"The Hand Flip"

I'm 63 and I've been watching LOTS of pool videos & live streams lately. Watched more games in the last year than I've watched & paid attention to in all my life.

Something I've noticed more & more is the 'hand flip'. Is the 'hand flip' more common among pros than bangers? (I rate as a good banger).

I understand when it's used & why. Is there a certain technique, or a certain hand to use? Bridge hand maybe? I might need to use it more often, I surely have plenty opportunities.

Which pro is more proficient and which uses it the most? I get a chuckle just about every time I see it, more so than tapping the table to indicate where the ball should have landed.

I've had funny looks but no problems when my opponent does it & I can't stifle a chuckle. Thank God we're all friends! LOL

I watch a lot of pool and have no clue what you're talking about. Example?
A quick flip or twist of the wrist after missing a shot or sometimes potting the ball but not getting desired shape. Usually done about waist high! lol

I think he is talking about a "brush-off".
A flip of the hand to show you could care less.
or
He could be talking about trying to impart Body English after the shot.

I thought he was talking about the raising of the hand when a shot is fluked. A way of non-verbally admitting he got lucky.

I get it

I've seen it. The non verbal expression of "whatever". Kind of a valley girl/loser thing.

I must've done the hand flip a gazillion times.
...I express with my hands like I'm Italian...a guy told me once if I had my hands tied...
....I wouldn't be able to talk....:)

But I don't think I've ever pointed to where I wanted the cue ball to be when I screw up...
...that one always makes me smile....seems to me they're expressing that they're actually
too smart to have the lousy position that they got...but there were extenuating circumstances...
..like, uh, the cue ball's light, the cloth is substandard, I need a new tip,,,my old lady has
been on my case lately..............

We all do it. It can be use on different occasions. Sorta like WTF? Keeps us from saying the F word
out loud.

This wiggling of the hand side to side to stop the cue ball from rolling is an old witch doctor voodoo trick that was taught to Ralph Greenleaf by a witch doctor when he traveled to Africa. Ralph passed this on to a few players and it has continued to exist ever since. Ralph said it saved him from hundreds of scratches.

Now we're getting somewhere...

Most of the time, it would be the bridge hand since the grip hand is holding the cue.

One of the commentator's job is to predict the hand flip. If a commentator can't predict it's coming, what kind of commentator could he possibly be?

Freddie <~~~ In praise of the hand flip

There is also the tapping of the chalk on the rail when the cueball looks like it's about to get to a bad place to call upon the pool gods to slow it down, my son likes to say "How" or "What" whenever he misses like he has never seen a miss before, the held-back smack of the cue on the table where you just sort of shake it, touching your female team-mates boobs for good luck. All well known methods to keep your game proper.

I know a player that every time he misses a shot it happened because of the table, the balls, chalk, maybe the people at the bar, anything but him, every time and he misses often!!! I like the guys best that point to where they wanted the cue ball to stop after the shot rather than before they shoot, its like no shit, you didnt want to hook yourself on that shot? You did it so perfectly I thought that was your goal.

Oh oh

My mother caught me doing the hand flip when I was about 14,
but thank God never mentioned it until, I had a boy of my own.

I really hope you're joking when you say this.

You know they're called "tits", right?
