Played expertly you soon lock the object ball on the rail and the cue ball to the object ball. The person that does this wins the nudge game.

The rule that I think is referred to is that a legal shot has to be made with a forward motion of the stick. The old trick of laying a tip on the table and lifting straight up has been ruled illegal I believe. Hitting the rear of the cue ball from the side is still legal I think and so would be shooting with the bridge hand I believe. Gotta try it one day just to hear the scream from the other player!

Thanks! I looked for this recently and couldn't find it. No wonder.... they hid it under "Deflecting Cue Ball on Opening Break".

There's a way to do this that isn't a foul. I'll try to explain.

Lay your cue on the table in line with the shot/hit you want to make on the cue ball. Now take your thumb and index finger and grip the shaft about one and half to two inches behind the tip. The rest of the cue remains lying on the table. Pick up the shaft with your two fingers (Thumb and index) and use your other fingers (same hand) to support your hand on the table. Now move the tip close to the cue ball and gently make your shot. Practice this a few times and you will have it. You won't foul this way. Totally legal and very doable!

Once again, you're sworn to secrecy!

P.S. This shot can be done with the shaft only as well, when there isn't room to lay your entire cue on the table. Remember, SHHHH!

I have shot this shot alot, but just like Jay explained except I get close to the cueball at the bottom of the cueball and just pull straight up real fast and your going up and away from the cueball at the same time(and its not a foul) no way way possible to hit the cueball twice or committ a foul. Its a very valuable shot to know.
