Taper Machine

I am saving up to buy a machine mainly dedicated to tapering shafts. What are your opinions on which way to go. I think I read on one of my searches that Chris Hightower has a taper machine. I don't know anything about it. How about the Taper Shaper? I want to stay away from the table saw units becuase my space is limited.

Thanks for the input.

Yes, I have one for $2900. It is too heavy and too accurate for letting UPS handle it with their ground service. I am shipping one next week and it cost $295 to crate and ship it by UPS freight. That is almost twice what my Deluxe Cue Smith cost to ship to the same guy by ground service. I have used mine for a few years now and am real happy with it. These are a little bit of a pain to build so I have not advertised them on my site. I just build them upon request.

Check with Brianna. It looks like he's just beginning to market a CNC shaft machine for a price comparable to a machine equipped with taper bars. Looks like a superb deal.

I believe if I were going to get another, it would without a doubt be something that is computer aided. Even if you've never worked with cad/cam programs before it would be well worth your time to do the self schooling and learn the little bit you need to know to operate the machine.
It is very easy to learn and you will have infinite tapering ability on not only your shafts but the entire cue. Any extra cost over a taper bar setup will far out way itself in the long run.
Taper bar setups are nice and do the job they are intended to do with minimal problems but I believe you are limiting your abilities with one.

I agree. Taper bars are fine, but limit you to that taper. For me, it's fine for now because I have already done the work to find the taper I like & i'm not planning to change. But I might, who knows what the future holds? When I do, it'll be with the aid of CNC.

No kidding.
Sometimes manual tapering is much easier and faster ( hogging out short pieces ) but freakin' ey. Mercy on those who have to cut 50 shafts on manual machines.
