The gambling "lingo"

There needs to be a pool dictionary.

Seems like we're making one now, Finally!

I'm still wondering what ON THE ROOF means as I've heard it a bunch of times before. It always sounded like a woofing add-on to me and not a real gambling related term.

I've also heard ON THE MOON used similarly. It sounds to me like they're saying for that spot I'll play you anywhere any how.

Can't wait to hear someone give a real meaning for it. Someone recently said in the action forum, I'd play you on the kitchen table, maybe the same meaning.

'I'll play you on the roof' probably means 'I'll bet as much as you want'.

and a pick in 1-hole means you can pick up a ball after the break and spot it. allows for more aggressive break shots.

didn't see your post when I posted mine but that really could be it for on the roof.

Lmao..."on the kitchen table"

I'm using that one from now on.

Some of these terms are used widely and some are obscure references...

Kind of like the movie Shooting Gallery where every other line was a "supposed" pool gambling slang. The movie was very hard to follow since most pool players don't speak that way...

I had a guy ask me to play some "money stick"...?? I was like, wtf.. "you want to gamble?" Haha.. It was John Hager... I think it was his hustle at the time.

Then there are things that only pool gamblers would understand...like
"John's gettin the orange crush. 9 ahead for a dime."

Then there are things you might have to double-take.

"You got the call 6, wild 7, last 4, and the crackles for whatever you want."

Then there are things only the pool posers understand.

"I only play for 50 a ball."

Then there are things that nobody understands.
"I'll play you for a satchel of cash."

He drew his rock for the cheesola!

You got the breaks and hand-span!

I thought I ginned that effing 3-railer!

I'll play you 9/7, 8/7.

F**k it, I'm swingin'!

He can bear down for the cheese!

Pack a suitcase.

You gonna gimme some weight?

(These are just some I've heard over the years).

After hustling Paul Newman twice, Forest Whitaker turns to Newman
Let me ask you something, and be honest. Do I need to lose some weight?

Dark meat = All solid colored balls that are dark (2,4,6,7,8), when used in an attempt to psych out your opponent or gain some type of advantage.

For example (14.1): the 13 ball (a nice, bright ball) is in the rack and you put the 8 on the head spot.

Or (1 pocket): you rack all the dark meat along the edge where your opponent breaks.

...etc.

How about if an APA 3 player, overheard two guys matching up a one pocket game..."OK, you got 8 to 6 and the cracks, and one pick,..for a deuce a rattle,...or put up five large...and we'll freeze it up, first one to 6 ahead"...What would he think...:D :D :D

Im a apa level 3 player in nine ball and eight. I know what all this means before reading this lol

To this day until I had seen The Shooting Gallery, I had NEVER heard the term "cecil" and haven't heard it since. I also have never heard anybody use "lemon" or "satchel" or well...pretty much most of the "lingo" they tried to put out in that movie.
