Dear Milo,
Being on the road is.... Trying to catch a nap in the car (where it's either 110* or 10 below) while your partner is taking 20 hours to break some bar player he should have beaten in 30 minutes.
Being on the road is.... Hearing an angry side bettor you've got stuck $12.00, mutter to his friend.."yeah, the S.O.B plays good, but he ain't bulletproof".
Being on the road is.... Convincing your significant other that you don't know why you're 2000 miles from home, when you said you'd only be gone a day or so.
Being on the road is....Missing (way too many) Little League games.
Being on the road is.... Discovering that you have exactly $28.56 more than you had when you left home 5 weeks ago.
Being on the road is....Loading up with bennies to drive 1700 miles home, non-stop, 2 day's before Christmas, and your car breaks down in "the armpit of the world" (which by the way, is Blyth, California) Ever try getting a car repaired on Christmas Eve in Blyth ?
Being on the road is....Also crammed full of memories, and experiences that last a lifetime. And if you're lucky, a lot of good friend's that do too.

Anyway, That's what I'm guessing it might be like.

Thanks for the response Dick. Some funny (and not so)stuff. And I bet you have many storys.
I have never been on the road, so I dont have any to tell, but I love to hear them. When my friend gets back, Im sure he will have a few to tell.

Milo,

I wish your friend the best of luck. I can't imagine what "the road" would be like today. In my time, gas was .20-30 cents a gal. and you could get a good clean room for $10-$15. I would guess the nut (for two) would approach $2-3 hundred a day, these days.(and thats if you didn't drive too much)
Hope he..(1) play's real good..(2) gets to bet real high (3) knows his way around a bar or poolroom. Number 3, would be a must.

Being on the road is....driving 200 miles to play a guy who never shows up.
Being on the road is....driving 200 miles to play a guy who walks in and and says "Hello Jay, what are you doing here?"
Being on the road is....driving 200 miles to play a guy who is supposed to bet real high. You start out for ten a game, win three games and he quits and asks for weight.
Being on the road is.....waking up in a motel room and your "buddy" is gone. He took his car and all the money and left you alone with your clothes, your cue and $36 in your pocket. Have a nice day!
Being on the road is.....Getting busted in a small town in Idaho, and having to sleep in your car. And the next day playing pool on "ass" in a rough joint where no one knows you.
Being on the road is.....Chasing games that don't happen, Getting there a day after the high roller went broke, Escaping out the back door after you made an $80 "score", Playing pool with drunks in bars for one and two dollars to make the nut, and Going to jail for playing $5 9-Ball.

It's also about having the adventure of your lifetime, unforgettable memories, testing your manhood every day, learning valuable lessons about life and people, and sleeping until Noon and making your own schedule every day. PRICELESS!

Being on the road ...

Is riding and riding until you can't stand to ride no more ...

Spending time with a buddy or two and sticking together through the good times and the bad ... I was lucky they never stuck me or stranded me.

Backing and counting on a friend to beat a player and realizing that maybe dinner is not going to come tonight as easy as you hoped.

Waking up on Christmas morning with 1.00 and some change between the two of you . No family or kids to share it with ... But by the end of the day your eating good and have enough in your pockets for a nice room and then some.

Making sure you got each others backs on a good night and can get out of the pool room with the money you won that night. Learning how to read people and when to leave when the leaving is good ...

Meeting some of the nicest people in the world and making all kinds of new friends.

Flipping a coin to see who will sleep in front seat and who will sleep in the back seat of the car that night .

Knowing all the good places to eat and learning quick the ones to avoid and always keeping some canned goods and something to eat in the trunk when times are not so good ...

Each bar , each Pool hall and each game is unique ... You kind of learn thier really is something to the myth that people act craziest when thier is a full moon out ... I remember it seemed like some of the best and craziest nights seemed to come on a full moon ... We use to look forward to a night with a full moon ... Guess it sounds crazy but maybe we were a little crazy to back then.

