Ten die in billiard hall shooting

COTABATO, Philippines (AP) -- A man opened fire with an assault rifle on a packed billiard hall in the Philippines, killing at least 10 people in an attack apparently meant to avenge the recent slaying of his son, police said Monday.

Five other people were wounded in the attack Sunday in Lanao del Sur province's Balabagan town, said police Chief Superintendent Akmad Mamalinta.

The attacker's family apparently had a lingering feud with another family, which the man suspected was behind his son's death last month, Mamalinta said.

The assailant rode past in a van and fired into the billiard hall crowd, which he believed included some of his rivals, Mamalinta said.

Eight people were killed instantly and two others died in a hospital, he said.

Mamalinta said witnesses had identified the attacker and police were searching for him.

Deadly family feuds, locally called "redo," are common in many parts of the Philippines' volatile south, where a large number of unlicensed guns and weak law enforcement often lead to violent confrontations between rival groups.

...a large number of unlicensed guns and weak law enforcement often lead to violent confrontations between rival groups.

"You've got an unlicensed gun, you bastard!..I'll kill you for that!"

"Well, you have weak law enforcement, so I'll kill you for that!"

It is sad, but also ridiculous how the "causes" of violence are so simple that they can be included in a one sentence editorial at the end of the story.

Also, the problem wasn't IN the pool hall, but was apparently done from OUTSIDE the pool hall. This story is full of holes. I wonder what really happened and why.

I hope at least one of them had a $2,500.00 custom cue in their hand when they were offed.

Sorry to hear that kind of story. It's sad when innocent people are put into harms way for no reason at all.

This is no different from any rival Godfathers of the underworld. Sometimes worst. But this kind family feud is still happening, better to retaliate than call the police and charge the suspect to the proper court. From the news, the shooter only suspected that his rival was with the crowd, unfortunate for the bystanders, unfortunate also for him, he now have more family rivals.

A pool hall in San Diego (I think it was called Star Billiards) got shot up around 8-10 years ago by a gang of vietnamese guys.

One of the best players in town actually got hit. They weren't aiming for him- I think there was a rival group there- but they just kind of sprayed bullets all over the place and one had his name on it.

He came out of it OK.

All the shooting should be done on the tables. That is very sad.

I wonder if a debate could be made that he shot "lights out" or that he was "unstoppable". Sad situation.

Why don't they ever shoot thier rivals at track and field events, lawn bowling arenas or velodromes. Seems pool halls have magnets that attract lead.

It's probably that pool halls are more accessible to someone who wants to just drive by and shoot the place up....basically they're no better than Middle Eastern terrorists.....

Actually the chances are that people in pool halls are a little more shady than track and field runners. Gambling, drinking, sex, drugs, rock and roll. That is what attracts gangbangers.

Pack heat. That is all I can say.

I sometimes pack a 45 and it really gets respect from those not comprehending the word "NO". Reach out and touch someone, is my motto.

There was a shooting at Star Billiards in San Diego maybe 10 years ago (don't know for sure). Sam Manaole was the one who got shot. Lucky for one of the girls that worked there that the bullet went through him before hitting her arm (or she would have lost it). If you actually heard Sam tell the story you would get a good laugh. He said some people were still shooting pool and playing cards while the shooting was going on while others scrambled like cockroaches when the lights go on. It's sad this stuff happens.

Sam is a good guy, doesn't surprise me he laughs it off now. He shoots pretty damn good, too.

My friend Peter Young was in the finals at a weekly tourney at College Billiards and had to play Sam. Unfortunately for Peter, my buddy Anthony was waiting to play Sam some backgammon for a little dough. Sam was eager to play backgammon so he just broke and ran 3 or 4 racks, got his money, and trucked right on over to play Anthony.

Peter had a kind of stunned, "What the hell just happened?" look on his face it was over so quick.

Sam was at the last Fast Eddie's event here in Houston a couple weeks ago and was offering anyone in the room any amount for a set of 8-ball/same pocket. He and Hillbilly were woofing a little at each other, but nothing materialized. I'm not sure if he had any takers, but the house was full of great players. I think that says something about Sam right there. BTW, I drew Sam in the first round. Needless to say, it was a long night for me. Didn't know who he was until after the match and now have even more respect for him. He seemed like a really nice, quiet guy and had one of the most beautiful, smooth strokes.

The AK-47 is like any other man made device for the most part. Tis an INANIMATE Object until it is in someone hands.

All the Gun Law in the World, or Law Enforcement Personal will not stop gun Violence, as if they did New York City with its TOUGH SULLIVAN GUN LAW, would be Gun Violence FREE...

New York City is very far from Gun Violence/Crime FREE....

Here in Atlanta a town made a gun law that required the homeowner to own a firearm. The town is Kennesaw, GA. I believe it was inacted in 1989 in response to Chicago's bans. Since it was inacted there have been 4 homicides. 2 were by a knife with the first one in 1993. 4 years after the law was inacted. 1 was by a gun in I think 1998. And I just recently heard in the news about 5-6 months ago there was a gun related homicide.

Also when it was inacted crime rate went down 60%. Because of political beliefs I do not believe in the madatory gun ownership. I think if litteraly everyone had to own a gun from age 18 till death violence would go down. But I do not want the government deciding wether I should own one or not.

My concealed weapon of choice. 44magnum revolver.

It's reasuring to know that the people who populate AZbilliards are well armed. I feel much safer online now.
My favorite quote "Shoot Pool, not people".

I personally don't find either of those comments appropriate. :-P I'm not the type to cry foul or ask for moderator action (and I haven't here), but I can say this: people are dead, so, "quips" probably don't work well here...

As to the topic of gun control, could we save that for the NPR forum? Just a request... because it really has nothing to do with pool.
