and the city rejoices!!

Tonights tournament at Masters drew Mika, Bustamante,Shin Park and the Mexican- Ignacio Chavez (aka 'Pedro', Nacho, Jesse Padilla). Im sure the Mexican will be staying for a month at least. He is back with his NY crew from Uptown.

As i was leaving, Mika was down 3-1 to Busta fairly early in the tournament. No upsets so far.

It really is strange to hear of someone's game improving so much at that age (no offense meant, I'm feeling older every morning). I'm just speculating, but he has got to be in his 50s. And not only the age, but the weed...How do you get better when you smoke so much? He's like Cheech Marin, or at least he was. Believe me when I say that he had NO chance playing Hopkins in anything when he lived in Houston. I forget who else he has played that has been documented on these forums. I know he came back to Houston and played JJ getting the 9 at 10 ball and won. And his nickname was Mago when he lived here. Better nickname than the other ones.

When was he in Houston?

And why do you conclude the weed would be a deterrant to his game?

Just my personal experience, I'm not trying to say everyone else is the same...maybe a better way to put it would be his age, coupled with known habits, would make it difficult for his game to jump so much.

From a former pothead, I can tell you then whenever I smoked pot before I played, the results were tragic. I couldn't run a ball with ball in hand. Plus I used to get really paranoid and freak out. One time I left the room and went home because I bugged out so much.

But then again, there was this other guy I knew who also smoked a lot. And he too was older. In fact, one night he got so stoned he decided to climb a tree for fun. Just to see if he could. Well, I guess that wasn't a good idea because he fell out and broke his arm.

Regardless, the point is he was a BIGTIME stoner and every time he smoked, he got BETTER!!! Go figure!

Weed helps some peoples' game. He is definitely playing better. Davy G used to torture him back in the day, but they matched up 8 ahead 1 1/2 years ago at the Derby and Davy G was toast in less than an hour. The Mexican was on a roll and immediately hooked up with Kirkwood (but that is another story). The match with JJ lasted two days, didn't it?

Yeah, I heard about him beating on David and losing to Kirkwood. I'm not sure about the JJ match lasting two days. I know I left before it was over, but I seem to remember hearing that it had finished that night.

If you must know...

... ask anyone who knows him and spends lots of time with him and they all will agree with me.

Chavez is a student of the game. Everytime i ask he says "watch the Philippinos, the mothaf'ers play good" -Chavez direct quote

He's always been good he just moves better now. I mean the guys in NY could tell you.

Chavez will sit there and watch every little thing they do. From the eyes down to the finger tips... He's got it all memorized.

Now i've known him for about 5yrs or so but i tell you what... they guy is always learning and figuring out the game. Its a shame he's not younger, could u imagine?

Just my personal opinion here but i think he's the closest thing i've seen to Efren. They both have that HYBRID 3-cushion style of pool.

Great safety and kick safety ability coupled with natural angle shape.

They both just outmove guys and play the percentages.

I think some players might play better on weed to calm their nerves. My friend said he couldn't play without smoking and then he quit recently as he hangs with me alot and I dont do that at all, maybe 10 years ago when I was a burner but now I just dont feel any urge, maybe some booze. My friend is playing better pool then ever now 2 months after not blazing weed anymore,go figure.

I agree he's always been good, but he's obviously much better in his mid-fifties than he was in his mid to late forties.

When he lived in Houston, he played safe way too much. To the point where he would safe himself out of winning a game. I can't know for sure but he must have gotten a little more judicious about when to play safe and when to try to run out.

I believe they will all be at skyline this weekend for a tournament.

Is this true? Cuz if it is then I'm definitely interested in seeing them play live!
