Working with so many players directly to perfect their aiming skills I have learned so much along the way.
These things that I have learned are huge when it comes to teaching a player in a way that makes it easier to learn. If you can't learn or understand what someone is teaching than what good does it do.
You need to try this:
Set up the cue ball in the center of the table about one foot above the side pockets. Place the object ball on the side rail, on the first diamond below the side pocket. Should be a 1/4 ball hit. Check it with a ghost ball to make sure.
Shoot this shot with no english with a little bit of follow with a medium stroke 25 times. Keep track of how many you miss.
Now set the shot up on the other side so you are cutting the ball the opposite way. Keep track about how many you missed.
Now get down and shoot one on one side and then shoot one on the other side.
You will notice that when you cut the ball to the right or left that one of these ways will be a little more difficult than the other. This will directly coincide with which one of your eyes is dominent.
If you are right eye dominent you will find out that it is easier to cut to the right than it is to the left. If you are left eye dominent it will be easier to cut to the left.
Now here is the most interesting thing. I have found that about 15 to 20% of the players that I check with the so called eye dominence tests will show that they are dominent in the right eye when really they are left eye dominent. In other words they totally flunked the test.
When I ran into one of these players it was really a struggle to teach them Perfect Aim because it was all backwards. Eventually we would figure it out but this was totally baffling as to how this could happen.
When I do the eye dominence test I just go right to my left eye. I'm left eye dominent. But i guess it makes no difference why these select few flunk the eye dominence test. We just have to get it right. Because if we don't get it right there is no way to perfect ones aim to the point of making every shot look good as far as your aim.
Oh sure, you can get your stance right and position your body right and get your eyes close to where they need to be but to know where this PERFECT spot is, is huge.
When you get down on a shot and look at it and it really looks like it will go is half the battle. If it doesn't look right your results won't be very right either.
This is why this little shot that I'm having you set up and cut both ways will tell the story for yourself. Only you know which way looks the best and which way is harder to aim.
And yes you can learn to get the eyes in that perfect position. Sometimes or most of the time just doesn't get it. You need to have them in the perfect position all the time to have the best chance to execute the shot properly. Whether it's pocketing a ball or playing a saftey.
Now here is the problem. From what I've seen in the years that I have been teaching Perfect Aim and the last years with my intense teaching and training I have never ran into anyone that really understood what I am teaching until I showed them with a Perfect Aim lesson. They might see a little piece of Perfect Aim and think they know it all. It's a whole package.
If you don't understand the problem it is impossible to fix it. Make sense.
This little test won't fix your problem but it will certainly identify it and will help you understand why you miss some of the shots that you do.
When I'm in a tough match with top players I always know which eye is their dominent eye is. If I have to push or play safe I always try to make sure my opponent is shooting in a manner so they are cutting opposite of the dominent eye. This raises my odds of them missing and getting another opportunity to win the game. It works. Believe IT !!!!!!!
