the new cue itch ....why do we get it ??

Good topic. I've spent the last 4 years buying and selling cues. I wanted to really step up my game. Part of that was trying to figure out what I want in a cue and what cue will work with my style/ body structure. I've learned a ton in that 4 years and finally settled on an early 70's Joss after trying about 50 cues. There is only one cue that I really want to try and that could maybe bump my Joss off it's top position...Tascarella. But until that time I will not be buying any more cues. Time to focus on winning.

pcmacter...

Well Matt my friend I tried a nice used cue you sold me because the price was close to right, not real close but almost close. LOL. I think we just buy or trade cues looking for the hit that is so special we would be happy, at least for a month. But I don't know since I have 30 or more cues and 65 fishing outfits and have not fished in 5 years, so maybe I'm just a hoarder.--Leonard

to me it sounds like you are just a novice fisherman; just saying...

I had three perfectly lovely players in my case...but for me, it's now all about keeping with the basic configuration I like in a cue, and trying out new things, in different woods that I like, from different makers. While I am no longer chasing that 'last great player'...I am still very careful with whom I chose to craft a cue, and playability is a main consideration before anything else.

To that end, I now have four perfectly lovely players in my case, and in another year or so, will likely add a fifth...once I find the right maker, with the right woods, with a reputation for making cues that 'play'.

If cues were always purchased in search of the best hit, players would do better switching tips.

50yrs playing, owner of a poolroom, sold a lot of cues, I'm one of those guys who just never had the urge to buy custom cues. But to answer your question ....

Cause they aren't cues. They are plugs. Plugs that plug up the hole that lets in negative thoughts while we play.

It occupies enough of the brain when its new to block the void that lets in the negative thoughts. When the plug starts to get old it starts to leak, so ya gotta get a new one.

smokey....you were absolutely right, I should have never sold that Josey...do not know what I was thinking! :thud:

However, I did rectify that mistake...and guarantee it won't happen again! :joyful:

i have awalys been a player first, cue guy second. meaning that I have awalys had played with the cue that brought out the best of my game that I could afford. I never liked to play with a fancy cue(i'm still that way) but I have awalys enjoyed owning fancy cues and once in a while on a sunday or some accasion take out the fancy cue and play with it(never played as good as my player) but it is a nice feeling kinda like dressing up nicely...

So as I got older and could afford better cues I would buy one a year, I awalys had 1 or 2 fancy cues, my player and 3 to 5 other cues. thats my ideal idea for a collection.

things changed,

I took a few years away from pool, did better than I ever thought possible and was able to afford some pretty big cues. I like have non-titled assetts that have good liquidity, cues fit that description as do watches, art, etc. So I had a pre determined amount of $$$ to go buy cues with. I bought 2 big ivory cues, i realized they just arnt me I traded one off and still have the other(gina cue that was posted up 3 weeks ago) those big cue just arnt me. I was careful on my spending, I lost on some cues, have done good on others-but this makes cues sound like a commodity or stocks-and to me they arent at all. I just like knowing their value I have sold/traded 5-6 cues in the past 2 years.

I assembeled a collection of cues made by my favorite cue makers, If you own too many cue's it becomes a numbers game and the cues lose their intrinsick value just being in a pile. Thats bill shit, I know 75% of my cues, I wish that number was higher. I enjoy each and everyone of them. I have to lay in bed on a laptop to work 80% of the time. So I awalys have a cue or 2 laying on my bed next to me so I can look at it while i'm on the phone. I love looking at cues.

Right now I'm going to shrink my collection by 10 cues and add 2 or 3 bigger cues.

What triggers me into buying another cue??? sure the feeling of aqusation is nice but its deeped that than that, I want to buy cues I know about, whather its the builedr, player, era it was used in, how good it plays. Etc. The magic isnt gone because I assembeled the collection I did, its at its limit. I dont want any more cues and I want to sell the cues that I dont know or because I liked them when I bought them but learned I didnt keep likeing them.

You learn alot about yourself cue collecting, I did anyways. I noticed most all my cues are player cues, I didnt realize that until Poohkiller came over and I took them all out for the first time ever and set them on the 6'X12" and saw mostly player cues, the fancy stuff was mostly bought when I bought collections. I have the Scorpion Cue JA gave me wheb he was inducted into the HOF, now thats a big cue he used it 2 years, and switched right after the HOF.

and look at some more eye candy and good players. I'll be in Marietta, GA on July 10 at the South Eastern Cue and Case Show, so stop by if you can, and pick one up and hit a few.
You know you want some!!!!!!!!! You are getting sleepy, very sleepy and you want a Triple Cross Cue this time.
Hope to see you there.

I have several vehicles that I drive and I switch off and drive them all for no particular reason unless I need one of the trucks for hauling or yukon xl for hauling more people. I just like different cues and swap them out a lot. I have a favorite player, but recently am reluctant to take it around much because it is a big cue. Last month ordered one plain from the maker that will be my most of the time player, well it's not real plain. I guess the proper answer is-I buy cues because I can.

Best thing about getting a differant cue is that any reason you use will allways be understood. new cue means new conversation.
