The problem with the forum

I don't post here much and I don't look at this site much mostly because of all the flame wars you have to go through to get to or see something interesting. Back in the day, which wasn't that long ago for me but I lurked for a long time, you could come on here and get an action report, see tournament results, every once in a while pick up a new shot or drill, and you could hear a good story or two. Lately all you see on here is a bunch of sissies(not sure on the spelling), no pun intended to females just a way of saying that everyone is crying or talking crap about something. Give it a break because in most of the cases, except for a few of the players and you know who you are, everyone on here is a bunch of league players or wannabe pool hustlers. Your not fooling anybody talking about how you went down to the local bar tournament and crushed everyone( i.e it was a nail biter down to the last ball) and beat the roadman out of a hundred (i.e he gave you the 7, 8 and the break and you broke even). If Most of you were face to face with the guy you are talking crap about A) nothing would happen and you would pretend to like him B) someone would find and excuse to leave the poolroom or go to the other side and talk crap about what you would do to the guy if you were face to face with him C)play for $2 and break even and then go talk crap about how he got all the rolls. If I had a problem with someone on the forum, which taking into consideration the problems I just mentioned somebody will take offense to this even though there is nothing intended by it just to make a point, I would just meet up with them wherever they are and play some (until somebody is busted down to their BVD's) and get it over with. Even though somebody is going to take offense to this it's not meant to be offensive. Everybody just stop the crap and talk pool, play pool, buy some overly priced expensive cues (send me the old ragged ones, cause that's what I like to play with), and drive a 4x4 over your over-inflated internet ego.

Well first of all, this is one of those posts that you claim to despise....

Secondly (and lastly might I add), I'm sure you can get all the action you want and then some. Where are you located? I'd be happy to match up $100/game one pocket with you.

WTG Roscoe! The post did kinda reek of the pot callin' the kettle black, didn't it.

50/5 Golf will also seperate the men from the boys, just in case he doesn't like 1-Hole.

Everybody is a tough guy over the internet. That was a dumb post.

Lcksmith, respectfully, I greatly disapprove of the means by which you've made your case, but don't feel that your point should, resultingly, be dismissed. Like you, I enjoyed the Main Forum far more when it was chiefly pool related, and agree that it has slipped into some tough times. Even the threads bearing a name suggesting pool content can prove disappointing on inspection, having either been hijacked or inclusive of personal attacks.

Where we disagree is that this turn of events evidences a general decline in the respect among posters. In fact, most of the posters on this forum are respectful and courteous, don't hijack threads and don't make personal attacks against other posters. Your attempt at generalization was, in my opinion, unfair, though it's undeniable is that the number of thread hijacks and personal attacks has risen considerably and to the forum's detriment.

I'm of the opinion that just a few light the fires around here and just a few add fuel to them. Who they are is debatable and not really the point, but they've grown in number.

In conclusion, I'll join you in hoping for better times on the Main Forum but won't join you in harsh generalizations about those who post here.

SJM, you remind me of a wise owl that everyone turns to for advice. Every one of your posts are filled with honesty, intelligence and truth.

Well put SJM. I included too many people when I over generalized my original post. All I can say is that the post in no way was meant to be disrespectful to anyone even though it may have sounded that way.

That's a classy response, Lcksmith. Thanks for taking my comments in stride.

Thats the problem about people posting they always write whats on thier mind and 5 post later say oh I am so sorry if I offeneded anyone I didnt intend to!! What the hell so what if you offended them its your opionion say what you want. I mean you shouldnt offend them by calling them a racist name or some other riduculous nonsense. But stating your opionion about something like your drag on post did, shouldnt offend anyone if it did then they are a panzy ass pussie!!! hahahaha

tap, tap, tap to sjm...so often the voice of reason.

A few points I think more posters here could keep in mind....as all people should. Some ideas spoken by many wise philosphers...advice that keeps people out of arguments.

Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Remove the log from your own eye before trying to remove a splinter from another's. ie: None of us are perfect.

Have some empathy for the flaws of your fellow man.

We all fall off that road every now and again...we can all be hypocrits at times...and usually it comes back to bite us.

Uggs! Uggs!

 Damn you Jeff! I had something I was going to say, and then I found myself staring at your avatar and forgot!

it is the evolution of things,,,,that when membership grows, you will get a wider divergence of opinions and personalities stating them. but i tend to agree the icon, that there isn't enough moderation.

i do not envy mike because i also happen to think a pool forum is representative of the demographic it reflects. why is it that sports forums get all riled up? people yelling, getting in fights, and swilling beer at ballparks. pool rooms are full of whiners and crybabies and people who think they play better than they really do.......... i don't see any difference here. yet there are other forums where there is harmony, a real desire to help others, and if a quarrel erupts, it is quickly resolved with common sense. here,,,,people end up calling each other out,,,,,,like, gee,,,,i've never seen THAT happen in a poolroom before.

so this is what happens when membership grows and more posters get involved here. big deal, it's bound to happen.

i don't think moderators means censuring. a lot of this stuff can be diverted to more appropriate forums....problem solved. the infamous sweet marissa thread was relegated to "non pool related" forum,,,,a captivating little read that didn't stain the rest of the forums.

but clearly, mike needs some help. one person shouldn't have to deal with the crap.

I'll take a little of that golf action you speak of.

Running a forum is one big giant headache, I know first hand.

No one is ever happy, one person will think you have let things go too far and another will think you stepped in too soon. It's a lose lose situation most of the time when action needs to be taken.

How far do you let posters go? This is a question that is not easily answered. One thing I know for sure, there HAS to be rules or things get ugly in a hurry.

One thing I've found out over the years from running several forums is you have to decide where the line is and you have to stick with it. If the line keeps moving, it's worse than not having a line at all.

You have to let everyone know what the rules are and how you will deal with members who break them. It doesn't matter if you have one or two or even three warnings before banning, the important thing is everyone needs to know what the rules are and the owner of the forum needs to implement them with no exceptions.

This is a great forum and it would be a shame to see it fall into another bash site or worse go away all together. The owner of this site could very easily just say, "I've had enough and shut it down". I for one don't want to see that happen.

TAP TAP TAP! Excellent post! I think this is a great site too. I've never been to a site that has as much info about pool on it. Sometimes the flame wars are interesting to read but sooner or later they get too ugly. I think Mike is doing the right thing by posting why he bans or suspends someone because that will help to validate just what is expected and what is not acceptable.
