The importance of keeping a table free of dust and hairs

Actually not important at all!

Well it used to be important.. we saw pro's picking away dust and hairs from the table. To prevent kicks, but also not to affect rolls.

Well nowadays we don't mind having a big lump of plastic on the table: the magic rack!

In league play (and I saw video's on youtube with Shane van Boening) the magic racks often keeps lying on the table. Even when the 9 ball is being shot from it.

I have seen balls rolling into one of the 'pit' of the rack, and slow balls diverging.

How come we were picking up dust and hairs before and don't mind this lump of plastic?

Did you know you can remove the magic rack? Even if there are balls on it, more often than not you can remove it or mark the balls and replace them...Best if there is an official around. If you're soft breaking a magic rack and you have a clump of balls on the rack, that's your own fault. Seldom do I see a lot of balls "hanging out" on the MR after a firm break.

I use one at home because it minimizes time racking and increases my actual play time....

Regardless, I leave it on the table until it gets in the way... some racks I never have to move it.

And the picking of dust can also be psychological.. it's part of the routine, gives some extra time.

Yet still I find it weird that we used to be very precise about little things on the table, and we dont mind this huge thing.

But I have to admit: I dont train with MR, so I dislike it to for the games that I have lost to a player who breaks and pots allmost 100% due to the MR.

But I also think that is why people dont mind it lying on the table. They make the small offer (as it doesnt affect the game alot) in order to always have a good rack.

The magic rack isn't perfect but it does a good job of getting a tight rack every time. Let me ask you, would you rather get a loose rack and not have the balls roll over a thin piece of plastic of get a tight rack every time and have the balls roll over the plastic?

Well, to be honest I like racks being a little random.

Some time ago I played a guy who obviously had been training alot with a MR. He softbreaked and everytime a ball was potted and all balls where in the open. I was fotunate that he didnt run every table (still lost the match though) but a stronger player would have!

The magic rack racks the rack as the rack should be (), yet still I like racks that are less predictable more.

Magic rack = "big lump of plastic"....really? I guess it's true, you just can't please everybody. By all means go back to your loose racks and enjoy the rolls.

It is compaired to the hairs and dust players remove..

But as vapoolplayer pointed out: there are other reasons to take of dust and hairs. And the MR can be removed 95% of the breaks.

All true.. yet still I find it weird that we suddenly all seem agreed to this.

There must have been games in which the MR was not removed and was decisive by influencing a ball. What do you do when it happens?

When a ball has some pace I dont think the MR influences the ball significantly. And usually its easy to tell when the MR can be of influence -thats the turn it has to be taken away.

What happens when it is not removed and it influences the shot negatively is ye olde tuff shits. It is possible to remove it and if you choose not to then you bear full responsibility for the consequences.

I have clear hole strengtheners stuck all around my table for different drills and have never noticed a bad roll while I'm playing the ghost once drill time is done. I wouldn't want them on the rack end of the table if I often played straight pool or one pocket however.
I like the looks of that Outsville rack posted above. I may have to get one.
