Tap eagle started last night and the Apa is THREATENED!! Lol

Sorry ..the title should say tap league. Darn auto correct lol

So after the episode of our local lo allowing a team in the league that was under age and couldn't play in the bars except for one and when that place closed still expected us to pay for matches that couldn't be played I got aggressive about starting a tap league. The tap operator in this area is the biggest in the country but hasn't been able to get into York due to the Apa lo threatening anyone who thought about giving It a try. There are enough angry teams now that don't give a crap and agreed to play! So last night was the first night and it went well but I heard from more then one player that they were told if they played tap they were no longer welcome to play in Apa ! Ridiculous I'm a manager at lowes and I couldn't imagine telling someone if they show at Home Depot don't come back here! Lol I highly doubt they will make good on that promise. Has this happened in anyone else area ?
I must say this is another situation of a bad lo not a bad league. Everyone liked playing in Apa but I could go on forever about how they were treated by the lo but that is why they are leaving...not the Apa itself.

Stick to your guns. Competition is healthy for everyone. If the APA players are threatened with bans that limit their choices then they will likely feel even more inclination to leave.

It is not surprising to me that the APA league operator is attempting to blacklist the players that also want to play in TAP - or any other league.

We have run into that all over the country.

I do believe it is the League Operators that have this attitude - but I also know the APA national office is aware of that type of behavior - yet they have not taken any action that I am aware of.

The APA has a lot of league operators that think they own the players.
I also think the players need to remember they are the customer.

I agree with the OP - show me any other business that takes this type of position. It is ridiculous, but I don't expect it to change anytime soon.

It is unfortunate because we should all be promoting the game.

I think it is mainly because APA LOs have to purchase a franchise. They make an investment and it's a full time business. Unfortunately it's not like McDonalds with the brand doing all the heavy lifting to get customers in the door, although the APA does do a lot of advertising.

So with a limited pool of dedicated players in an area they can't stand to have competition, especially from those who didn't have to put in the same level of financial investment.

Competition is healthy in any area of life. Your leagues and TAP both offer good alternatives to APA. In response the APA has been forced to create their masters division with no handicaps to try and retain the better players that they abused for so many years.

I know that if it's possible for me to be a part of your league system wherever we settle I would like to do that.

LO vindictiveness

I know a top player in my area is starting a TAP league and the local LO kicked him out of APA in his county and was carried over in my county (different LO). I can accept that as he's a direct competitor now. Anything against players is unacceptable.

that just goes to show you that not all lo's are the same. take my area.

my napa lo has played on my apa team that i was captain of and he was my co captain. he also plays apa masters.

i also play on a team with my apa lo and he is well aware of the fact that i play in 2 napa divisions also along with 3 apa divisions.

there are dozens of people in my area that play both leagues and neither lo has a problem with that.

not all lo's are money grubbing ass hats either. i play on 2 apa teams and 1 napa team and pay no weekly fees. i was asked to play on these particular teams by the lo's and they told me i did not have to pay weekly fees.

the 2 apa teams are bye fill teams where no one on the team has to pay. i dont really know the story about my napa team. i was asked by the napa lo to join his team and when i went to pay him he said i play for free...dont know why he told me that ...did not ask . :grin-square:

a couple of stories about my apa lo.

he started a ladies division. they only managed to get 4 teams. they only played 2 sessions before nationals. the 1st place team was under the assumption they were going to vegas.

it was never told they would go to vegas but they were never told they would not go due to only playing 2 sessions and only had 4 teams either.

there was a lil uproar when told they were not going but after the lo thought about it he decided to take the money out of his pocket and send them.

another story.

we had an 18 year old kid join our team. upon learning that my g/f and i was paying his weekly fees every week due to him not having a job the lo said he could play free as long as he was unemployed.

not too many lo's on any league would take the steps my lo does to look out for his players.

2 of the teams have left apa with me and joined tap ..here's there reasons

1) One team hasn't gotten there prizes from the league a few months. No shirts, trophies or cash. They've been blown off every time they ask. She finally filed a complaint with the st louis. She got a call from one of the operators yelling at her for starting shit as she put it and then kicked her team out of the league when she found out she also signed up for tap..This is a person that played multiple nights.

2) another is moving over because he has a child that played in a jr league. that bar closed up (the one that caused the problem for us to) But they did finish the league. That was 6 months a go. The kids haven't gotten there pizza party or trophies that were promised and when he spoke to the lo they have no plans to make good on it. His little girl LOVES pool.. I mean really loves the game and pretty damn good for a kid who I think is 11 or 12. This is a guy who with the rest of his family played in at least 4 leagues a week that they now lost.

