played expertly
Played expertly you soon lock the object ball on the rail and the cue ball to the object ball. The person that does this wins the nudge game.
The rule that I think is referred to is that a legal shot has to be made with a forward motion of the stick. The old trick of laying a tip on the table and lifting straight up has been ruled illegal I believe. Hitting the rear of the cue ball from the side is still legal I think and so would be shooting with the bridge hand I believe. Gotta try it one day just to hear the scream from the other player!

Poppy-Cosh!
(I gotta go try this tip though)
edited to acknowledge the ingenuity behind the tip and not come off like a bah humbug since I don't know how to bring about the "end game" of playing what I call patty cake
