The Dragon Event

Yup; Wilkinson played pretty sporty. She may need to change where she is breaking from, however.

Oddly, Wilkinson lost 3 times in the round-robin matches, including 1-6 to Naomi Williams.

must have been early jitters or something! or culture shock or Jet lag

I cant imagine that record based on that last match.

Jenn down 5-1 to VV

Whoever has to play GYK in the finals won't have a regional player fireing back at them, and she don't rattle anymore in case it's VV. Johnnyt

If GYK gets there i cant imagine anyone beating her in a race to 17!

Just got home from Steinway. Vivian trounced Jennifer B, who tied for third.

Solid event for the NY area girls, with Erin McManus, Caroline Pao and Julie Ha reaching the Round of 32, Jeanette Lee and Emily Duddy reaching the Round of 16, and Jennifer Barretta reaching the semifinals. Well played to all of them.

Nice event for Canada, too, with Brittany Bryant and Naomi Williams both reaching the quarterfinals.

Denise Wilkinson of New Zealand was also a big part of the story, overcoming an 8-3 deficit in the round of sixteen to beat Jennifer Chen 10-9, and reaching the semifinals.

To be honest, I don't think tomorrow's final will be competitive. I predict GYK 17 Vivian 9 .... but you never know.

Let's not forget Emily's top 16 finish

Wow, an embarrassing oversight. Post corrected.

Is it really a big deal considering the majority of the best players did not even play in the event. Let us be realistic here in terms of the so called NYC girls.

I saw the payouts and I'm going from memory here, but roughly:

1st 14,500
2nd 6,800
3/4 3,200
5/8 2,000
9/16 1,000

Point well taken. This was not a premier field, having just seven of the WPA Top 65 ranked players in the world. GY Kim (#2), Jennifer Barretta (#29), Jeanette Lee (#35) and Brittany Bryant (#42), Ana Mazhirina (#44), Denise Wilkinson (#53), and Vivian Villareal (#65). Nobody ranked outside the World Top 65 reached the semifinals. Most of the top 65 ranked players in the world are from Asia, and of them, only GY Kim was present.

Still, I'm from NY and I know all the ladies who play pool in NY and watched them play. I thought that, as a group, they played well relative to their abilities, and I'm proud of them.

Obviously, the only New Yorker that hit it out of the park was Jennifer Barretta, who beat both Jeanette Lee and Brittany Bryant, two established stars of women's pro pool and both ranked in the WPA Top 50, to reach the semifinals.

Considering the hefty entry fee, those payouts are not good. Likely finishing the top 4 did not cover expenses for most.

How do you figure? Entry about 500. Hotel room for 2 was approx. 130 or 65 per person. Except for the last eight, it was a four day event.

500 + 65 x 4 = 760 American participants should all have been able to keep their travel costs to 400 or less. As I see it, if you were an American participant, then if you cashed, you broke about even, and if you reached the quarterfinals, you made some money. Yes, a handful came from overseas, and their participation economics were tougher.

If you came in the top 4 and live in America, you made money unless you stayed at the Plaza.

It is NYC, money was spent on stuff besides just a hotel. This is a Dragon Promotions event so the payouts being blah are not that surprising.

Am I missing something here ?

Payout total = 40500.
20k added + 64 x (entry - green fee) = 40500
easy math gives us 200 for green fee out of 520 buy-in.

Very smart of DP never mentioned the green free or published the payout up front.
