways where the carriage rides and excessive play in the dials and tailstock.

$750.00 if it looks brand new, $450 for average condition and run like hell if its roached.
He will be asking for more, lots more.

You really need to make friends with a good machinist for advice.

This is only one man's opinion and there are probably 200 guys here that know way more than me. Good luck.

Your questions have a great deal to do with intent.
In other words, what are you going to do with it?

I thought it might do some tips and ferruls , maybe clean a shaft.
If it didn't work out for that, I know of a auto restoration shop that is looking for somthing to replace their small JET that just died.

Hi,

Buy it cheap or don't buy it. Don't be afraid to offer a hundred bucks! The seller may just want it out of the garage.

My friend Darin Hill of Hill's Cue has bought many old school lathes over the years and has rebuild and revitalized them to look and run like new. He is a expert machinist and mechanic and I have seen the 100s of hours he has toiled over the years in sweat equity to make them pristine.

If you are looking for advise now and don't have any experience this could be a very demanding task to take on. Grinding bed ways, installing new bearings, chuck problems and many other jobs can need to be done to make that thing accurate and repeatable,

That lathe is good for tips and ferrules or making ring billets or cut offs if you attach live tooling to the tool post and install and indexer. You could also drill and tap shafts and cut the step for the joint collar and rings.

New China Lathes are not expensive and are more than accurate for cue making.

Good Luck

Was a beautiful little lathe but the seller wanted 1700 dollars . Way too much from what little I know. I did get a line on a Hardin sp? lathe that is 36" maybe better suited to cues? . The guy said his boss has 3 of them and and wants to get rid of 1. Suppose to be like brand new with all the toys as he put it.

I'll keep everyone posted.

If you can get a longbed hardinge lathe, you will never look back.

idk what your looking for but here is a link to a thread i put up a while back about my minilathe that i still have. it collects dust so i don't have a need for it. used it in a small poolhall i usta have. with rigging on a work bench i was able to do repairs on full length house cues. really served its purpose for me. I dont even play that much anymore so i dont need to change my own tip very often. I didnt repost it because of naysayers and nits they give you crappy feedback if your selling gold for doughnuts !
Plus it is hard to find someone who will pick it up here in Syracuse.
Berkshires are somewhere in the northeast i think. right?
anyway thats all. read all about it if you are interested pm me. tyvm
still want 250 with a few accessories included or i'll just keep it till someone comes along opens a room and needs it. like maybe the one thats going in Rome,NY soon. ok Bye

someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but is the 30" long enough? Thats cutting it kinda close isn't it?

30" is not long enough to get a shaft or butt between centers on that machine, the 40" will do it though. They do have a 36" lathe/mill combo that would work for the same price as the 40".

http://www.boltonhardware.com/categ.../12-x-36-gear-head-combo-lathe-mill-drill.php

Maybe someone who has tried the combo set-up could comment. From what I see, the X and Y travel are sufficient to do point work on this machine and there is enough distance between centers to handle butts or shafts.
