TAR 25 Podcast Tonight at 9 PM Eastern. Any Questions for Dechaine or Hatch?

i would like to hear them each rank the top 5 players in the game today.
what particular guy they cant beat for some reason and why?
how do they stay focused in a long tourney.
there approach going into a long tourney or a tar match.
the difference between a money game and tournament.

You don't remember any fatasses that played great pool?
Mizerak?
Buddy Hall?
Tony Ellin?
Shannon Daulton aint skinny.
I wouldn't call Dechaine a fat ass, but he doesnt look like a triathlete either.
I realize that most of these names are from yesteryear, but how many of today's skinny players smoke cigarettes or weed, or meth?
How many drink?

It's not an olympic sport. That's my point.

Steve and Buddy played great before they became fatasses. Ellin was not Mizerak or Buddy. Shannon Daulton ain't skinny, you got me there. Very good point. I give up you're right, Dechaine isn't a triathlete. The only thing he and Hatch lifts is porkchops.

A question for both players.

If you never played pool what would you be?

I've heard about it but havent seen the thread. Plates kinda full right now and honestly I prefer to focus on the matches that are happening now rather than something that may or may not happen if two hundred things go right, no one changes their mind, stubs their toe or discovers fusion in the interim.

thats cool, im just trying to toss some ideas your way

I would ask Dechaine about his match with Van Boening in the nine ball semis at Derby City this year. Those who were there will recall that Mike was doing some crazy things in his warmup while he waited for Shane to get there. He was slamming balls into the long rail and catching them in the air and doing other things that, to me, were at odds with appropriate preparation for the match. I recall telling the fellow next to me that "if this is how Mike prepares to play one of the game's superstars, he will have his clock cleaned." And, sure enough, Mike played poorly and was crushed by Shane.

I wonder why Mike Dechaine, a rising star coming into his own, didn't use his time to sneak in a little more quality practice for the match. Was this just a way of calming his nerves for a big match, or did he learn something from the experience.

to Hatch:

Who does he think is the toughest opponent he's ever matched up with?

Has he ever lost a money match? to Who?

World Cup Of Pool

Ask Mike about the world cup of pool in the PI. Did he match up any and would he be interested doing the same thing as Shane and spend a lot of time over there.

Also ask them both which filipino scares them the most in a long race of 10 ball for big money.

Justin,

You got that thing up on you tube all ready? Your fired up son. I like it!

Podcast was great. Only thing you guys were missing was some cocktails and cigars...

I enjoyed it. We fell into the "whats wrong with pro pool and how to fix it" trap for a little too long but overall I think it was a good one. Some good insight from both guys. I wanted to get to equipment questions and maybe some demo's but we just ran out of time.

I thought that one of the most interesting moments came when the long race was compared to the short race in nine/ten ball.

Dechaine commented that there's a lot more pressure in a short race because a mistake can be fatal. I think this is something that not enough American players understand. --- the short race format allows the cream to rise to the top. To me, the race to six format at the Mosconi Cup is electrifying for this very reason. Your next mistake may be the one that loses the match. Pressure, pressure, pressure. As Dennis Hatch noted, you can't ever play badly for an hour and live to talk about it in a short race tournament.

I love the long race format of the TAR match, but I agree 100 percent with Mike here. In a short race, you're always on the edge, and because of it, the emotions run very high. That's one reason that Dennis Hatch, just as he claims, could rally the players and the fans in the pressure cooker of short race play that is the Mosconi Cup.

This is not really about choosing between the two, but it's more about celebrating both types of races and realizing that each has an important place in our sport.
