Tapering down Help - from 13mm

Hey Guys, I have a Viguera Cue with the G10 pin. I'm very happy with the hit. I used to play 5 nites a week for about 5 years but that was 20 years ago with possibly an 11.75mm if memory serves correctly. A year ago I got back into playing 2x per week and that's when I got the cue. Like I said I do like the hit, its a 13mm shaft made from very old wood I was told 1930s (great shaft just too big) and I want to take it down. I'm not sure how far to go. I don't know the pros and cons of let's say an 11.5mm vs a 12.5mm. Any links you guys can point me to or any advice would really be appreciated. I shoot 8 and 9 ball and prefer one cue at least that's what I'm thinking at this point in time. I'm looking to get the work done this week. Thanks in advance.
 
I would hesitate to go below 12 1/2 mm. I'm sure you could get used to it but if not you could get it turned down more if you wish. I have two playing cues, one with two shafts, 13 mm and the other with four shafts, two 12 1/2, one 12.7, and one about 12 1/4. I can play with any/all of them with no problem.

You need to go to the "ask the cuemaker" section for this. IMO if you take the shaft more than about a quarter mm the feel of the cue will change and you may not be happy with it. If I were you I would buy a new shaft the size you want and see if you still like it.

It really is all personal preference. A few things to consider:

1. You can take more wood off, but not put it back on.
2. Most people don't go below 12.0 to 12.5, so if you do go below that, you might have a hard time selling the shaft in the future if that matters to you.
3. Try as many of your friend's cues in the pool hall as you can, to see if there is a particular size you like best.
4. Get a pair of cheap calipers ($12 on ebay) to know with certainty what size you are dealing with.

If I were you I'd buy another shaft for the cue at a size you think you like, then go from there. Sounds like you have a nice old shaft that you like the play of, so I wouldn't screw around with it.
 
Ask the Cue Maker Forum is a good bet. Not that the members in the Main can't answer your question. You have the makers who can answer your technical questions and players that have been there, done that.

If the shaft is that old, I might hesitate to monkey with it just out of principle.

if you are planning on giving it to a repair man, he isn't going to take it all the way down for you in one shot anyway, which is probably a good thing anyway if you are trying to find the right diameter that you are looking for.

For example, you can buy a Players LD HXT shaft on EBay or any of the other suppliers for a real decent price. I got a great deal on a Players HXT, 2 of the 12.75 and one 11.75.

You can get them in a 12.75 mm and 11.75 mm just like the Predator diameters.

Myself, I can't play with a 13 mm any more. It feels like I have a telephone pole in my bridge hand.

I have and play with anything from a 11.75 up to a 12.40.

Then, along with finding the proper diameter that you like, you will most likely be interested in finding the right taper for yourself.

If you were to try a after market shaft, all you may be interested in doing after is having a repair man play with the taper a bit for you once you find the diameter that you prefer.

Once you find that magic diameter and taper for yourself, it will be much easier to have a maker or repair man duplicate a spare for yourself in the future.
Keeping in mind that most likely, unless you are lucky, you won't get 2 identical shafts that are going to feel or play exactly the same for you.

Makers can try and match them up and they may get close but then you are buying very good quality and that will cost you more in order to have that done.

Depends on what your budget is for a couple of shafts.

Myself, I'm not that great a player that I can discern between two shafts anyway. I can to a certain point but its so minute that the difference between 2 shafts isn't going to affect my game much anyway.
