**The Oficial "What you hate about Amsterdam Billiards NYC'' thread**

I'm not sure if one has to do with the other. I don't know who Mr. Jordan is or if he even knows GG.

It doesn't matter if he knows GG... I'm just saying that the thread is an attack on something that means a lot to me. Maybe it was a bad comparison? But it seemed right at the time.

If that's your pic in the avatar, I don't think there is much to hate about GG11, hubba hubba!

You know, I kept my posts confined to what you had to say. I responded to your opinions and left it at that. You want to turn this into a flaming war with name calling and you're the one who brings the forum to the gutter. I'm sorry if you think I'm arrogant but this is my home room and thus far, the critics' posted information has needed correction. I didn't start slinging mud just because someone didn't agree with me.

EDIT: The very thread title is an attack on Amsterdam. I see it as nothing else. It is a business comprised of personal friends of mine and many others in this forum and by your name calling, you're now attacking me.

That's right Juude. You're totally innocent here!!

You never told another poster on this site that he "sucked" without having EVER seen him play. You never left me negative rep laced with harsh words because of a difference of opinion on other threads!!! No! Not you Jude!!!

Someone here asked for an opinion. Need I remind you (AGAIN) that this is one of the key reasons for forums like this. To share opinions. Now, defending your friends is one thing. But to avoid reality (see my last post pointing out the reasons why some of us dislike 'your' room) is just plain silly. These are facts. Its pricey. Its crowded. The wait is too long. If you think this isn't true, then I have to ask... which Amsterdam are you playing at???

#1 Tony Robles has been their housepro for many years now and he's starting a new tour called ''The Predator Tour'' to promote the game we all love. But they won't even give him dates to do the tour in his own room!! Meanwhile, other neighboring poolhalls have agreed to give him multiple dates. They're saying that it would be a conflict with the tri-state tour but how can that be when they only have ONE open event with them per year.

For a place thats supposedly an "upper scale" poolhall, I thought the treatment of their regular customers was just really tasteless and shameful.

Us regulars at ABC always have little grips about this change or that change that Greg implements at ABC. When you're comfortable in a setting, you hate change with a passion. Price increases, moves, rule implementations, etc. I for one dreaded the day ABC announced they were leaving the West Side. But it happens.

#1 - Tony's tour and ABC. Do I think it's wrong? Absolutely. Tony has been a loyal member of the club and not supporting his en devours in the sport shows a huge amount of disloyalty, in my opinion. But that's the way it goes sometimes. The tour has moved on and hopefully with it's success in the future, ABC will see it as a honor to host it down the road and not an option they decline. Mr. Jordan, thank you for your support on the subject, regardless. It's kind of your to rally to Tony's defense.

The rest - ABC is a home away from home for many of us on this forum. It's almost like a relationship to some of us and if you attack it, be prepared to answer the wrath of all it's significant others. Are the prices high? Yes, but it's Manhattan, they gotta be and the Power Play more than evens it out. Are the drinks pricey? Yes, but again, Manhattan. Roll with it! Bag a drink, chug-a-lug outside before you come in and save a penny/Benjamin, whatever.

The point is, ABC is like Cheers to a lot of us and we're sensitive about it. We've accepted it's flaws and still love it to death. Are you guys entitled to hate it? Absolutely. It's simply hard for us to handle and not be defensive.

There are a small handful of regulars there. I know Bob Watson is their housepro and he draws in some APA folk but on the whole, it's more and more a social club. They've taken out all but one row of tables on the street-level floor and no longer have ANY snooker tables. I literally wanna cry every time I'm reminded that it used to be Chelsea Billiards.
i concur. between Corner Billiards and the EastSide Amsterdam, Chelsea was my other frequented poolroom in the city.

Forgive me but I don't know what you're talking about. I have several thousand posts as do you. I can't remember every conversation I've had, especially when it comes to remembering all these names people use. Can we stick to the present topic?

Now, regarding the criticism, I'm the one that posted the hourly rates, listed the details of league benefits and even noted the competing rooms. After that, it's up to the player to decide whether or not this is expensive. Regarding the wait-list, yes it can get excessive but see, that's part of my point. How can you say the wait-list is too long and the prices are too high? I can't see how you can improve it both ways. If you cut down the rates, the wait-list is going to double.

I agree with those that believe the table rates are rediculously high.

Most pool rooms i have been in charge somewhere between $3 to $4.50 per hour per person. Or they charge $7-8 per hour per table. Some of these places have new diamonds. IMO you can't beat new Diamonds.

If it is an exclusive club (private) like a Country Club, then maybe paying a yearly due would be a better situation for it's members. If it's not then the prices are WAY to high

Depends on where you live ... Below is the rate at the pool hall I play (Mountain View, CA).

1 Player - $7.00
2 Players - $13.00
3 Players - $16.00
4 or More Players - $17.00

I guess you are right.

My house would be $5000 a month in Southern Cal instead of $1000 a month here. So that makes since I guess :)

My question would be, what do poor people do if they want to play pool?

there's no way your house could be 5 grand in s cal and only one there. you have shown your silly self again.

and there are no poor people there.

(im a horrible impersonator..)

your turn to take a leak on me.

Therein lies the rub. I dont claim to have a solution to this problem Jude. I never did.

All I said was that these are some of the reasons I dislike the place! And that's why I choose not to go there! This really isn't quantum physics here. That was my opinion. The age-old theory of 'If you don't like it, avoid it' can certainly be implemented here. I DON'T like it. So, I avoid it! Plain and simple.

Okay, great. Problem solved.

Supply and demand, that's all there is to it.

What's the point in complaining about table rates? If it makes you feel better, sure, complaining can be a good release of stress. But it's not going to change reality, and you're just dumping that stress on the ABC loyalists and employees. Manhattan is a big city. It's expensive. Not everyone can afford to live in NYC.

Here's a hypothetical question:

If the rates are too high, why don't you buy your own table? It will pay for itself within a year or two given the expensive table rates at ABC. The answer for many people might be, they can't fit one in their 1500 dollar a month studio. In other words, rent is too expensive. Well, that's exactly why table time is expensive there too.

I've only been to NYC once in my life. I took the train out to ABC because that was one of the landmarks I wanted to see while I was there. I think I waited about 30-40 minutes for a table and was required to play with another patron who was by himself (no single tables allowed, I was told). Here's a strange thought for you... I would have liked the table time to be MORE expensive. That way, I wouldn't have had to wait so long to play. :)

Seriously, you don't have to live in the city to play pool. You can play pool anywhere in the world, in the boonies even. Anyone who is sick of the city and its outrageous prices, I encourage you to move. Please help do your part in reducing the demand for The City and maybe I can afford to live there one day. Thanks. ;)

I agree, that's why I have a GCIV in my livingroom. I told the girlfriend I was thinking about getting a second table set up next to it. She thinks thats a good idea. I am thinking one of those Diamond Pro-am's from Planet 9 balll would look good next to it. I will have to take out a wall, but it's not load bearing. If anyone knows when they are selling their equipment let me know.

Holy crap, that rules! My dream is to have a 9', a 10', a Diamond bar box, a 12' snooker table, and a 10' heated billiard table all under the same roof. As long as I'm dreaming, might as well make it the roof of a building in Manhattan. Does anyone have a cute billionaire sister they can introduce me to? I'd make a good house-husband. :D