These guys remind me of the saying people don't leave bad business they leave bad managers...

under those circumstances i would quit also.

Maryland APA

We have APA, TAP and GPPA all at Champion Billiards in Frederick, Maryland. The APA League Operator, Terry Justice, never gets involved with other leagues coming into Central Maryland and never tries any tactics to give them or players any problems. There are some good league operators and ours is one!

Bar owners and players in my area would tell that LO to go f**k himself for sure. As a matter of fact, we did. The previous owner had his franchise yanked, and had to pay all money owed to the players. The league lost half or more of its teams. The new operator is a stand up kind of guy, and the league is growing again. The problem was exacerbated because not enough people were filing official complaints. When the national office had enough evidence, the LO was ousted. He also owned a bar an lost it too. Had to sell to be able to pay up. The national office was taking him to court and I assume he wanted to avoid that.

If there is a serious problem in your league, it is not enough to just quit and bi*ch about it. You, as a team captain ( no one being singled out here) have to take action. And not just one captain....all of them. The national office does listen but most of the time cannot take action on just one complaint. Too many times its just a disgruntled captain. More then one will give them legs to stand on. You all have to work together to make the system work. My area proved it. The players do have the power as long as most of the league isn't full of lazy whiners.

Reminds me of a joke I heard once. How many APA players does it take to change a light bulb?

None! They would rather sit around in the dark and bi*ch about it!

Ditto. As a former APA LO I find that kind of behavior reprehensible. St. Louis should know about this guys modus operandi. The good APA LO's do not need to badmouth other leagues...let alone make idle threats.

Report the League Operator to the APA.

Nobody likes a turd, and that APA league operator sounds like a turd.

Frank...Don't know if you know this, but Terry has been the top APA LO for decades! He has sold off several parts of his original league, but he is still one of the "standard-bearing" LO's for the APA. Great guy, and terrific league operator!

fastone371...I just want you to know that the kind of behavior here is neither rampant, nor prevalent in most areas of the country. If it were, the APA would die. I personally don't believe that Corporate APA would tolerate their franchisees "threatening" poolplayers.

Apparently APA LOs think they are the mob. "If you play for them guys we cant give youse no protection"

No....they won't. But EVERYONE has to work together. In our case, they found clear evidence of fraud. They can't take action on just one complaint. After their investigation, the rep who oversees LO's came to the area and had two separate players meetings and explained exactly what was going on and how they were going to proceed. The reps name was Michelle. ....I think. Very nice person. The national office does care!

I couldn't agree more.. I told them all that. Every team i play complains about the lo. It's like we all go to the same restaurant , ***** about the food service and price the whole time and the at the end say Seya back here next week! lol Like I said finally people are starting to send complaints into the main office but by the sound of it I doubt much will happen. I don't think the apa has a problem with lo's threatening people who look at leaving for tap.

While it doesn't really matter to you now since you pulled out already, but I wouldn't count on the fact that they don't care. Legal action takes time and evidence. LO's cant be fired like a common employee. The more evidence they have, the less time it will take. Call and talk to the Director of League Operators in person. I have the direct number if you want it. Have it somewhere. But I can find it.

I get this ~ I am trying to start a GPPA Handicap League in Oregon and have heard the same stories. I heard that an LO in a Southern State who is also trying to start a GPPA League had tires slashed. What's up with the APA - are they that threatened?

GPPA just paid a Florida team 10K for a 16 week session ~ way more then the APA but I am having a hard time recruiting because players are being told they will be "kicked" out of the APA if they play in this league. How crazy is that? America was built on competition.

I wouldn't say a thing to the APA. Sounds like the guy is the best thing for the new TAP league.

I think it's just like any other business that has little competition in an area and then all of a sudden, guess what, new competition arrives. The threat is real to that LO's bottom line and does affect his or ability to live their life as they have or provide for his or her family. That being said, that's business and that's how or society works. So, yeah, you have to adapt and you have to find new and creative ways to keep your business going. It will cost you initially but you have to be able to see down the road and how that initial expense can benefit you. If you only look at NOW then you have a problem. Threatening folks or bashing them for going elsewhere is not a good formula in my opinion. Here's one, There's a new store here in my town that's brought a fresh concept to a certain market in which a few smaller stores have thrived until now. These smaller stores have been on a fairly even playing field up until now. This new store is a powerhouse and it's doing everything right so far....Will the smaller stores survive and find new ways to keep their business going, will the new store eventually show it's true colors or do we see them now? Who knows. I hope they all do well. So far I haven't heard any of them threatening the other so that's a start...Hopefully they can find a way to all compete and thrive in the market but I think it's the one or one's that keep on coming up with ways to bring the people through the door and most importantly, keep them coming back!!
