The Jeremy Jones School of Color Commentary!

I wish virtually all of these fellas who sit in the booth and do color commentary, would take Jeremy’s course, if Jeremy had such a course. While commentating, Jeremy basically says what the options are, and may give some contingencies, along with stating what the player may be feeling or thinking at the time.

Jeremy tends to stay away from bluntly saying what the player is going to do. Then, when the player picks what Jeremy might’ve said was a great option, Jeremy doesn’t gloat like he is Carnac The Magnificent!

I think Jeremy has so much self-esteem, that he understands he doesn’t need to prove himself to anybody. Therefore, he doesn't need to always prove that he guessed correctly, about what the player was going to do.

Since Jeremy doesn’t have such a course, this simple rule of thumb would be helpful;

Stop saying what the player is going to do!!!! Why? Because you don’t know…which is constantly being confirmed when they actually take the shot. This means your commentary won’t be a distraction to the person watching.

Jeremy is the Crème de la Crème of color analysts!

I had the pleasure of listening to his commentary when the USA mosconi team played team Russia, after the Kremlin Cup. He's the best commentator I ever heard.

I remember one night after the Saturday 9-ball tournament JJ showed up and gambled with the local champion. We all stuck around to see our hero show this road player what’s up. Well, JJ showed us what was up. Lol.

I agree with OP I’ve always loved his commentary and consider it to be the gold standard for pool. There are others I enjoy as much but I’d have to say he’s technically the best.

Agree

I also agree on this, there have been streams I turned off because the commentators just talk to each other and laugh at their own jokes.
Jeremy is the best.

+1, Double J is one of the best for sure! I get more excited about him doing the commentary then the match up itself. Love to learn whats going on in the head of a great player, its helped my game tremendously.

Id pay an extra $5 per match for an 'ambient sounds' only option. I would love to watch the current match but i just cant do it. I Tried.

I agree wholeheartedly.
As a big shining bright plus sign to anyone who was mulling trying out Pat's accustats video on demand service....

https://vimeo.com/ondemand/asvod/

...Pat added the entire catalogue of the 2017 Make it Happen invitational 8 ball and 14.1...31 matches in total with most matches featuring Jeremy Jones commentary. There is a TON of learning and education hidden within each match - watching the best players in the world, with the most on-fire commentator for $12.99

A match a night, with JJ, for a month is an education. Thanks to Pat, we have that in full HD and great sound. I was going to make a thread on this but saw this thread and thought it was perfect to let the JJ commentary fans know.

put a microphone in front of me, I freeze. Therefore, not going to knock anybody brave enough to take that chore on.

Yeah, JJ is a great commentator. Most pro players in the booth are priceless. Oscar Dominguez is also great if they ever let him talk. Some of these other commentators are questionable.

What's up with Danny Diliberto? For this guy being such a great player, he never has a clue what he's talking about. For example, the player will have an easy 3 ball out and Danny starts talking about how he should carom the 9 in early for whatever strange reason. Many other times I've heard Danny say something so stupid that the other commentator doesn't even respond. Here's a quote from last night that had me scratching my head: "I finally understand the purpose of the E in Dennis Grabe's last name. Without the E it would just be Grab." Gee, thanks Danny lol. With all that being said, I don't mind listening to the guy. He has a good attitude and charming voice. He's just dumb as a rock sometimes...

Who is the other guy that's been commentating the morning matches? He has a deep voice and is is constantly sniffling, coughing, and licking his lips into the microphone which makes my ears bleed. He needs to be replaced.

One thing I think they run into with that especially nowadays, unfortunately, the streamers run into issues if they are rebroadcasting the song tracks being played in the background. Presumably there is music being played as ambient noise in the arena. A lot of those Facebook streams I think get clipped for that.

I’m a huge fan, subscriber and proponent of Pat’s incredible Accu-Stats productions (especially the $12.99/month subscription streaming service) - - - and after watching many matches with both JJ and Danny commentating, I’ll say they have a perfectly paced, flowing and easy-to-listen-to dynamic.

One of the nicest things about it is, that a viewer can turn down the volume and watch in complete silence and guess what the players are thinking and what shots they “should” take and so on - like we all do when watch our friends play

Special thanks to all of the commentators that take time and have the chutzpah to work those microphones.

off to you, Pat!

Agreed. Jeremy is fantastic. So, by the way, is Billy Incardona, for most of the same reasons.

Billy thinks just a hair too much of his own analysis. Nothing wrong with it, but in One Pocket, he is sometimes a little out of sync with the ultra high level talent, and then pushes his selection as a better option than what the player shot.

Jeremy is much more receptive to seeing stuff he wasn't really thinking about, and more willing to say, "that works too"...

It's a common thing with people of high intelligence that their mind jumps from thought to thought to thought very quickly. At the end of the thought chain, things can come out sounding a little weird. I personally like Danny's commentary just fine, because his thought process is kinda like mine in that way. Quirky, disconnected, but tangentially relevant.

Danny, from what I have heard of his history, was a blue collar guy with a mind like a steel trap. Sounds likes he straight outta New York, but with an interest in etymology/word origins. Yeah, I can totally get why a lot of pool players would not like his commentary. He has interests and thoughts that just don't gibe all that well with the "common man". And for better or worse, most competitive pool players come from more humble circumstances.

Has anybody mentioned Ken Shuman?

I think one name still hasn't been mentioned when we're discussing great pool commentary and that's Ken Shuman (sorry if I misspelled his last name). He's very polite in the booth, knows what he's talking about (even though he might not be a top notch player), very knowledgeable about the game as well as the players and the overall happenings in the pool world. Has a nice commentating voice to boot. I enjoy listening to him comment.
...oh, except when it's with that fella Bobby "Cotton" LeBlanc. That guy is just an awful commentator, awful.

That's not the problem at all, he calls every shot wrong, EVERY SHOT!

LOL at acting like Danny is smarter than everybody.

You missed everything by a mile in your assessment<----just like Danny
