The Manila Mauler/The Most Naive gambler to walk the planet

Kind of a funny story with a touch of irony,

A few years ago there was a fairly good size tournament going on at the old California Billiards in Mt. View which featured several prominent pro players in attendance.

My friend John and I were seated at the lunch counter when this young guy, walked up to Mike Massey who was standing just a couple of feet from us and proceeded to tell him how he and his stakehorse were planning to go over to the Philippines and ‘clean up’ or words to that effect. He even said “my friend has seen me play and he said I shouldn’t have any trouble over there”,

Incredulous at hearing this and undoubtedly thinking to himself this guy had better change druggists, the ever accommodating Massey tried in vein to give this young guy some professional advice by saying things like “you won’t be a able to,,,,,,
”I mean I know all those guys,,,,,,”you just can’t go over there and,,,” well you get the picture. Realizing there was no convincing thei young guy, Massey stopped trying and just let him go on. There was no dissuading this young guy he was too hellbent on this idea of going over there and showing all those Filipinos what fer!

I think it was Abe Lincoln who said " You can't win an argument with an ignorant person"!

John and I jokingly nicknamed this guy ‘The Manila Mauler’

A lot of top pros have had their asses handed to them by unknown pool killers in the PI. I had the good fortune to team up with SVB on his first trip there. We had no problem getting action and all of it was tough. We did escape with the money, but it was no walk in the park. More than once Shane shook his head and said “Who is this guy?” Re: Jeff De Luna and Carlo Biado prior to their arrival here.

That reminds of a kid I knew in Ok . We were at a small bar tournament where Walden was beating everybody in sight . The kid was not impressed so I say ...play a cheap set . They do a race to 7 for not much...$50 or so . It took about 15 minutes for the lesson to sink in . Ironic that this kid was Filipino , must have thought pool talent was in his blood .

I was watching an old Efren match and the announcer was talking about Efren inviting him to visit the Philippines. The announcer said "hey, Efren, do you think I can make a little money over there? Even paused for a second and replied "oh, you're not ready. "

For some reason, I'm hearing that in Billy Incardona's voice but I think he could have at least broken even.

Reminds me of a bit that filtered down to me concerning Brian Hashimoto and Alf Taylor (neither of whom I knew) and basically they went there and couldn't book a winner. 30K losers.
Back to noob, Noob goes bust must be in the players 10 commandments. :)

Wasn't Tito was it? sounds like something he'd do.

Sheeeat!

There's plenty of real good American Philippinos.

No need to travel all the way over there to find out where you stand!

Pretty sure that's Mark Wilson's story.
