after playing pool for 35 years and making cues since 92 for me pau ferro is the best cue wood there is. the two woods i use alot is coco and b.e. maple. but to me pau ferro is the cuemakers dream wood. plays great, turns great, and finishes great, and is strong. i have hit with about 900 of my cues when test hitting a few racks before shipping for me this is outstanding cue wood for pool cues .its a little harder than b.e and a tad softer hit than coco. i like this wood alot for a sweet hitting cue and it doesnt matter which joint pin. any body else feel the same way about pau ferro/. jeff olney

Its only in my dreams that I have hit with your cues, so I guess it is a dream wood for me too. :)

Lets have some pics.

What woods look the best for points with the pao ferro?. And does the type of wood for the points affect the hit?.

I've never hit a pau ferro cue. However, when I was discussing the construction of my South West cue with Jerry Franklin, he told me pau ferro and cocobolo were his favorite woods.

Tommy, i like b.e. with one black veneer or ebony with a white and black veneer. if somebody wanted a cue lighter than 19.0 oz the b.e. points would be better for weight and balance. many woods and colored veneers can be used.i also like that pau ferro looks good either in black or brown joints and butt caps.i will try to get pictures at a later date. jeff olney

I think there is a good deal of variation within "Pau Ferro" AKA Morado or Bolivian Rosewood. I recently saw a cue being made of this wood and noticed the large pores the wood had in the points and buttsleeve. Looked nice when it had finish on it.

Jeff, I am glad to see you finally posting here.... Now, Back To Work!!! :D

southwest used alot of Pao Ferro,..... hmmmm...
i like the looks of it and have only hit with one made of it so i can't be an expert... how does it compare to Galcano Alves???? I think they may be from the same wood family??? I have hit with alot of Galcano and love it...
just curious...

Aslo- welcome to AZ Jeff!! You'll find alot of cue happy folks on here!! hope to see some off your cues up here in the forsale section :-)

I like Mexican Bocote. It has a great feel. I know some cuemakers don't like it because from what I have heard is it is rather oily and hard to work with.

I found a few samples on google...

It seems to vary quite a bit in grain & color.

I believe Laurie says that Jerry Franklin's favorite playing wood was pau ferro.
