Tapper Bar

When using this flexible type of taper bar, how do you get it back to exactly where it was if you need to temporarily cut a different taper? Do you loosen up all of the screws, chuck up one of your finished shafts and run down the length of it, tightening the screws up as you go?

It seems like after you have determined your final taper, that it might be best to have that cut on a solid piece of steel or aluminum and only use the black flexible piece as needed. At least you can then easily return to your exact taper.

On the Deluxe, a removable bar is an option.
I did that and bought an extra bar.
One is set where I like it and the other I can play with.

Usually a few trial and error cuts are needed till you have it right. Even if it is marked you are talking about thousandths and you just can't move something and have it back exactly. Your goal as a cuemaker should be to have something that is fool proof and not waste a bunch of your valuable time. Even if you use a dial indicator it takes a sample cut to fine tune it. Ideally is to have a pair of taper bars in tandem so you just switch back and forth with just the moving of the tracer and not have to change settings unnecessarily.

I am just not a fan of "Rube Goldberg" set ups. The time needs to be taken to set up equipment right. If done right the effort will pay off for years to come. Just looking at the machinery section on this forum there is enough food for thought where someone should be able to build it themselves. Probably even more suited to their own needs.

I might be selling the ones off of my deluxe in a while if your intrested lemme know, but that all depends on me getting a dedicated taper machine.

Thanks Dave, Is there a picture anywhere so I could get an idea of what it is and how much it would cost me to adapt to my jet lathe?
thanks, Bill

Do a search on "taper" under my user ID for a taper setup for a Jet 1340 GHB.

Hi,
Yes I did the search and it's very informative. I like what you did and I'll be aiming at something near that in addition I'm trying to have a few stations dedicated to various operations. Thanks for your help as always.

i would think the flexible taperbar would be better as a repair accessory, you could easily match quickly a products dimesions for work, without altering your personal milled taper setup
