get over itWeren't you just on here kissing I mean thanking the mods & owner for such a wonderful site? If it's so wonderful then quit complaining, or tell the mods they are NOT doing a wonderful job because YOU are offended. Points you make are very valid; what's good for the goose, is good for the gander. Methinks there's a fine line here. The person that wrote that avatars are reflective of the person, not the forum, is right on. Also, the discussion of "what you wear when you enter a forum" also applies, IMHO. (Kudos to cleary on that point.) However, I don't think some of the folks that have some of the avatars they do, will say they'd walk into a pool hall wearing a T-shirt with that avatar plastered on it. Most pool halls I go to, have a prominently-displayed dress code; it's not so much of a dress code per se, but contains a list of things that you cannot wear in the establishment. For example: flip-flops, hats or bandanas that unquestionably display gang colors, shirts or pants with extremely suggestive, sexual, violent/militant graphics or pictures, etc. These places will more than likely either ask you to leave, or sometimes if they know you, they'll reach under the counter, hand you one of that establishment's custom T-shirts, tell you to put this on over what you're wearing while you're in there, and return it when you leave. (Ah, I can just see it now -- the rebellious ones are going to read into that, editing their avator picture in GIMP / PhotoShop / other graphics editor, and make it look like they "hung a sheet" over the picture. ;-) )

Anyway, there's always that option in one's profile configuration settings to not display avatars or signatures to begin with.

Personally, when I *did* have avatars displayed in my profile settings, I just ignored the ones that were off-color or in questionable taste (I call mine "calloused eyes"). Don't get me wrong, Marissa, I'm a red-blooded guy and appreciate tasteful avatars of females, but I also know that women have the right to do the same -- as long as it wasn't pictures of [concealed or unconcealed] genitalia. I'll bet if a guy had a questionable avatar (e.g. picturing women's genitalia -- concealed or unconcealed), the mods would quickly intervene -- especially if complaints were lodged against it. As I think about this, I say to myself, "gosh, this *really* is a very fine line -- what determines 'questionable'?" I forget who said this but it went something like this ~ I can't define porn, but I know it when I see it. Perhaps that which causes complaints to be lodged? I wish I had the answer to that one...

Hope this is helpful?
-Sean

[...]Really, who gives a shit?

This is a kinda funny question to ask in response to someone who evidently gave a shit enough to start a thread about it.

Everyone has class---Some are First Class and some are Second Class---that's just the way it is. Don't fight it when you can't, just try to set a better example.

By the way---I think some of the avators' are artistically creative but distasteful.

I can see how some girls might object to all the nearly bared breasts on some avatars, but I'm still surprised that a young girl is upset to the point she finds it necessary to make this big a deal of it.

I haven't seen anything on this site that is any worse than your average Cosmopolitan or Allure magazine with models half naked, naked with paint only on,etc...

Pictures of dudes kissing is a lot different than scantily clad, but not actually naked, girls not kissing or doing something actually sexual.

As long as people here don't post anything you can't see on your average beach (well, beaches in Ca or FLA maybe) in the summer, I don't think its worth getting upset about.

Thus, the forums should cater to both genders and stop allowing the guys to use offensive avatars. Otherwise, we should be able to use the same kind images, male versions, of course.

it's kind of childish to do it just to teach us a lesson. it'd be different if the women posted it because they wanted to see it, or to share it with the other women azr's. but the fact is they're posting it as some sort of childish revenge thing

didn't that thread imply that if you didn't like it you could go to a different site? can't please everyone 100% of the time

wait i found something you said that kind of fits with this avatar thing

If you hate Mike, Mr Wilson, AZ, whoever... you don't have to post on this forum. If you aren't happy, find another. I like AZ and the JimBo forum, although I post here more frequently.

just replace "mike, mr wilson,az" with avatars

Hmmmmmm....

Did ya know you can turn avatars off in your user settings so you don't have to suffer the "indignity" of seeing something not much bigger than a postage stamp that offends you?

Amen! Couldn't have said it better myself. Jeez Sweet Marissa...give it a rest already. Its this type of drama that is driving more people away than the "scantily clad" avatars that you despise.

you seem like an intelligent person i guess...maybe you should take a break from the internet and go shoot some pool. you do play, right?

So what is it Marissa? What are you saying this week???

I am sure we all just went over this in the "It's no wonder pool doesn't go anywhere" thread.

Amongst other things, this is what I wrote:

girlwon1 said:
I know the avatar thing has been discussed numerous times already. All you can do is present your image in what you feel is appropriate, and be that positive change again by example. I am sure the answer is not to insert two naked guys holding each other's back sides about to kiss. Answering something you feel is offensive with something you think others will find offensive is not productive, Marissa. I could see your having more of a point if that option wasn't availiable to you in our forum's options. It is, so turn it off. Let the moderators decide what is good and too much for their own forum. They supplied you a way to disagree with their decisions, by shutting them off.

I wrote that remembering that you tried to protest what you felt was inappropriate before by posting that same avatar.

Then you wrote me:

Picture1-4.png

I also wrote at the end of that post....

girlwon1 said:
When you and others decided to follow the Christian path, you make decisions on what you will tolerate to make yourself comfortable. There are many Christians who probably wouldn't hang out in a pool room, or come on this forum. You decided the reward of playing the game itself and those good people you have met here outweigh what you might see. By your own choice, you have to deal with things YOU find are uncomfortable, where I see them as normal pool room behavior.

Do not judge others by the standards you feel are appropriate. Accept who they are and how they are, and you can pray for them that they may find the light that you yourself have said you have felt. Do not frustrate yourself by thinking the reality that is, should be the reality you envision. Be the reality you yourself would like to see, and hope that others might post and conduct themselves by that good example.
girlwon1

So I was lead to believe by your words that you felt that way, that to be a good Christian that you are ever striving to become, you got the whole idea of being what you want to see in the world.

