The Biggest thing in pool...

The Derby room rate was way too much, but this is just way way too much. I'm planning to go if it happens, but I'll be staying off site. They are shooting themselves in the foot and this could be the one and only year this tournament goes off (assuming it goes off this this year) if they can't do something about that room rate. Players can get a decent off site room AND get a rental car for less than this room rate alone, so the hotel will lose not only the room revenue but a lot of the food revenue too.

I'm simply saying a lot can happen between now and then, and maybe some support would go a long way in helping this tourney kick off. Keep in mind this is the 1st one @ Moody, so it may come down to the wire, as you know. Sounds like Cristina can pull some strings with her contact at Moody Gardens.

What I meant by my post is that if ANYONE (not just me) were planning an event at Moody Gardens and they TRUELY expected a couple hundred people per day over a 10 day event, a hotel will give you a VERY good room rate. BUT, you are liable for meeting a minimum number of room reservations for your event, the lower the number of rooms, the higher the price goes up. If you don't meet your room block, you are charged a pretty significant amount of the money the hotel loses for holding those rooms blocked off for your event. So, with a room rate that high, when the normal booking rate for anyone off the street is only $5 difference from the group rate, their contract CAN'T include a very high room guarentee.

I'd be happy to help the organizers with anything but me knowing people at Moody Gardens' doesn't have any weight on what they negotiated in their contract because, in the end, the organizers will be liable for whatever was agreed upon.

I agree, a lot could change by the time this rolls around and it very well could be a great event. I just think no information should have gone out until more useful information was available to players who are considering attending.

Man, I hope you are not getting your feathers ruffled! Nothing personal, but it seems that you were involving yourself and your contact. I just believe if "pool players" want and really expect decent events, then they should support and give positive feedback, especially with such a new and ultimately huge event. Let's just let the people promoting the tourney handle the details from here on out. It's like this - if we don't have anything good to say then let's not say it at all.

It is my understanding, from another thread, that this website WAS NOT released by the promotors. Someone who knew about it decided to post it up. They probably had no intention of this site being released until they were ready. So any speculation, is just that, speculation.

The website is hasta la vista baby.....

edit: Ok I guess the whole thing isn't dead, maybe they're just updating it. we'll have to see, people who want to do something like this better put money in escrow or something with the $h1T that's been shoved on us in recent years or they're going no where!!!!!!

Hopefully, they will put the exact dates for each discipline on the web site. I don't have a cache of 11 days available and need to know when the one pocket starts.

Efren asked me about this tournament on the flight from Louisville and I told him I heard about but had very little information on it. He said he was interested in going and it was a BIG TOURNAMENT and I should go. If I go he said I could stake him in all of the mini-tournaments. :D What a guy!

We'll just have to keep our fingers crossed. It would be nice to see some recognizable names associated with this tournament. Galveston is the place where my great grand parents died in 1900. My grandfather, barely a teenager was the only surviving family member of the hurricane. That hurricane killed over 6,000 people.