I think one of the worst moments for me as I was pretty young back then and traveled alot with my teacher and his friend was one night we where playing in a bar ... My teacher was in a money game and focused on nothing but the game ... It was a rainy night that night so no one thought anything about it I guess when a man came through the door with a long yellow rain coat on ... But I noticed his face was distorted and it took me a moment to realize through the smoke that it was due to the nylon stocking he wore over his head. I saw him when he pulled the shogun out from under the coat and told everyone to get down on the floor ... I did just what I was told to do but my teacher was focused on the game and he never heard what the guy said ... He was busy shooting and I heard him calling the eight ball in the corner pocket ... Followed by a deep voice that said ..." Hey a$$hole down on the floor " ... My teacher heard him then and told him ... "Yes sir whatever the nice man says "... He got down on the floor ... The gun man walked across the room grabbed the phone cord and pulled it out of the wall ... Then walked across to the cash register and opened it and took all the money... He walked back to the door and told everyone that the first person out the door would get shot right between the eyes... Needless to say no one went out the door for a long time ... This was before cell phones were invented ... lol... Glad he did'
nt go around to everyone and thier money ...

One of the best times was hitting Vegas we had a blast up there all the casino's and big lights ... I don't think I have ever seen a city like that before ... It was really different from any big city I had ever been in before...

Like the posters above traveling on the road for me was an experience I saw some hard times and some great times ... Most of the times will stay with me the rest of my life along with the memories . I was very young back then and I imagine that my teacher and his friend have passed away by now ... I lost contact with them a few years after moving to Georgia but as I grow older they come to my mind more and more and the times we had on the road and the things we did and the things we could'nt do ... Gas was much cheaper back then times seemed simpler and as Jay said it was nice to sleep in till you had to leave your hotel room or the heat in the car got to hot to sleep in or to cold or you could not stand the sunlight... The nice thing about L.A. was the nights you had to spend in the car the sun never came out in L.A. until in the afternoon due to all the pollution ... It was nice knowing you could make your own schedule and had nothing to do all day but play pool or look for money games or whatever you wanted to do ... I loved the anticipation of knowing you were leaving to spend some time on the road ... All the good times and it just made home a much nicer place to come back to when we returned ... You find out real quick the old saying no place like home is very true ... But I would'nt of missed it for the world and I'm very happy I count myself lucky that I was able to come to know this game and have these experiences ... A lucky man indeed....

Staying out until 5:30 - 6:00 am and checking in at daybreak trying to make the daily double when you have been up like 36 hours.
Your partner is real quiet for about 200 miles and dthen breaks the silence to ask, " how did you miss that 9 ball?"
Having a partner who talks about $10000 scores and who is scard to bet $50.00.
Walking into a pool romm with $48.00 in your pocket and some guy walks up with his slacks hitched up around his Adams Apple and asks< " you guys looking fo action?"
Walking into a bar in Tulare Cal. and hearing a bunch by the pool table, putting your quarter on the table, raising the bet when your turn comes, talking s#### and then 3 games into it, you realize it's Billy Incordona. The young one.
Being in OKC playing $30.00 9 ball and up 5 games on a 90.00 bankroll and the guy at the counter yells out to your opponet, "Earl Telephone".

DOES THIS MEAN WE CANT PLAY IN VIKING TOURNY, AS WE ARE KNOWN ROAD PLAYERS????

Some great posts. Here's a few.
Being on the road.......Going to the airport to pick up your champion Florida poolplayer and he doesn't even bring a cue.
Being on the road.....Said player miscues on critical 7 ball against former champion he should BBQ and at next stop has your perfect TAD tips on your Southwest replaced with LePros (both shafts!).
Being on the road....Losing $1200 at the horse track on his "system" before he ever hits the first ball.
Being on the road....Great big table player, find out he is helpless on a bar rag.
Being on the road...Your player wins the night before, next day you raise the bet and go to eat. Come back 45 minutes later and your player was bageled by Sammy Soto. Same weekend Florida Gators lose home game and Jordan's Bulls get beat. BRUTAL!
Being on the road....Your player needs a couple hundred before the tourney as he is warming up cheap with a young Corey Duel.
Being on the road...you go to a remote Kentucky town to play a local who is putting huge money in action only to find out Cornbread Red and Bugs have already been there.

