Tail stock offsetting

Hi guys

So I started dabbling into tapering using the offset tail stock method. It works beautifully but my practice dowels look like arrows. Very steep inclination. Is there a formula or a reference guide I could use to properly set the tail stock. I really dot want to destroy a blank until I have it right. One cue maker told me a while ago offsetting by 0.200 should give me the standard .840 joint 1 something butt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Now who wants my arrows!!!!!!!

Indicate the offset.
Take note of that number and the difference in diam after cutting end to end.
Shafts have more than one angle so an offset only gets you to make
cones.
Not tapered shafts.

.840 joint gets you 1.240 or close to, butt bottom diam. if everything works right at -.200 offset.

The offset isn't what will give you an .840" joint. The offset gives you the taper and you can cut it to anything you want. Like Joey said, a .200" offset will give you .840/1.240" but if you want a thicker or thinner handle, you can adjust it.

Find a cue that feels good in your hand. Measure the butt cap diameter and the joint diameter. Subtract the joint from the cap and divide by 2. That will give you your offset.

1.240"-.840"= .400"/ 2= .200"

Ryan to the rescue. Thanks man. I was really hoping some one would drop the formula on me. I know I can only do cones but that is fine with me as a starter. I play with a z2 so it's no big difference plus I can always modify the taper with sandpaper. I have build some cues but I actually did not sell any of them yet. I like them all to much.

Now once everything is set up do you guys use the bit to taper or a router? Would a dremmel tool be sufficient if I take small passes?

I am in the process of building my own Cnc 2 axis machine like Tod"s. for now offsetting the taper bar is ok but in the long run I don't know.

Joey, he wouldn't buy Chris's book as he mentioned not needing any Holy Books to built a cue in another thread in the Mach Forum.

He always figures out a way to offend someone in just about everyone of his threads.

As always Blue Hog has to bug in other people's threads and make smart ass comments.

Sadly blue hog you are not even close to the caliber, intelligence or pure curtesy that Joey showed me as well as other wonderful people here. They help web they can without any rude or unproductive comments unlike you.

You are in the minority buddy. Must be lonely down there.

By the way my 9th cue in 4 months will be dedicated to you. And it was done without the holy books, expensive equipment, all free info and good people .

You should read the thread where I thank the people that helped me but sadly you were not one of them.

Yes, it is very lonely at the bottom. Funny tho, you're the only one I have made snotty comments to.

Might chalk that one up to my excellent judge of character.

Many repairmen and builders have gotten their start from Chris's book and DVDs. Have to start somewhere.

By saying that you did it all without using a Holy Book, and the manner in which you said it, you made it sound like you were better than others that resorted to buying the media to get them started.

In Romania, you don't learn a trade, you steal one, remember.

I studied mine and only asked a few questions when I wanted clarification on a point. That and scouring the AZ Archives.

Yeah, I did read your thread and you did build some nice cues for very little, with very little, I'll give you that much. You should be proud.

As always, I commented on your attitude which to me, leaves considerable to be desired.

Pretty simple, I've never cared for your attitude and most likely never will.

I get along fine with everyone else in the world, you should feel privileged as being the one person that can rub me the wrong way.

Just as a matter of point, you want to see someone that has a great attitude and is building some great cues in a short matter of time, go have a look at Tank's threads.

Total world of difference.

I think some of the hostility towards you comes from you asking for everything and not spending any time learning and experimenting. You have stated in the past that it is easier to ask than it is to make the mistakes, which I suppose is true.

But here's the problem and my advice; you are not becoming a good cue maker because of it. Cue makers hone their craft by making the mistakes...lots of them. The lesson learned from one mistake is more valuable than asking ten questions on AZ. Don't just learn 'how,' learn 'why.' As an example, 9 cues in 4 months is not something to be proud of. Most cue makers takes many months to over a year to complete ONE cue. If you built 4 in the short amount of time that you have been dabbling, I will guarantee those cues are not up to par. You are running before you learned to walk.

Now, I know it sounds like I'm busting your balls but I'm trying to give you sound advice to make you better. Take it for what it's worth...

What Ryan said
IMO going from a question about what to use to cut tapers on an offset tailstock to a cnc is taking 52 jumps without a step....
