I used to go to Star years ago before work or on weekends. Star is closed, I believe. They used to recover the tables twice a year in 2000, 2001. I thought Grand Billiards had Diamonds but I've never been there. I lived near Palisade Park, NJ which has a large Korean community. I played in all the Korean halls and never had a problem, but it was during the day, mostly. Royal Billiards is still open in Little Ferry. I wouldn't recommend it as it was then, may be better now. Most of the Korean places have 3 cushion and Korean 4 ball billiard tables in addition to pool tables. Billiards Cafe in Lodi was an absolute cesspool. All my experiences ended in 2007, so things may be different now. Most of the places I went to started closing when smoking was banned and when the economy tanked in 2008.
Star Billiards was a little gem back in the day. The owner, Sammy, was a great guy and the spot used to really bang on the weekends - sometimes there was a 2-3 hour wait for a table! That’s where I really got into the game.
To the OP, sadly, there aren’t many action spots in NNJ. Castle is right around the corner from Teterboro and that may be your best bet. If you want to drive a little, Sandcastle in Edison is pretty much guaranteed action if you’re in heat.

Ha, ha. I think a lot of people don't realize just how much pilots (and flight attendants) actually travel. When I was flying for the airlines (I'm retired, now) I typically flew five, 3-day trips, each month. Do that for 20-30 years, and you have some serious time on the road. 
I played NJ Mel in Lodi before he passed. I enjoyed my playing time with him. RIP
I used to have some 1P action there when that first table was set up with 4 1/8 corners. Last time I was there they opened up the pockets and I haven’t been back since