hey jay did you go to jail for playing pool.i went to jail for playing in a tournament last december

Good Stuff Guys!!!! Thanks
Its 630 in the morning and I have a tourney to go to. (Seattle Open 9 Ball)
Wish me luck!! Playing with the boys today. Wish I could respond more, but I gotta go. Hopefully there will be more storys tomorrow. I hope so.

Road is....

Waking up in the same clothes smelling of smoke, and instantly reaching for your cash to see if you won or lost.

Driving 60 miles to a shithole bar only to find out (after two sets) that "SAM" is really Rudolfo fu#$ing Luat and you need the six and last three. Thanks Randy for that one.

Waking up in a sweat at noon in your car. (and instantly counting your money)

Ordering chicken and eggs, eggs scrambled well with hashbrowns on the side at Waffle House eighteen days in a row.

Bob Seger's Turn the Page puts you in such a gear that Earl gets nervous.

Wondering if that guy you're playing is laying down, or can't play a lick, or is gonna kill you if you take his $20.

Finally matching up with the guy you've been laying low for and find out you should've had more sleep, and you can't make one in the Pacific ocean.

Giving up the six and the break for shit money just to make dinner.

Someone waking you up while you've had just a little too much proclaiming, "It's your shot."

Telling the same joke four days in a row in eight different bars.

Finding out that a Toyota Corolla isn't the most accomodating place to sleep.

Outrunning the nuts playing a hacker only to find out that your "big score man" was watching the whole time from the bar.

Leaving your cue in Florence SC on your way to Myrtle Beach.

Oh, the good times.

Final Road Trip 1971

Road trip is getting $50.00, a buddy Billy with thousands to bet (his words) and a car together.

Road trip is popping a beer and taking a handful of white crosses as you leave the city limits just because you can.

Road trip is finding a huge bar with 2 separate rooms with a barbox lined with quarters of drunk college kids playing 8 ball for $5.00 a game.

Road trip is getting free beer and $50.00 an hour robbing drunk college kids on the pool table while your buddy is doing the same in the other room.

Road trip is having a drunk college girl ask you if you'll come back to her dorm because she's impressed you haven't lost a game yet.

Road trip is having Billy tell you to get to the car because he's found the only world beater in the place and lost $2000.00 more than he had (which as it turns out was $100.00).

Road trip is forgetting the deerskin jacket you paid $200.00 for as you sneak out.

Road trip is being smart enough to pull slowly out of the parking lot and turn away from the bar only to watch Billy scream "FU *ss%#les", out the passenger window to the guy who beat him.

Road trip is listening to Billy ask where the f are we going for the next 4 hours until you pull up in front of his house.

Road trip is counting and recounting your money until the speed wears off in hopes you'll find the additional $75.00 needed to replace the lost jacket.....

I'm a small fry, and would never call myself a "road player", but I did fly out to visit a buddy, run around his town some, and play a bar table tourney.

As the Unknown player from FL, I shot left handed and looked too much like Dennis Hatch, and I got ZERO action and got booted from the tournament on RUMOR!!!

I ended up flying all the way out to be a professional sweater in my buddy's $20 action.

I did meet the late Verl and Jess Horn, and saw some nice rooms, action and players. It was a funny feeling to be the guy everyone is afraid of, knowing half of them could give me the seven. LOL

You guys that have lived it have my respect, it's got to be working the high wire without a net.b:thumbup:

I got busted with Jimmy Moore. The whole story will be in my book.

Being on the road

Being on the road (albeit a short one) is:

You and your road partner's case money is posted and you foul the cue ball but no one sees the foul except you and you keep your mouth shut to insure a win and the guilt hounds you the rest of your life. :embarrassed2:
