They were .850 thousands at the joint, and they were 12.75 mm or approximately .300 thousands at the tip.

I think what the OP is asking is what is the diameter at every inch increment down the length of the shaft, if I read him correctly.
It sounds as though he'd like to duplicate the taper.
I'd have to agree, it's a pretty sweet taper.

PS. I still have a 1/2 doz. Gen1 partials in my shop but I'm not there right now. Also, I happen to know that they are all above 12.75mm, some very close to 13. The taper should be close to the same though. When I get back over there, I'll get your taper measurements for you.

Hi,

If you want to recreate that shaft taper just remember that the Predator shafts have a built in anti deflection technology. The ferrule is soft and the end of the shaft is hollow with some fiberglass type of fibers in there.

If you make a maple shaft and copy that taper, I think you will find the hit point on the object ball will move. I am not against Predator shafts but I believe once you commit to using one all of your other shaft will be useless to you because you must adjust to the hit point and that requires time and practice adjustment.

laminated shaft

thanks for your help, tonkin cues is building me a cue as we speak,he asked me to get the measurements for my shaft.well i like that first generation shaft, and he has nice laminated shafts in stock,so i'm trying to duplicate the taper,he asked that i measure from the tip to the joint,i inch apart, what would you call that type of taper? ,they have different names for different tapers right?.i do beleive at the ferrel it's 12.75.i could really use those numbers if anybody can help me.thanks again frank. thanks kJ and rick for time and help

Yes, the name of the taper is a Pro-taper as compared to a European taper. Be it known however that there probably is a million variations of a Pro Taper.

I would think Tonkin, being a cue maker, could have answered those questions for you.

Here is the rub ... no maple shaft, laminated or otherwise, will play like that Predator you used even if it has the same identical taper profile.
If you want that feel then have your cue maker fit a genuine Predator shaft to the cue and you will be happy.

OK, I've got the numbers for you.
This is the taper from one of the Gen1 partials I have in my shop.

Continue taper to mate @ joint.

As you can see, it has a pro-taper for the first 15", growing by roughly .002" per inch of length in the stroke zone. At the 15" point, it goes into a different taper.

I'd appreciate if no one told me that this info is already available in the 'search' data base. Thank you.

that is kind of strange that pete tonkin didn't have one around to measure for you.

I would say that there are very few 314 shafts still floating around that haven't been used, sanded and abused. KJ still has his little horde and has come through with an accurate, original taper.

Some time back, KJ was so kind as to provide specific measurements of the joint ring dimensions on a typical black w/ silver ring 314 shaft - these have become typical for aftermarket LD shafts of the joint type I use.
This time he spends, and info he provides in a timely fashion, at no cost & with no immediate likelihood of getting a cue building job from it.
I appreciate seeing that from him, Ryan, Craig, Dick, and so many others that contribute here readily & frequently.

Thanx Chris,

That's an incredibly nice thing to say and I greatly appreciate it.
It's quite an honor to be included with the names you have stated and while it would be a daunting task to mention all the names of those who share here unselfishly, two more names come to mind that I feel deserve mention and they are Mike Webb and Chris Hightower. Yes, the list would be long indeed.

Fact is, I've been very blessed by the game and I have no problem with giving back when I can. A clever little analogy would be the penny jar on the check-out counter by the cash register. When you need a penny or two to help pay your bill, that's what it's there for. But if we all keep taking and taking, then pretty soon the jar is empty and the guy behind you is on his own. That's just not right. This analogy applies to a lot of areas in life.

Now, let's get back to that part about not getting any ensuing cue sales out of this for a second. Are ya kiddin me? LoL
I jest. I'm very well provided for.

Thanx Again
