I recently had the honor of visiting legendary cuemaker and craftsman Ernie Gutierrez of Ginacue at his shop in North Hollywood, California. Ernie was very gracious in taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with me.

The video interview covers many topics including Ernie's history, his shop, the craft of cuemaking, design theft, his passion for motorcycles and the future of Ginacue. Of all the things I have been able to do with TAR this is one of the most special to me.

Thanks go to Keone (AZ= Yobugua), Teddy and J.J. for helping set this interview up and making it happen. From all of us at TAR and cue fans everywhere I say thank you gentlemen. A very special thanks to Ernie for sharing his knowledge and good humor with all of us. He is truly a one of a kind.

I really want to say thanks to Keone Young for helping to put this together. He took time on a Monday to pick me up at my hotel and get me to Ernie's shop on time in the maze that is LA. Thank you very much sir.

It was also a pleasure to meet a fellow videographer and pool fan J.J. This man has a truly amazing library of pool videos many of which he shot himself. I hope for all of the pool fans out there that one day we get to see some of this historic footage of the games greats.

Of all the great things I have been able to do with TAR this is one of the best yet. It was an honor to be able to visit with one of the legends of the cuemaking craft.

Thanks and maybe you and JJ can work something out where you can see his videos on your site or maybe package a bunch of them for sale.

If these are the "Railbird Videos" I'm thinking of, they're not the best quality but contain footage of some the all time greatest players matching up.

Congratulations Justin. You guys are getting way to good at this stuff.
"60 Minutes" could not have done a better job of interviewing a true legend in the billiard community. Very impressive, thoroughly enjoyed
every minute of it. Thanks for putting it out there for us. We owe you :)

Just a bump in case anyone missed the best documentary I have ever seen on AZ. Should be required viewing for all aspiring cue makers.
Including Eddie Wheat. ;)

Just a little advice for doing it a little better. It would be nice if you actually mic yourself and the the person you are interviewing. I could barely hear your questions and sometime it was hard to here the answers. Just a thought

Other than that excellent piece.

Of course you are right and hope that problem will be taken care of the next time. Just let me say that Justin did this as a one man operation. Camera. Sound, Interviewer, etc. It would have been great had Justin had a little crew to help him along. I mean it was tough just holding the camera and talking and looking at the things Ernie was pointing out and keeping the subject engaged himself. Justin did a great job and if I had any knowledge about camera's or mike's I wouldve been the one holding it for him. Alas I have trouble sometimes putting my cue back in the case. As soon as TAR can figure out a way to afford a film crew it would be great. Sure things seem easy to solve post facto but during, not. You learn by doing.
And you have to figure that a craftsman like Ernie has limited time. And would not put up with any amateur bullcrap. The fact that he gave Justin over 3 hours shows the validity and expertise in TARs work. Again in the little way I was able to participate I am exuberant in the fact that this was a classic interview and am very proud of TAR's work.

Is this video still available? Very interested in Watching.

Thanks,
Duc.

Try this link instead. It is also filed in the video section of the TAR site.

Great idea. Would be nice to see TAR do this on a regular basis between matches especially with some of the old timers/ legends who won't be around forever. Maybe throw them in as DVD-Rs to people who buy three day match packages if you cannot figure out a way to monetize them.