Did Jesus tell his people if someone should steal from your household, that you should go and steal from theirs? Did he think that would teach them a lesson about stealing?

It is said:

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, when my brother won't stop doing wrong to me, how many times must I forgive him? Should I forgive him as many as seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, you must forgive him more than seven times. You must continue to forgive him even if he does wrong to you seventy-seven times. "
Matthew 18:21-22

Did Jesus say to Peter, "If he wronged you, you should wrong him back"?

The thing is I keep hearing you say you are this good Christian person. I do not proclaim to be this great Christian practicer, yet why is it so easy for me who does not practice, know what is right action and what is right speech?

I read just today on another forum where you wrote:

Sweet Marissa said:
Timberly, those posts were made in 2005. I've already said that back then, I thought being a Christian meant just going to church and saying you were a Christian. I've since learned it is much more than that and have changed much of my lifestyle.

So what have you changed? So many of the things you say and do, do not add up to the person you portray you are. I am so tired of seeing you post on here. I have been a member of this forum when you used it as a porn sounding board with Aaron about having things inserted special places. I have been here while you claimed you were transforming to a devout Christian, and look what we have to see as the result.

Really??? I ask you.

I hate that I have to come on this forum now and weed through your threads being on the main page to get to some good ones here and there. One of the answers that Neil Fujiwara posted about a month ago made it all worth it for me at least. It's neat that this board has these great pearls of wisdom from time to time still amongst all the crap you want inject it with.

Mike, I ask you, how many years does it take before enough is enough from this girl?

SM,
your thought that the billiard community should cater to women is ridiculous and immature. as one of those women you note as playing pool, i KNOW how men act in pool rooms and it isn't much different than you see here on the forum - why would it be, they are the same people.

although i do not agree that Barbara's avatar should be removed (since the same standard was not kept for the men), i do believe that both hers and other members do/did push the line with their avatars and they should be either all removed or all stay. i personally could care less either way - i am a grown up and sex is everywhere you look these days.

it is not yours or my responsibility to police this forum, that is what the mods are for. if there is a problem, it needs to be addressed with them. if it is not resolved, take it up with Mike Howerton - he is quite an approachable person. this drama that has been created because you decided to prove a point by posting men kissing each other (which by the way in all of my years on this forum i have not seen women kissing each other, just those with little dress on) is childish and doing nothing but making the whole situation worse.

just my two cents.

Wow, weed through them???? ok lets take a look at the threads that marissa has started since June 3rd.

screen.jpg

Man that must really suck having to WEED through all of what, 4 at most meaningless threads?!?! how do you do it every day? I mean I can see why youd make your long hateful post over having to dig through all 4 of Marissas questionable threads in the main section to find the GOOD ONES. Give me a break, Its easy to jump on Marissa in this thread seeing the majority is against what shes saying, what a time to Man up and make this post. What a joke,. Oh I almost forgot this gem, ,

"Mike, I ask you, how many years does it take before enough is enough from this girl?"

Yea, lets ban Marissa for having an opinion on the whole double standard issue on this forum. . .

gtfo.gif

You'll notice I said, main forum. Forgive me for not saying "posts", instead of or in addition to the word "thread". Her posts are almost constantly not pool related and/or that she contradicts herself incessantly. I happen to weed out her responses to most things and that is just me. That doesn't mean to suggest that others are not entertained or informed by what she has to say.

Again, making an observation over knowing what she has posted over the last three years and stating my opinion over it, is exactly that, my opinion. So you want to pick out my post out of all of the others that call her names such as immature, childish, ridiculous and then from another to "get over it"? You will find nowhere in my post where I called her a name at all.

I am myself trying to understand if she is the devout Christian she keeps portraying herself as, why does she go and post something she felt was offensive to answer this thing that offended her, when the week before she had expressed herself differently on the matter?

I also did not call for a ban on Marissa. She has been told repetitiously in the past that the mods and administrators would handle the avatar situation in the way that they deemed best for their forum that they own and she is a voluntary member of.

From Mike himself this week:

AzHousePro said:
Marissa, do we really have to go down this road again?

We understand completely how you feel about the female avatars.

On the other hand, I am not going to have an 8 year old child walk up to me while I am on my computer and have to explain to him why those guys are kissing each other on your OLD signature file.

Enough already.

Mike

Marissa posted the same picture about a year or so ago in protest then. She was talked to about it at that time also. She keeps bringing it up, so I say enough is enough already. That doesn't mean their can't be an agreement between Mike and Marissa. I think Marissa does understand this is Mike's forum, and she is free to come here and contribute, or she can not, or she can for the love of everything holy turn off the avatars.

I got sick of avatars. Some are offensive. The grandkids see this site along with me and some of you have pretty slutty taste.

I just shut them all off. Mike should just get rid of all avatars. No need for that stuff.

I Agree

I think pool should cater to women

Lets add Red and Blue diamonds on the pool table

I can play from the traditional white diamonds Marrisa can play from the reds

This would give you a bigger kithen to play in when someone scratches and a woman in a bigger kithen is always a good thing

Wow fill the Jukebox with Barbra Striessan or Mellisa Ethrage

Play Steel Magnolias on the big screen instaed of football or pool matches

Maybe add tampon machines in the mens bathroom too

I know lets let only women be 2's in the APA and not men

I Give my wife the garage, my paycheck, the last 4, that isn't enough now they want the avatars too

Whats next a woman Vice Prsident?

I agree that the pool world in general would be well advised to catar to the females. They represent at least 55% of the population, lots of the money available, and they have the ability to pull men into the game/room/website.
