Does somebody know which Cue Mosconi had ???

As we have recently have seen here in the AZForum about the Auction on ebay of the Balabushka Cue that Mosconi played with.
What about other Cues of him ???

Does somebody know ??? Are there any pictures to see ???

The Italian American Sports Hall of Fame in Chicago has a Willie Mosconi exhibit that has one of his many Herman Rambow cues

There was an article in Billiard Digest a few years ago, I think by Mike Shamos but I could be wrong, describing a day he spent with Mosconi at his home. Mosconi showed him a closet where he had tossed all the cues given to him by cuemakers over the years. The author said that many of them looked like they had never been opened. Willie explained that cuemakers were always giving him cues hoping he would play with them. Apparently he didn't oblige - he just tossed them in the closet.

I don't know if Mosconi ever played with a Balabushka - he may have in his later years. But during his tournament days he played with Rambows. I believe he gave Newman and Gleason Rambow cues to use in making The Hustler.

I suspect that Mosconi didn't think the cue was that important to his play, and I bet he stuck with Rambows long after there were better made and fancier cues available.

Here's a link to Competition Sports. They sell a series of cues in their HOF section. Mosconi's cues are not shown yet, but replicas of other great players cues are shown. Supposedly, they take the players original cue and reproduce an exact likeness. Mosconi's cues are scheduled for production, so maybe check back from time to time.

Willie Mosconis favorite cue was a Rambo, in fact when he ran, his record of 526 balls he was using his Rambo. A photo of this cue is in the billiards encyclopedia, in the Rambo section. However, I would suspect that Willie also had cues from almost ever cue maker from the 1940's until his death. Many cues makers would just send the top players a cue hoping they would like it and use it.

However, the Rambo cues were almost a staple cue for the top players. While some used cues made by Harvey Martin, if they were sponsored by Brunswick they used a Brunswick. So in effect Herman Rambo kinda had a Monopoly, because Brunswick sponsored all the major events from the 1930 into the 1950's.

Hope this helps!!!!!!

Fat's Rambow

I am fairly new here, so if this has been asked and answered, please excuse me.
Does anyone know for sure what happened to Fats Rambow cue. I have heard a couple of rumors and believe that is all they are, rumors.
Heard a story years ago that Fats liked his Rambow so well that not too long after he purchased it, he steered some other players to Rambow.
I met Fats in 1967. My girl friend and I had dinner with him and Eva-line at Jansco's. True story, he just invited us to join them for dinner. Thing is, we mostly talked about dogs. We are/were both big time dog lovers. Saw him many times after that and he always had really great stories to tell and was a pleasure to watch him, wether in action or entertaining a crowd. I have many many great memories of Johnston City.

Wow..links are great. Thank you very much.

Especially the Mosconi Collection from Billiard Warehouse.

Thumbs up

Mosconi's favorite, and long time playing cue was a Rambow.
That was the cue he used when he ran the 526 in Springfield OH.
It is now in the collection of the Glenn family, or at least it was
the last time I talked to Pete<4-5 years?>.

Willie used his Bushka - fancy for one of George's cues - in his
1980 instructional video.

Rambow stated in an article that the movie studio purchased
2 cues from him for the filming of The Hustler. Of course,
they had to have them yesterday - he even noted they
wanted a piece of Ivory on one of them. That is the cue Gleason uses.
Herman seemed quite proud he got $275 for the two. His going rate
for a cue at that time was about $65. Them wa the day, eh?
